Jasper Niles pinged, Hanna Westfall and asked it she was ready. “They will be coming through any minute. Watch where they take the hummers and maybe we can take them out with out shooting anyone.” Each of them had around 25 t0 30 folks fully armed and ready. Rather than dig one long trench they had split up in pairs and spaced themselves out while they dug fox holes. The brush and trees were a perfect cover for them and they had managed to create a semi half circle in front of the big gates, stretching from one side of the 180 to the other side. It was like a half moon of deadly firepower. If they had to contend with the heavy machine guns on the hummers it would not be good for sure but they had prepared to take them out first when the shooting started. The gates screeched open and the air became so tense one could feel the heaviness bearing down. Everyone had their eyes and weapons pointed at the gates as the minutes passed and nothing came through. The first Humvee drove cautiously through and moved slowly toward the junction of the 652. The second one was spaced out about 30 feet behind the first one and the people could see the man in the turret on top swinging his machine gun to and fro. The third hummer was on the heels of the second one and then the gate was empty. The three hummers drove to a point just past the junction and stopped. They had turned themselves into a t shape parking arrangement so the first one was pointed south while the other two parked perpendicular. The motors could be heard idling when the first Tank could be heard rolling toward the gate. It came through with a man on the turret holding the heaving machine gun and the cannon barrel staying level with the ground. The damn thing rolled through and continued to about 50 feet inside before it stopped. The next thing through was the first howitzer and it stopped just inside the gates. Everyone could see the troops come in and gather close to the howitzer.

The tank began to move but only rolled about 20 more feet before it stopped. The Howitzer moved off to the side and intended to park along side the tank while the Second Tank started to roll through the gate. Shawn had his hand on the controls for the halogen lights they had planted on the wall and beside the road and he also had his hand on the detonator switch for half the mines that had been planted. Jasper Niles had the other detonator switch for the other half. The second tank rolled to a stop far enough inside to let another Humvee come through. There was a man standing in the turret but he did not have his hands on the heavy machine gun. He looked to be maybe someone in charge of this fiasco. Shawn pinged, his snipers to target the man. They could hear the big motor of the second howitzer and the noise of another motor just before the thundering, blast threw a giant fireball into the air on the far side of the wall. The troops that were still coming through fell to the ground and then all hell broke loose. Jasper pressed his detonator and half the road erupted into giant fireballs taking out the first tank and a good many troops that had gathered close to the howitzer and that ill fated tank. Shawn pressed his detonator and the other half of the road plus the entire road at the gate entrance erupted in synchronized explosions as the second tank blew its complete turret skyward. The ordinance in all the heavy armor began to simultaneously go off. The Humvee that was in the gate gunned its engine and rushed into the land of Texas. Shawn watched as the man in the turret fell backward then forward and then the Humvee exploded. The road way was essentially blocked with heaps of burning metal and secondary explosions. Something had hit the big howitzer on the far side of the wall and blew it to pieces. The Troops were running around screaming as they caught fire and took shrapnel from the exploding vehicles.

Lieutenant Jordan Cisco had brought his chopper in from the southwest as planned and once he and Barbara crossed the Guadalupe Mountains he dropped down toward the 180 on the New Mexico side. They came in low just as the second tank was driving through the gate. He took the bird up and made a big arc to come in on the back side of the big howitzer that looked as if it was getting ready to move. Barbara had marked the other artillery on the Texas side of the wall and he knew that they would have to take out the howitzer now and then try to do some damage to the other vehicles already in Texas. Daniel radioed them and said they were tracking a bird from the base that was coming in fast from the north. It was cloaked and could cause some real damage to the force coming up from the south. They were going to take it out before it got to them. Daniel then told Barbara to take out what they could at the gate and he and Michael would be there as soon as they took out this bird. Jordan came in low and fired three missiles from his left bank of five SRM’s first. As the rockets streamed toward the howitzer he fired two more from his right bank of SRM’s and they streamed toward the big armor piece of artillery behind the first three. The first three slammed into the main cannon breach box while the second two slammed into the magazine below the main cannon. The breach box exploded and the cannon barrel rocked into the air. When the magazine was hit the entire cannon barrel lifted into the air and rolled through the air to hit the ground. The driver cab in the front exploded in a series of flashes and the entire vehicle lifted off the ground then slammed back as all the tires exploded. Jordan raised the bird and all of sudden the other side of the wall lit up with streaming lines of fire and fireworks of sprayed out explosions. The cacophony of noise was overwhelming. Jordan took the bird up high and flew over the wall toward the south and arced around to watch the fireworks. It was like he and Barbara had started a chain reaction and the Emperors minions were on the loosing side.

Sergeant Bernie Greene was in the first Humvee that had come through and was looking at the road south of him when the first bullet hit him in the chest. He had heard the explosion come from the far side of the wall and started to turn when the bullet caught him. He fell backward and out of the turret as the front of the hummer exploded and the ordinance started to go off. The other two hummers began to unload their machine guns onto the landscape on either side. The men that were shooting went down one after the other and then those two hummers exploded in a menagerie of fireballs and black smoke. A few of the men had jumped clear in the nick of time and rolled away from the deadly explosions and fireballs. When they stood up to run they were greeted by a group of people that held weapons on them. The area close to the junction of the 652 and the gate of the 180 were lit up like roman candles and the fire burned hot. The troops that survived were being rounded up by the militia and walked to the wall.

Captain Jean Pierre flew his cloaked bird almost due south. He had been given orders to fly to the 180 gate and help the force that would be pushing into Texas from that point. His course was to take the route southwest and enter Texas then come back up from the south and hit whatever resistance might be fighting against the second armor force. He was looking forward to strafing the Texans. His co-pilot Lieutenant Zackary Cosivich was watching for any activity within a 100 mile radius and told him that there was a large force of vehicles moving from the south. Jean Pierre wanted to see what this was. The other two birds that were suppose to join the 1st armor force at the 285 were somewhere off to the east of his position. He wasn’t sure of the group from the south but he changed his course to fly over them to get a better look. He had come across the border halfway between the 180 and the 285 and the group had just come into Cosivich’s scope. He made his course change and Cosivich said “something is funny Captain; it almost appears there could be something else in the air.” “What are you saying Cosivich? Is there another chopper in our air space or could it be just birds?” I am not sure Captain; it keeps phasing in and out. Whatever it might be, could be a glitch in our equipment or could be another cloaked chopper.” “Well keep watching it and give SITREP’s on the ground force as we get closer.” “Yes sir” and with that Cosivich went silent while he dialed his gauges and tried to zero in on the glitch. He looked up and straight out the front windshield just as the flash of missiles almost blinded him. Captain Pierre saw the missiles streaking toward him and tried to evade but it all happened to fast and both men saw their last moments of this world as their corporeal bodies were burned away from their souls.

Michael and Daniel had caught the stray chopper coming in from the North. They were heading north at the moment to cross into New Mexico and come in from the east to the 180 gate. The old cloaking or Dispance gear the Emperors army still employed did not work with the new device that Bill had come up with. They could see the enemy bird on the scope before they actually visually saw it heading for the group from the fort. They watched as the chopper changed its course slightly to fly directly toward the group. Daniel quickly told Barbara what their plan was and said they would meet them at the gate. Michael maneuvered the bird to be directly in front of the oncoming chopper and waited until it was in range. Daniel told him the distance and said “I think they might be seeing something that is strange to them but it most likely is illusive at this point. Michael watched the retical on his scope move onto the bird flying directly at them. He pressed the fire button on his joy stick as the retical locked on and the 5 SRM’s streaked away. The explosion undid the cloak and a giant fireball shot streamers in all directions as the enemy chopper fell earthward. Michael and Daniel both watched as the burning hunk of metal hit the ground and exploded a second time. Michael punched the chopper ahead and flew toward their original destination.

On the New Mexico side of the wall one lonely hummer sped away on the 180 toward the north. One side of it had been burned with an explosive blast from the howitzer when it blew its barrel into the air. Sergeant Manuel Cornish and two privates were in the vehicle as it raced away. Manuel had floored the vehicle and was climbing toward 65 mph when the chopper decloaked on the roadway in front of him. It was about 500 yards away when it fired its SRM’s and the rockets streaked into the front of the hummer. The vehicle shot into the air and exploded as it continued its decent back to the earth. It crumpled into a heap of fire and smoke when it connected to the highway and lay in a pile of burning metal.

Michael and Daniel rose from the roadway and flew south toward the armor force that was headed toward the 180. They caught them halfway up the 652 and stopped them. Michael climbed from the bird after landing on the road way and told Lieutenant Bob Koland to turn the force around and get back to the fort. He told him that the 180 gate was secure and there would be no Emperor’s soldiers or armor coming from there this day or any other. “The fort is their main objective and they may have tried an end run to get control in its vulnerable stage. We will go and help over at the 18 that could be under attack soon, Major Leroux is up at the 285 gate so that will be covered.” Bob got the force turned around and took off toward the fort. He understood that it was vulnerable now so he was going to double time it back. He called Major Leroux who was in one of the choppers and told him what had transpired. Oscar smiled at that and acknowledged for him to get back to the fort as fast as he could. “I think we can handle the 285 for now.”

B. THE FUTURE HOLOGRAPIC GAME

Sergeant Lament and his 5 men walked over the small rise and stopped. The little town was below them. It was located at the end of the big lake and was actually built a good 50 feet above the lake surface. Lights were on down by the pier and they could see the boats sitting next to it in their berths. Lament told his men to spread out and come into the town in a wide arc. “If you see anyone kill them quietly, I don’t want to disturb this town until we meet with Sergeant Holtz.” He looked at his chronometer and noted that it was only 2230 hours. Damn he thought, this place was closer than I thought. They had to walk down a slope into the town so it was slow going. “We will meet at the pier and wait for Sergeant Holtz and whoever the other team is that they met up with at the North end. From there we will take Holtz’s orders now move out.” 10 minutes later they showed up at the Warf and stood around on the main pier. The town was dead; no one had seen any other life signs. It was eerie to them that the people were gone. The lake was placid, almost like glass. Hertz spoke in a low whisper, “Okay Sergeant what do we do now. I didn’t see any people” and as he said that he looked around at the others and they all said the same thing. Hertz looked back at Lament and said “it appears this town has been abandoned or something. Can we go and see if there is any food somewhere, I am starved?” Lament was getting the hairs on his neck standing up at this point. He looked at his chronometer and noted the time to be 2250 and turned to look out on the water. He truly expected Sergeant Holtz to be here by now. This was really odd. “No Hertz, we wait for the Sergeant Damnit, Your stomach is going to get you killed one of these days.” The men looked around and found places to sit down. They were all leery and kept their weapons at the ready.

10 minutes later, Sergeant Lament began to walk up the road that climbed into the town. His senses were on major alert as he walked upward. The other men followed with caution and soon they found a small café. Lament told Hertz “Looks like your going to get your wish corporal.” He turned and looked at the lake once more and thought there was something real strange about it. They all entered the café and Lament told all of them to be on the alert and keep watch on the Pier which could be seen out of the big windows. They had just sat down when a tall dark haired woman came from the kitchen. Lament was the first to stand up. The woman was wearing army fatigues and that did not seem right in his eyes. Whatever was going on in this town was completely spooky to him and his men. The woman stood behind the bar counter and spoke. “You gentlemen appear to be lost can I help you?” God Lament thought, what is going on here? Another woman with red hair came from the kitchen and moved to stand next to the tall dark haired woman. “Has anyone ordered anything yet? The burners are hot.” All of the men were looking around and finally Hertz spoke. “I don’t know about you guys but I am hungry.” He looked at the red haired woman and did not think about the fact that both of these women were dressed in Army fatigues. His mind was on eating a good hot meal and the mission be damned at the moment. “Say, can you cook me a medium rare steak with a baked potato and a corn on the cob?” The other men snickered now that Hertz’s gut was speaking. What he asked for was appetizing for sure and they all were hungry.

Lament was not going to let these women deflect him from the mission, “who are you and where, are the people of this town?” The Red haired woman turned and walked back into the kitchen which made him even more suspicious. He turned to the tall dark haired woman and asked his question again but this time he was more forceful and acted as if he was going to grab her and possibly shake her. The woman just looked at him for a moment and said “will you excuse me; I must take care of something.” She turned and walked through the double doors and disappeared. Lament became frustrated and walked over to the doors that went into the kitchen. He pushed them open and the kitchen was empty. There wasn’t even a kitchen there. It was just an empty room with nothing in it. His senses went to overload and he turned back into the diner area. His men were still sitting at the tables and the diner seemed to be the same. He walked over to the front door and looked out. The town seemed to be the same except now he noticed that there weren’t any vehicles on the street. Hell he couldn’t even remember if there were any vehicles when they first came through the town and then when they come up from the pier. The lights were still on down at the pier and he noticed that the boats were gone now also. Private Guy Banks was the first to stand and walk over to Lament. “What’s the matter Sergeant, you look like you have seen a ghost or something.” Banks looked out the door and felt something odd. He turned back to the men and asked if anyone had seen any vehicle move on the street.

Lament was walking back toward the kitchen when Hertz hollered out “WHERE IS MY DAMN STEAK?” He got up and walked over to the kitchen doors and tried to open them. They would not budge now so he tried kicking one and his foot went through the door like it was paper. He pulled his foot clear and reached over and ripped the paper away. On the other side of it was nothing but another wall or so it seemed. He moved the few steps to it and touched it. The wall was solid and he couldn’t do any thing to it. He turned and looked at the men who were all standing now and looking dazed at what just happened. Lament shook his head and said “Let’s get out of here this is crazy.” He turned and pushed the front door open and spilled onto the street. The other men came out and they all stood on the street looking at the lake. Something did not seem right about it so they began to walk down to the pier. The night was dark but the lights at the pier were fairly bright. Corporal Lieberman was the first one to move to the edge of the lake. He bent down to touch the water and his hand hit the hard surface of something bluish green. He looked up at Private Mooge who had come up to him with a quizzical look and stood up. He turned to the others and then stepped out onto the hard surface that was not water but rather something that was like glass. He walked out to the end of the pier and back. His next comment was one of defeat and perhaps unknown questions. “Looks like Sergeant Holtz is not going to make it” was all he could say as he began to walk back up the road. Lament called to him. “Where the hell do you think your going Lieberman?” Lieberman turned and said “I don’t know Sergeant but this ain’t real, I would like to find a way out of here so maybe the way we came in is the way out.”

Lieberman walked into the town and began to open doors on the storefronts, some opened into a big empty room where others did not open at all. He kept moving along the street and began to climb the road that lead out of town. The other men had done the same thing with the stores or other buildings and found there were no real stores or anything. They all wound up walking up the road toward the way out. Lieberman had disappeared over the rise first and when they came up over the rise Lieberman was sitting and leaning against what looked like the landscape. He was holding his head in his hands and crying. The others came up and Kilgor was the first to try and walk around Lieberman and ran into a wall that looked just like the landscape. He began to feel along the solid surface and went as far as he could. The others watched him feel along the landscape that looked so real and saw him curve around. Lament was watching his men go slowly crazy with this and said “Listen you lug nuts we seemed to be trapped in some sort of fake town or something. I suggest we all start feeling our way along this wall and maybe we can find a door to get out of here.”

Newman Frazer and his sister Antonia giggled as they watch the toy soldier’s move around the outer surface of the big toy town their father had created for them to play with. Father had told them that the people were holographic and could be programmed to act just like real people. The holographic was the latest in this technology and the soldiers were so real it was as if they could do almost anything. The computer programs were created from the real past history. The holographies were so good it was hard to tell between reality and the holographic human toys. The year was 2368 and these kinds of toys were just starting to be big on the market. Newman and his sister were the children of one of the biggest toy makers on the planet and history was a big teacher in this kind of technology. The globe that encased the town and its fake lake had once been a real place long ago. Presently the town was encased in the night time scenario. Newman and Antonia were due to go to Europa for a year of planetary learning so Newman turned off the power source of the toy and covered it with a large blanket. By the time they came back from their schooling this toy would be outdated.

71 THE BATTLE for FORT MENTONE PART III

Sergeant Jesse Bradford had been surprised and glad that the other half of his team had come back. The way they just materialized was what surprised him and the others that witnessed it. The men and their vehicles that materialized were more dumbfounded than anyone. Jesse approached Patrick and asked him what they had found and Patrick told him about the militia and Rangers over by the lake and said “those folks said they have that entire area covered.” The mysterious way that the men and machines got back was skirted around for now as Jesse told Patrick to get his men situated for the coming invasion. “Patrick, you still got that case of claymores?” Patrick looked at Jesse and their minds connected. “Yes and I will send the boys up to plant them at the wall.” Jesse nodded and said “you best be hurrying, that force of armor has been getting steadily louder. We don’t how many or what kind of vehicles they have but it is for sure they got tanks and at least one or two of those howitzers. You know the distinct sound of those damn things?” Patrick nodded back and started to move to his men. They would have to take the dune buggies up and dig those mines into the ground. As he turned he saw the lights coming up from the south on the old 18 or North Pine Street as it had always been called. There seemed to be a long line of the lights and within a few minutes they had come to a stop and some of them drove over to the ring of trees where Jesse and his team were parked.

Jesse waited as the 8wheel LAV-25 pulled up and stopped. Someone turned off the lights and a man jumped down from the turret and walked over to Jesse. “Sergeant Bradford?” Jesse said “yes sir?” and the man held out his hand to shake. Jesse took his hand and noticed it was huge. “I am Melvin Purvis, I and my boys have come to help out with this damn invasion that stupid used car salesman has cooked up. My LAV is equipped with the SRM Launcher and we also have the 30mm chain gun on board. Hiram Johansson has the other LAV equipped with the SRM box and chain gun. Where would you like us to set up?” Jesse gave it a moments thought and said. “How fast can you move away from the wall if one of those tanks gets in here and decides to take aim at you?” Melvin had to smile. “Well sir we would have to run straight at the beast because the closer we get the less accurate they are with those big 130mm cannons and they can’t maneuver as quick as we can anyway. So you saying we should park close to the wall on either side of the 18 and when they blow the wall and come through we can fire on them from the side then?” “Yes Mr. Purvis that is the idea.” “Well the wall is only about 10 maybe 12 feet high in most places along this stretch and if we get close enough we can peek over the wall and see the progress.” Jesse had to smile; “okay you coordinate with Mr. Johansson then and get to it. I got my men up at the wall right now planting some claymores on the road bed as best they can so there will be some explosions once those minions blow the wall and try to come through.” Melvin got the radio freq from him and climbed aboard his vehicle and rolled away. The other vehicles that had stopped on the old road began to disburse out into the oil fields where they could hide behind the old pumps and maintenance shacks. Jesse did not know how many folk had actually come up from Kermit and the surrounding county areas but he sure was glad they had come. He did not know exactly when the artillery and armor from the fort would arrive so this was a good start to hold the enemy off until the main force arrived.

Sergeant Major Ramon Esquabar had been given two full squads of men to infiltrate the border. That normally would have been 12 men but he got lucky and each squad had 8 soldiers. That gave him a full compliment of 16 men plus himself as the commanding soldier in charge. He had taken a troop carrier and driven to the border wall at least 30 miles east of the 180 gate. His goal was to get inside of Texas and head south until he reached the old 652 where he would continue toward the east until the 2nd armor force picked them up. They would be dropped into the big wash on the west side of the Mentone fort where they would meet up with the other 7 squads that had or would penetrate the border. He had his men burry the troop carrier in a clump of brush and trees and they all carried mid sized back packs with all sorts of different ordinance and necessities. They scaled the 18 foot high wall some 34 miles east of the 180 gate and immediately began heading southeast from that point. Ramon made sure that the Constantine wire looked normal and not damaged so no one would get suspicious and he made sure the men brushed out their footprints until they were almost a mile from the border wall. This would hopefully make it very hard for any Texas soldiers that would be patrolling along the wall, to discover anyone coming over the wall. Ramon told the men to spread out so they could semi hide the foot prints in the red dirt of this area called the Bad Lands. The canyons and washes were full of Juniper trees and other types of fauna. They could traverse here well and hide if they spotted any airborne activity. It was around 2200 hours on the second day in that they heard the distant explosions off to their west. Ramon knew that the invasion had begun by the armor groups. They were moving along the 652 road now and staying just north of it. There should be at least two other squads somewhere within range of the road by now and one or two on the lake North of Mentone. He knew that two had come in from the east side of that lake and all their movements were heading to the same place. He and his men did not know what may be happening at the 180 gate but it was sure that the same thing would start up at the 285 gate soon. As for the old 18 to the east they would not hear anything from that distant place but it should have already happened by now and perhaps Major Grissom and his force were already in Texas and moving toward that city called Kermit.

It had been around 20 minutes after they heard the explosions to their west that the men were completely surprised by the explosion to their North and in the air. They all turned and watched as a chopper exploded and fell to the earth in a giant fireball. The distance was around 3 or 4 miles due north of their position and when the thing went down it disappeared behind the hills and trees. Ramon gathered his men and told them to be on the alert. Something had just happened in the air and there could be a cloaked chopper flying around above them. They all started to stay in the trees and move quickly to the next group of trees or tree as they hurried along the north side of the road. It wasn’t long when they began to hear the sounds of vehicles. They were in the distance to their east and sounded like they were moving toward them. Ramon began to gather the men and move further north from the road. He told them they needed to find cover and lay low for now because that could be a Texas convoy of armor and troops. They managed to make it about a mile from the road and find some thick trees on the far side of a rise. They climbed the rise and spread themselves out along the ridge where they could see the road and began to watch. It wasn’t long after that they saw the lights and then recognized the Tank and howitzer and the troop carriers and Humvee’s. Ramon desperately wanted to notify the force up at the gate but his orders were to remain in radio silence once in Texas. The armored force got closer and was heading in a fairly steady pace toward that 180 gate when all of sudden a chopper decloaked and dropped down on the road in front of the lead vehicles. The whole group came to a halt and Ramon could see a man come from the chopper and one get out of the lead Humvee. They walked to meet each other and had a conversation for a few minutes and then parted. The next thing that happened made Ramon very suspicious. The entire force turned around and began to move back toward the east. The chopper had disappeared and was gone. He and his men waited until they could not see the lights of the vehicles anymore and started to move once more toward the east. Ramon decided to stay at least a mile from the road but had to send two men over to flash them as they walked along the road. This was getting stranger by the minute but the goal was still in play and the men continued toward their destination.

Master Sergeant Buck Balone had taken his 6 man team just two days prior and split from the other team that was supposed to go and float the reservoir into Texas and meet two other teams south of the Red Bluff Lake. He had driven at least 15 miles west from the 285 before abandoning the Humvee and then his men walked along the wall for another 5 miles before they scaled it and crossed into Texas. Once on the inside they walked until they came across a water course. The wash had a small stream of water still running and Buck entered the water and began to walk in it as it made its course southwest from the wall. The 7 men disappeared into the hills and trees as they moved along the water and then finally climbed out a few miles south and began to traverse over the land toward the southeast toward the big wash that ran south from the Red Bluff Lake. Buck’s orders were to meet with Sergeant Major Esquabar in that big wash along with several other teams that came in from various points. They would be the platoon that would attack the fort first and keep it occupied while the armor forces came in from the south and took over the capture or so he was told.

Lieutenant Ernst Groinrocker was in the first Humvee of three that Major Grissom had sent ahead when the howitzer broke down. He was just as pissed about that as the Major was. The equipment had been neglected far too long in his eyes. The Major had told him to take two other three man teams and drive down to the border and relay any Intel about the status of that wall. He wanted to be free and clear to blow it and roll into Texas without any resistance. Ha thought Ernst, That idiot really knows how to dream, The Texans ain’t going to let anyone come across their border without resisting. God whatever happened to common sense? This entire fiasco should not be happening at this time. He brought the hummer to a stop about a mile from the border and looked through his night binoculars. He could see the wall and it looked rather calm. He looked at his chronometer and noted it was 2150 hours and that made the bile in his stomach rise into his throat. He looked at Sergeant Klicker and said “Damnit we were supposed to be down by Kermit Texas by now. This whole thing is turning into a nightmare for coordination.” He radioed Sergeant Craper and told him to take his hummer down to the gate and see if he could get any sign of activity on the far side. Craper pulled his vehicle out of the formation and drove by on his way to the wall.

Melvin Purvis’s son Jimmy was standing on the rim of the turret of the LAV and looking over the wall at the road. Melvin had parked the LAV about 600 yards from the road bed along the wall to the west. The chain gun was at the ready and so were the SRM’s. Jimmy spoke over his shoulder to his Dad. “There is one of those hummers coming down toward the wall, I think they are going to try and see what’s on this side. What do you want to do Dad?” Melvin bent over and spoke to Opie and asked for the .50 cal sniper rifle. He handed it up to Jimmy and said “set it up son and if those boys get to nosy take them out or at least one. I suspect when one falls the others are going to run so you might have to take out the driver of the hummer also. Damn that is going to give those bastards a notice that there are people on this side. Let me call Sergeant Bradford and see what he’s got to say.”

Jesse handed the phone back to Corporal Roberts and told Patrick and Ronny to get through the wall and take out the people coming down here. “We need this to be a quiet kill and make those other two think that every thing is quiet down here. Make up something Patrick but make whoever is in those other two hummers, believe everything is 5 by 5. Patrick and Ronny hopped on the bikes and took off for the wall, they reached the secret opening just behind were Hiram Johansson had parked his LAV and rested the bikes against the wall. They both had the MP8’s and their K-bar knives. They had come through the wall and were running into the trees when the Hummer pulled up to the wall. Patrick had stopped and looked through his night binoculars at the two hummers still parked about 1 ½ mile’s out. He could see someone was scoping the area so this was going to be a touch and go operation without those people seeing him and Ronny. There was any number of trees and small buildings on this side so he and Ronny began making there way over to the road way. They both got real close as one of the men had climbed out and was moving toward the wall. The man had a fold up ladder and meant to climb up and look over the wall. They would have to wait for him to climb back down now but the two men in the hummer were easy targets.

The silencer on the MP8’s made a slight thud and the two men in the hummer fell over. The man that climbed the ladder slowly peeked over the wall and looked through his binoculars. He couldn’t see anything but trees and oil pumps at first then noticed a pickup sitting behind one of the pumps. He continued to move his binoculars and spotted some other vehicles and then started working himself back down the ladder. The hummer was sitting fairly close to where the bottom of the ladder was and as soon as the man reached the dirt a knife slid across his neck and the man crumpled. Ronny held him for a second then let his body fall to the front of the hummer. Patrick had slid into the open door where the man had exited. He had pulled the two dead men into the back and was sitting in the driver seat when Ronny came around to make it look like the man from ladder was getting back in. he climbed in and moved to the front. The radio was squelching and buzzing so Patrick picked it up and made it see like the frequency was cutting out as he said the coast looked clear but they were going to stay here and continue to check out the other side. The voice that came from the other end told him to adjust the dial so he could get a better read. Patrick had no idea what any of these men might sound like so he continued to goof around with the dial until the other man told him to stay put for now. “The Major should be showing up anytime now so will call and tell you to get out of the way when he gets here. We are going to shoot from here to blow the wall and you three can be the first through if you think you can handle it.” Patrick buzz clicked the hand set and gave a clear okay and cut the feed. They both waited for a few minutes then Ronny got out and climbed the ladder and gave a sign to the boys on the far side before he climbed down and moved to the side as if he was going to go to take a leak. He moved in behind a tree that was growing close to the wall and began his trek back to the opening. Patrick had already made his way out and back into the trees so the hummer sat at the gate with two dead men inside and one lying on the ground in front.

Ernst Groinrocker had watched the private get out of the hummer, down by the gate, unfold the ladder and climb up. He did not see the man get into the hummer because he was looking at the man on the wall. He watched the man climb down and disappear in front of the vehicle for a few minutes then come around and climb back into the hummer. The radio buzzed and sounded like it was loosing contact or something and he could barely here the Sergeant telling him that all was clear and they would stay and continue to keep a watch on the wall. He finally told the Sergeant to stay put and to be ready to move away when the Major arrived to shell the wall from their position. He watched the private climb back out and up the ladder again and then back down and move to the side. At that point he received a call from the Lieutenant that was driving the Major’s Humvee. “Groinrocker this is Oman we are in route and should reach you in 30 minutes” Ernst looked at his chronometer and shook his head; he wanted to scream at the idiots and tell them they had missed their deadline by almost two hours. It was now approaching 2215 hours and 30 more minutes would put them at 2245 and by now the 2nd armor force had breached the 180 gate and it was rapidly approaching time for Colonel March to blast his way through the 285.

Lieutenant Michelle Thompson had gathered the other two team members at the border and all four of them made their way back the post where Captain Wyatt Harper and the rest of the squad were guarding the big gates at the 285. She brought the small team back into the small forest of Junipers around 2140 and Captain Harper was glad to see her and the others. He had been very worried about her and told her so. He told them all that they would have to hold the force from the north the best they could and sent half of his team to the gate to plant the claymores they had. He was trying to contact Major Leroux when the vehicles came up the road from the south. There were around ten or more trucks and jeeps that pulled to a stop within a few hundred feet of the gates. They had seen the men digging in the old road bed and did not want to disturb anything that the men were doing. Jack Harrelson and his wife Mattie climbed out of their Jeep and walked up to the first man that was busy digging a hole to bury a claymore. Jack waited for the man to finish digging then watched as he gently placed the claymore. The man who appeared to be a Sergeant stood up after covering the mine and stepped around it. He looked at Jack and said “how can I help you? You know this place is going to be attacked sometime this night and we are trying to slow down the invaders.” Jack smiled and said “well Sergeant, we are here to help, can you tell me where we might find Captain Harper?” Sergeant Arthur Burns smiled then and told Jack to follow him. Arthur climbed on one of the bikes and waited for Jack and his wife to get back in their vehicle and then drove toward the forest of trees. Jack had told the others to wait while he went over to meet with the Captain.

Wyatt watched the headlights of the vehicle come over from the 285 and pull into the trees. Sergeant Burns pulled his bike up and told Wyatt that the militia or at least some had arrived and waited for the man and his wife to get out and come over. The man was tall and beefy and his wife was almost as tall as him. They both had side arm’s holstered around their waist and he suspected they had the standard AR25’s just as all Texan’s had been issued at one time or another. The man walked over and stuck out his hand. Wyatt took it and got a good healthy shake. “Captain Harper, I presume, my name is Jack Harrelson and this is my wife Mattie. We have come up from Red Bluff to assist you in holding those invaders until your commanding officer can get up here from the fort. We were contacted earlier and managed to round up about 30 of us. Major Leroux said he would be coming with an armor group but it was going to take a while.” Wyatt was glad and was thinking were to station these folks so they wouldn’t get blasted when one of those damn tanks or even the Humvee’s with the mini guns came through. “You folks got any heavy machine guns and RPG7’s?” Jack smiled and said “Heck yeah, we come prepared to fight. We even got one of those LAV-25’s with the SRM launch box that holds 15 missiles and we got extra loads plus the chain gun so where would you like us to set up Captain?”

“Well first off get that LAV up as close to the wall and within range of the gates. When that force arrives it is more than likely going to blow those doors open and then roll one of those tanks through first and maybe those damn hummers with their mini guns. So that will be the first targets to hit and maybe we can clog the gates up. They can always blow more of the wall away but it will take some time. Whatever you do don’t get in the sights of one of those tanks.” He looked at his chronometer and noted it was now 2230. “Get your people parked behind the trees and oil pumps and spread out so they can’t blow a bunch of you up all at once. Set you heavy machine guns up to take out the hummers when they come through. Your RPG7’s will also take those things out. I am not sure just how much damage you could do to the tank or the howitzers but anything is worth a try.” Jack turned and started for his Jeep, “Come on Mattie we ain’t got much time.” Mattie reached out and shook Wyatt’s hand and did the same to Michelle as she had been standing next to Wyatt. She turned and almost ran for the Jeep and as soon as she was in before the door was closed Jack was moving and the Jeep spun around and raced back out to the road. Wyatt and Michelle watched the headlights begin to move off the road and spread out into the trees and the sparse oil pumps. Wyatt finally turned and told everyone to get into positions, a ping had come from the wall that the big motors could be heard coming down the road.

Colonel Howard March had become inflamed with anger. Major Grissom had called and told him that he was now running a good 2 hours behind and would not reach the 18 wall until almost 2245. The spearhead into Texas and the takeover of Kermit was a forgone conclusion of being dead in the coordination and movement of the plan to take over the fort. He had not heard from Lieutenant Bannister since the moment he had called and said they were beginning their assault on the 180 gate. The orders were to go silent once inside of Texas so he was thinking that Bannister had made it into the nation and was on his way toward the fort. He was supposed to meet Bannister where the 652 met the 285 and from there they would make their way to the town of Mentone and overcome it. The plan was now uncertain until he got through the gate in front of him and rushed southward. He had no idea what was in front of him as the drones had been destroyed and the squads had all gone radio silent. It was now 2250 and his force was stopped a good mile from the gates. He had ten minutes before he would begin shelling the wall to blow the gates. By god at least he intended to keep on schedule. There had been 0 communication with the General at this point and he was not about to interfere with the man and his plans. He did not know the full scope of the man’s plans but only knew that the General had mentioned something about taking the fort while the activities were underway at the border roads.

Mica sat with his men while Susanna taught them how to open some locked doors in their minds. Nancy and Rosa had already opened some of those locked doors and could do basic levitation and telepathy. Mary and Theresa had disappeared to deal with a squad of men that were closing in on the town of Red Bluff. The rangers were very open to learning how to open the doors in their minds. They had met with Jeremiahs men and women on their way from the Farwell incident and had been given some basic instructions from those folks. Mica had been surprised at how many new men and women had joined Jeremiah and his 7 man team and when they were told about how the situation of the snake fort had been dealt with it made then all want to learn. When they met Susanna and Theresa who had been part of the team to make the snake fort disappear and there wasn’t any blood shed other than the people disappearing, it was a welcome surprise to them all. Mary was a real treat for them because she was part of the family from the Haven that they all were told about. All three women had husbands that flew the choppers that were down at the fort and they too could do the things these women knew how to do. Susanna had told them that it would take a bit of time for them to learn but it would come to them eventually. Mary and Theresa showed up in between doing the errands as they called them and helped with the learning. It was in between one of these excursions that Mary and Theresa asked Mica and Iver who seemed to be the most adept at learning to come with them. Mary said there was a large team of men that had entered Texas and were making their way toward the fort and she wanted to send them to a place where they would not do any harm to Texans again. Mica and Iver had picked up the ability to disappear and send objects into time and space very quickly. All of the men had learned to talk telepathically fairly quickly. Susanna, her sister Nancy and Rosa were teaching in leaps and bounds so they all could eventually help out on the border. The time seemed to stand still for them all in the cavern and when the horses began to communicate with them it was a great surprise and wonder.

A. A CIVIL WAR MOMENT

Mary took Mica while Theresa took Iver and they disappeared from the cavern. Sergeant Major Ramon Esquabar had walked around 15 miles further east along the 652 when he told his men to spread the word to take a break. The two men walking along the road got a ping to take a break. It was 2255 hours and Ramon knew that the 2nd armor force should have entered Texas by now and be on the 652 heading toward the 285. Colonel March was due to hit the 285 gate in the next 5 minutes. He was in the frame of mind to wait for Lieutenant Bannister to pick them up. He was tired of walking and would gladly wait for the ride. His men were also tired but he knew they shouldn’t rely on Bannister to be coming. He wasn’t sure how much further it was to the 285 intersection but it was far enough that it could take hours and hours before they even came close. If Bannister didn’t come at the right time they all could be bypassed by Colonel March and his 1st armor group as they came down the 285 from the border gate. Ramon gathered his men and walked toward the 652. He intended to get close and wait. He concluded there was no sense in continuing to walk and waste their energy when the 2nd armor force would be coming along anytime soon and they would all meet up with Colonel March. He and his men reached the big clump of trees just to the north of the road and he told everyone to get some food while they waited. “Once we are in place at that fort there will be no time to eat or sleep so this is the place to do it.” The two men that had been walking along the road were fetched and all 17 of them found places to sit or lie down while they waited. Some of them pulled out their mess kits and cooked a small hot meal with the rations they had. No campfires were lit but rather the men used the small burner kits with the bottled propane. Funny how some things never seem to change thought Ramon.

Master Sergeant Buck Balone and his 5 men had traversed the Texas landscape southward for at least 30 miles, all the while moving eastward. They had crossed an old Railroad bed and Buck figured they would come to the 285 highway. The southern town called Red Bluff was a destination for him and his team now. Colonel March was supposed to bust the border gate around 2300 this very night. He looked at his chronometer and noted it to be 2245. He had heard traffic earlier. His men walked over the next hill and walked down a steeper slope this time. 10 minutes later they came to the highway. The lake was not that far from this road and he had to make a decision at this point. His orders had given him a number of different scenarios. The first one was to wait for Colonel March at the road where they would be picked up and taken to the big wash south of the lake and almost due west from the fort and there they were supposed to meet Sergeant Major Ramon Esquabar and the other squads to form their own platoon to attack the fort from the north while March, Grissom and Bannister hit the fort hard with the armor groups and other platoons from the south. His second option, that he had relished, was to move to the lake and head south to the little town call Red Bluff where he would meet Sergeant Jack Holtz and his men and kill the people in the town and take whatever vehicles they could find to drive to the meeting place by the fort. The team he and his men had split from was supposed to float the lake and pick up Holtz and end up at that little town. The relished option was what he chose and he and the 5 men crossed the highway and made there way toward the lake. They reached the bottom of a hill just as they heard the distant booming of guns and explosion. Buck knew that was Colonel March blasting the gates and he told his men to hurry over the hill. As they climbed to the top they disappeared.

Ramon sat with his men in the trees and listened to the distant booming. They thought it might be lightning from a storm that was making its way up from the south but the more they listened the more the could tell it was coming from the north. Ramon looked at his chronometer and understood it was coming from the northern border where Colonel March was entering Texas. He decided that he and his men should begin walking toward the east on this road and maybe they could reach the 285 before March brought his armor force past the crossing. 17 men began to walk toward the road and disappeared.

Mary and Mica appeared in the air above the group of men in the trees. The half moon cast light across the landscape but in the trees it was dark. Mary spoke to Mica in the mind and asked him to move to the rear of the men as she stayed toward the road. As the group stood up and began to move from the trees Mary and Mica both sent them into the past and to another place. Theresa and Iver floated over the 6 men as they crossed the highway and hurriedly walked toward the hills that stood between the old 285 road and the lake to the east. They waited for them to climb to the top and sent them into the past and another place.

Ramon Esquabar led his men up onto the road. The road was dirt and looked like it could only sustain traffic one way. There was foliage on both sides of the road and Ramon stopped at the edge. The booming they had heard in the north was no longer in the distance. He looked down at the rifle he was holding and dropped it on the ground. The gun was very long and had a wooden butt and front stock. There was a large hammer and the trigger guard was made of something that looked like brass. The barrel was around 4 feet long and large. He turned slowly and looked at his men. None of them were dressed in the army uniforms that they were dressed in when they left the tree line. In fact they had nothing on that resembled any kind of uniform. Their clothes were white shirts with pants that had suspenders over their shoulders and most of them had big wide brimmed hats on their heads. They all seemed to be carrying the same type of rifles and some had pistols in holsters that looked like old time single action pistols from two centuries earlier. As he continued to look at his men who were looking around also and at themselves he could see the high top black boots they all seemed to be wearing. He looked down and saw the pistol he was wearing and pulled it from its holster and examined it. It had wooden grips on the handle part and was a wheel gun as it was called. He knew this from some of the history he had studied. He picked up the rifle that he had dropped and at that moment 6 men came out of the tree line on the far side of the road. They all seemed to be dressed in the same way and were carrying the same type of weapons. They stopped and stared at Ramon and his men.

Ramon walked into the middle of the road and stopped. He looked one way and turned to look the other way. All he could see was the dirt and wheel tracks that looked like they were very narrow. “Sergeant Balone, where are the other men you came down with?” Buck was just as stunned as all the others but he answered the Sergeant Major. “They split from us and went to the reservoir sir. They were supposed to float down to the lake and pick up Sergeant Holtz and his men. We were supposed to meet at the southern end of the Red Bluff Lake and take out that town before moving south to the fort. We crossed the 285 awhile back and climbed the hill just before the lake. We heard the booms of tank fire so figured Colonel March was entering the border at the gate.” Ramon looked at the man and asked “so how is it that you find yourself on this road with no lake around?” Buck looked around at his men and back at the Sergeant Major. “I don’t know sir; we walked through the thick forest at the top of the hill and came out here.” Ramon turned to his men and motioned to Sergeant Underwood to follow him while he told the others to wait. “You men wait here and keep on the lookout for Texans they could be anywhere.” He turned to Sergeant Balone and motioned for him to lead the way into the forest. He wanted to see if they would come out at the edge of the hill and see the 285 at which point he would fetch his men and they all would make their way to the road and wait for Colonel March. He would have to explain their attire and the weapons but that was miniscule compared to this strange place they found themselves in.

Buck Balone told his men to join the others and wait while he took the Sergeant Major and Sergeant Underwood back through the trees and see what they hoped to be the 285. Buck followed what he thought was the exact path he and his men had taken when they first entered the forest. A short time later they came to the edge of the forest and stood on a ridge of the hill. Ramon looked out over the horizon of more hills and trees. There was no lake in sight and there certainly was no highway below them. They did hear what sounded like water running down in one of the canyons below. Buck was confused as was the other two and he started to say something when they heard the rifle booms. All three men turned and started running back through the trees. The closer they got the quieter it became and finally they cautiously moved forward and then heard the voices of men and what sounded like horses. Sergeant Major Ramon stopped the other two and whispered for them to be quiet as they silently made their way toward the dirt road they had left. They found the thick brush and crept through until they could see the road and the men. All three of them were confused but Ramon being one that studied military history knew exactly who the men on horseback and standing around were. All the men had uniforms on and they were grayish blue with red piping and yellow patches that showed a rank on the sleeves. There were several men on horses and they looked like officers. His men and the few men of Sergeant Balone were being herded into some wagons that had steel bars around an enclosed box. All three men could see the dead bodies lying on the road and along the side. It looked like maybe 15 dead; it was hard to tell from their vantage point. It looked like there was a small platoon of men in the gray uniforms with about 4 or 5 men on horse back. The wagons had two horses at the front to pull them and they saw a couple of cannons attached to two of the wagons. All three men watched as the platoon and wagons along with the horse riders began to move. Ramon figured they were heading north from here. They waited for the men and horses to disappear around a bend in the road and still waited till they couldn’t hear them anymore.

Ramon was the first to stand up and walk out to the site. He started to walk around the dead men and began noticing they were his men and some he did not recognize that were in the gray uniforms. They had been shot perhaps defending themselves but it was sure they were dead. There were no firearms left on the scene and some of them were missing their boots as well as their jackets. Buck and Damon Underwood both came over and searched the men also. Buck recognized 3 of his men and stood in total defeat. This day had become the strangest day of his life and he did not know where or even when he was. Ramon was walking around looking for anything they could use when he came across a piece of paper. He picked it up and began reading the print on it. He noticed the date at the top, it was written to read September 13, 1862. The text told of the secession of Texas the year before and how the Confederate army was rounding up those that were loyal to the Union Army and hanging them because of the treason that was going on. Ramon handed the paper to Buck who in turn handed it to Damon. The three men identified all their men and drug the ones that were on the road to the side and laid them side by side. They went through the pockets of all the men and found anything that might be useful. Damon found a compass in one of the dead men’s pocket and that would serve to help them get out of Texas. Once they found their bearings all three of them made there way north and east from the State of Texas and into Union territory where they joined the Union Army and fought to their deaths at the bloody battle of Gettysburg. It was on July 2, 1863 at 10 am that Ramon led a small group of soldiers including Damon and Buck into a patch of trees and was surrounded by a small force of confederate soldiers. They fought to their death on that cold wet morning in July and were listed as missing in the history of the American Civil War. The other men that had been captured in Texas were listed as being hung during the historic mass hangings of Gainesville Texas during the month of October 1862

B. THE GATES OF THE 285

Colonel Howard March looked at his Chronometer and ticked off the seconds. He had sent both tanks and at least 5 of the hummers plus a troop carrier full of soldiers to within 700 yards of the gates at the border wall. He had moved his howitzers and the rest of his armor and men to within a few hundred yards behind the tanks. He had tried to contact the two choppers that were supposed to be flying over and into Texas, cloaked of course and come back from the south and strafe any opposition they might encounter. Unfortunately there was no contact which gave him pause to stall the attack at first but Damnit; he wasn’t one to be squeamish just because the choppers appeared to be missing at the moment. The time had reached 1 minute before 2300 and he was counting the seconds. At 2259 and 34 seconds the sky blew apart with one of the choppers dropping uncloaked between him and the tanks. The first tank exploded in a huge fireball and the hummers scattered away from it. The troop carrier sped off to the west from the road and stopped suddenly. March could see the men jumping out the rear and then the damn truck exploded. He was confused at first then the second tank fired its gun at the gates and the doors opened. That confused him even more but his adrenalin kicked in and he gave the all out order to charge. He was not going to wait any longer and chance being hit him self. Lieutenant Peter Mohan jammed the vehicle into gear and sped off toward the open gates. The second Tank was already moving and the other hummers had pulled into the front and rear of it as they all made their run to that open gate. The howitzers were moving now and the one in the front was just starting to pick up speed when the driver cab exploded and the entire thing did a sharp turn and rolled onto its side.

Howard was looking forward and never saw what happened to that first Howitzer nor did he see the second one explode in the middle of the road and keep on exploding as its magazine blew. The third Howitzer came to a complete stop and the men jumped from the vehicle. As they ran off into the east and west the howitzer did not move. The streak of SRM’s that magically came out of the night sky collided with the cannon breech and exploded. Another magical streak shot from the roadway or so it would appear if someone was looking and collided into the rear magazine. The Barrel on the howitzer popped up in the air and came down hard on the forward cab, crushing it and the ball of fire shot streamers in a spidery fashion as the entire rear end of the vehicle blew itself to pieces. Howard watched the hummers disappear through the gate and the tank rolled through behind the two that went in first. The explosions he witnessed caused the gate doors to swing back toward the closed position. Howard watched the side of the tank explode and its left side track come off as it rolled further in and then he saw it begin to swing its turret toward the west when a group of SRM’s smacked into the space between the turret and the chassis. The turret lifted off the chassis and the barrel went forward and dropped into the dirt. The explosion that followed shot shrapnel in all directions. Pieces of metal bounced off the wall and hit the ground and could be heard zinging through the air. The tank blocked the road way on the inside of Texas. The two hummers that were following managed to scoot around the tank before it blew its lid.

Major Oscar Leroux had strapped himself into the wall harness of the chopper so he could see through the windshield. Captain Gary Travis was concentrating on his targeting scope while Lieutenant Kenton Lear dialed in all of his scopes. The one that was most important at the moment was the one that could show the cloaked choppers of the Emperor. Captain Marion Roberts and her co-pilot Lieutenant Stephan Wills flew the second chopper while Lieutenant Laurence Grimes and his co-pilot Lieutenant JG Dani Hardy flew the third one. Grimes and Hardy were directed to fly due north over the lake and circle back around from the east after they entered the New Mexico state. Roberts and Wills were directed to fly to the west and circle back in. Oscar wanted to charge down the throat of the commander that was daring to invade through the gate. They all had the new cloaks that Bill Johnson or Major John Ballard had created and fabricated. They also had the devices that could detect the old cloaking gear the Emperor was still using and they were searching the skies as they moved toward the border. Oscar’s 1st armor force was traveling up the 285 and would reach the border fence by 2330 or was expected to. His choppers were ahead of the force and the two on each side were close to passing the border. It was 2259 when he and his crew saw the cloaked chopper hovering up ahead. Captain Travis set his SRM’s at the ready and waited for his target retical to lock with the chopper. At 2259 and 29 seconds the target retical locked on and he let 3 missiles loose. 5 seconds later they connected with the bird and it exploded. The cloak was undone and it fell to the earth in a ball of flames. Oscar told him to target the tank that looked like it was getting ready to fire.

Travis fired his second salvo of missiles into the first tank and it blew its lid. He flew over the top of the tank as it was exploding and banked back around to get the second tank. He had 3 missiles left and hoped that would be enough to stop the tank. As he was in his ark the troop carrier had pulled off to the west and they could see the men jumping out and running away. The next explosion was the carrier as Roberts came in from the west and shot a short salvo of missiles into it. Marion had to raise the bird almost straight up and banked toward the north quickly. The second tank fired its first round into the gates and they opened wide. The force that had been sitting on the north began to move and drive toward the open gates. Travis banked his chopper in a big arc to come around on the second tank. Captain Roberts shot her bird north and banked back around. She came in low and hit the first big howitzer in the cab. The thing exploded and turned sharply to the right and rolled onto its side. She had only used the left rack of missiles and shot up and over the caravan of vehicles moving toward the gate. Oscar had told her and Grimes to concentrate on the howitzers so she was banking back around to hit the next one.

Lieutenant Grimes and his co-pilot Dani Hardy flew directly up the middle of the lake and over the north end. They were flying due north when Dani caught the blip on her scope of the cloaked chopper coming in due south. They were on a collision course and there wasn’t much space between them. She immediately told Grimes to lift the chopper almost straight up. His reaction was instant and the other cloaked chopper went under them by mere yards. Dani thought they had to see something being that close to each other and she was partially right. Laurence flew almost straight up and banked to the east and came back around. Dani could see the other bird banking back around also and coming in at a low altitude. She was sure they had seen them for a moment but now it seemed they were searching so they had lost the signal quick enough. Whoever it was flying that machine had an instinct and came in low on the water of the lake and hovered. Dani watched the bird come to a stop and hold its position. Laurence had come in high and was now hovering above the enemy bird. Dani was thinking that this would be the time to take it out before it started to move again and Laurence read her mind. He dipped the bird and lowered it in a slow swoop. His target retical lined up and locked on and he let two missiles fly. The missiles collided with the top of the chopper and the rotor shaft. Laurence had swooped back up and came to a stop as the chopper below exploded and fell into the big lake below. They watched it hit the water in a fireball and then it sank below the surface. Laurence pushed his joy stick forward and they continued toward New Mexico.

Grimes brought the chopper in from the east just as the first big Howitzer rolled over on its side with small explosions. The other two howitzers where moving but slowed down and swerved around the first one. The burning heap of fire that was a chopper lay off to the side of the road and the two big guns drove around it also. Grimes swooped around and came in from the rear of the last one. The streaks of missiles lit up the night as they hit the second one in the cannon breech. Grimes and hardy watched as the second howitzer blew its barrel off and then the magazine exploded also and the second one became a huge mushroom of red and black flame. Laurence saw the third howitzer come to a stop and he and Dani watched the men jump from the truck and run off into the night. He had the chopper flying at a low altitude and came to a stop as he fired two missiles into the breech of the barrel. The explosion lit up the night some more and he dropped the chopper down to almost rest on the road and fired two more at the magazine below the barrel breech. The ensuing explosion from that was spectacular to say the least and the truck began to blow into pieces.

Wyatt and his team watched the explosions in the air on the far side of the gates and the explosions shoot flames into the night sky, they all assumed that the Emperor’s force was being attacked. The big boom from the tank gun slammed against the gate doors and as planned they swung open easy enough. The mine field would be the next thing that would send fire and streamers into the air. All the militia was ready to let loose. The first two hummers that came through seemed to dance over the mines as they exploded and sent both vehicles into the air and over onto their sides. The tank was the next piece of heavy metal to come through. The explosion on its left side caused the track to roll off and as it stopped it began to turn its turret toward the west. Someone had spotted the LAV possibly but not soon enough because the streak of 5 missiles shot into the area between the turret and the chassis and the barrel rose up and slid forward and wound up sticking into the ground as the tank went up in a big ball of flame and smoke. The shrapnel from that explosion whizzed and zinged all over the place. Two more Hummers made their way through the gate and managed to miss any more mines as they began to fire their mini guns in all directions. A missile from an RPG7 landed on the front of the first one and exploded. The Hummer drove through it and twisted to the side before flipping on its side. The second hummer drove around it and continued to spray the mini gun around. Wyatt stood with Michelle and was ready to reload the RPG7 as she targeted the hummer and let a missile streak toward the center of the vehicle. He reloaded the launcher and she fired again. The first missile hit the rear of the vehicle and blew the rear tire completely off. The vehicle twisted to a stop and the man that was spraying the area with the mini gun managed to keep himself upright and swung the gun toward their position. The gun began to spray its rounds toward them just as the second missile hit the turret and blew it completely from the top. Michelle took a couple of bullets in her left leg and went down with a yelp. Wyatt hit the ground with her and looked at her eyes. She was grimacing as he began to drag her to a place of cover. The hummer exploded from another RPG7 round and burned in a big conflagration of fire and smoke.

Howard March was foaming from his mouth as he climbed into the turret of the hummer that was speeding toward the gate. He was spraying the mini gun at the gate to hopefully kill any Texans that may be in that area. He told Lieutenant Peter Mohan to drive through and get around the burning tank. Lieutenant Mohan knew by now that Colonel March was completely insane. He was thinking about stopping the hummer and running for cover somewhere away from this lunatic. Now that the man had climbed into the turret and thrown the man that was there over the side, his hopes were dashed. He knew he would be mowed down if he tried anything and this man would not hesitate to kill anyone that went against his dictator orders. There were two other Hummers in front of him and they went through the gate first. They had slowed and came to a stop first then slowly rolled forward around the tank husk as it burned. The front two hummers crawled around the tank and spread out and began to spray the mini guns. The shooting became ferocious then because the militia and Wyatt’s team were shooting back.

Mohan drove around the tank and the Colonel yelled at him to gun it while he began to empty rounds into the surrounding landscape. He had told Mohan to head south away from the wall as fast as he could and maybe they could get beyond any opposition. Marches thoughts were to get out of range and make his way to the fort where he would meet up with General Sanchez. His delusion had caused him to loose all sensibility. Mohan was not as delusional and was thinking of how to get out of this alive. The mad man on the turret would surely get hit with a bullet sooner or later and he was prepared to surrender hoping that he wouldn’t be shot outright. As he came around the tank husk he was preparing to stomp on the fuel pedal when one of the other hummers exploded right in front of him. The Colonel was yelling something but he couldn’t hear him very well because the explosion had almost deafened him. All he could do now was drive around the burning hummer and head south so he stomped on the fuel peddle and swerved around the piles of burning metal. The vehicle came to a sudden stop and threw him forward violently. There was no sound and he couldn’t see anything but bright light. He could smell the burning ozone and fell out of the open door way. He hit the ground and rolled away from the heat that was burning him. He kept rolling and hoping he would come to a cool place soon. Something splashed on him and he thought he had rolled into a river or body of water then. Whatever had splashed on him felt cool as his eye sight began to return from the bright white light. He looked up and saw some people as they reached down and grabbed him by the arms and began to drag him away from the heat.

Colonel Howard March watched all the destruction of his armor group and his men scattering in all directions. His sensibility dissolved away like lard in a hot frying pan. Mohan was driving the hummer toward the gates and he saw the other two in front of him slow down as they approached the conflagration at the gate and it made his mind explode with anger. Mohan could only slow and wait for the ones in front to move forward. Howard climbed into the back and up on the platform of the turret while he pushed the corporal out of the way. The man was surprised and March pushed him so hard he bounced up against the rim on the side and fell off the back. The hummer had slowed enough that the man hit the ground and rolled. He hopped up quickly as the hummer drove away and ran off the road into the darkness. Howard took hold of the mini gun and began to swerve it around all the while yelling at Mohan to get through the gates. There were bullets flying and ricocheting off the burning metal hulks and the hummer as it made its way around the burning vehicles. Howard began pulling the trigger and the mini gun started to spray its bullets outward. He swiveled it around and was laughing and yelling at Mohan to stomp on the speed pedal. The hummer directly in front of him exploded and he felt a burning sensation in his arm. He kept spraying the gun and then his last moment in this time came as the front of the hummer seemed to run into a wall as it exploded. He was thrown forward over the gun and across the hood. The explosion had bent the front end metal upward and March came down on the ragged steel and was ripped open as his body continued to fly into the roiling fire. His thoughts had stopped at the ragged steel and he left the corporeal body.

The one remaining hummer had come to a stop and the man that was driving quickly climbed out and put his arms into the air as he walked away from the vehicle. The man that was in the turret was hanging over the side, apparently dead from a gun shot wound. The other man inside also jumped out and rolled away. When he came up he was shooting his AR25. The .50 caliber round caught him in the upper chest and he went down quick enough. The fires burning on both sides of the border lit up the night sky with streamers of secondary explosions and the soldiers that were still moving on the North side began to gather in an area away from the burning vehicles. Most of them were completely dazed and had no idea just how devastating this little invasion was going to be. The ones that were still alive on the Texas side were being rounded up and herded to a place against the border wall. The men on the North side began to treat their wounded and it seemed they were done fighting so some of the Texans came across and began to help them. The 1st armor force from the fort had pulled up during the last of the fighting and was parked just south of the fires and burning metal hulks. The Medics that were with the troops began to move around and find the wounded to tend to. Sergeant Carl Granger and Corporal Nathan Quisley found the woman sitting beside a man who had been shot. Carl knelt down and felt for the man’s pulse but found none. He looked at the woman who was dazed and had a blank stare. He asked her name and waited for a moment until the woman looked at him and said “Mattie, Mattie Harrelson.” “Mattie, will you come with me, we have a tent being set up to tend to the wounded.” Mattie looked up at him and this time she had tears welling up in her eyes. “I can’t leave Jack, he needs me.” Carl looked at her and said Mattie your husbands dead we need to get you to the tent and we will collect your husband with the other dead.” Mattie’s tears were falling steady now and she had begun to shake as she started to cry out loud. Carl picked her up gently and began to walk her away from her dead husband. Nathan knelt beside the dead man and closed his eyes. He covered the man with his jacket and moved on to find any others that needed help.

Oscar had told Captain Travis to land the chopper and gave orders for the other two to do the same. Now was the time to collect the living and the dead and deal with the remaining Emperor’s minions. He knew that the 2nd armor group was making their way back to the fort. He had finally gotten word from Lieutenant Shawn Morgan over at the 180 and they had been doing the same by rounding up the Minions and tending to the wounded. He had not heard from anyone over at the 18 yet and it was worrying him. Michael and Daniel had told him that they were heading over to the 18 to help Sam and Mitch and the others and would contact him as soon as they arrived and could see the situation. Oscar was of the frame of mind to push into New Mexico and go to the maniac’s base and lay siege to it or at least make sure it would not be a threat to Texas any longer. He had the 1st armor force with him now and three choppers. They were reloading the SRM’s as he looked at the carnage and thought God why do we do these things to each other? Captain Wyatt came up to him and asked. “You intend to go up to Carlsbad and take that base out Major? This could be the best time because that idiot up there has sent his entire complement to invade us and I would be willing to bet that base is on a skeleton crew now.” Oscar looked at him and asked “How is Lieutenant Thompson doing I hear she took some lead in her leg?” Wyatt was relieved to know that she would be just fine but he was so worried about the whole thing, thinking she could die or loose her leg. “She is going to be just fine major, she was fortunate that those rounds were mostly flesh wounds. She might walk a bit funny for awhile but she’ll make it. However I lost Sergeant Gary Numarian.” “Okay Captain, for now we lick our wounds and figure out what to do with the prisoners before we take on anymore skirmishes. I am still waiting to hear from Sergeant Bradford and the others over at the 18.

C. THE WALL AT THE 18

Major Clyde Grissom was in the lead hummer as it pulled up to the two vehicles that were parked on the road. He climbed out and walked to the hummer that Lieutenant Groinrocker was sitting in. The Lieutenant looked at his chronometer and noted it was 2238. The bastard had arrived earlier than expected. He climbed out of the vehicle and saluted the Major. “Give me a report Lieutenant; is that wall quiet at the moment? I want to know we can blow it down and get through without the Texans giving us a bad time. Yes I know we are off schedule but that can’t be helped, we will take the wall down and double time it to Kermit. I have not been able to reach Colonel March or Lieutenant Bannister yet but according to the time Bannister should have already entered Texas and will be on radio silence. Colonel March will be making his move within the next 15 minutes if he hasn’t encountered any problems so give me some good news.” Ernst Groinrocker knew the Major was not in a good mood so he decided to tell him that everything looked quiet at the wall even though he did not have clear Intel at the moment. It had been at least 20 minutes since he last heard from the sergeant. “Yes sir, the last we heard from the men at the wall was that it was all quiet so it may be that the Texans do not have any or very little opposition at this point and we should blow the wall and make our run to Kermit before they can build up a force to fight us.” “Good Groinrocker, maybe we can get ourselves back on some sort of schedule.” The Major looked through his binoculars at the wall and said “tell your men to get out of the way.” The Major then spoke to his adjutant and ordered the lead tank to set up about 750 yards from the wall and began firing on it. “Get all the armor up here and ready to roll at a double time.” Lieutenant Illyar Yassar Oman called the commander of the first tank and ordered him to move up to the position where he could blast the wall and open up a breech so the force could get through.

Oman called the cloaked Chopper next and told them to get their bird over the wall and give a SITREP. They needed to know if there were any armored vehicles waiting for them. Lieutenant Dirk Hargus gave the order to Sergeant Jeream to pull the lead tank out of formation and move to the coordinance given. “Prepare to fire at these co ordinances when we are set.” The tank rolled out and moved ahead of the force. Captain Raul Normand from the cloaked chopper radioed in that he was on his way coming in from the Northwest at the moment. They had run into some mechanical problems also and would be over the target within the next 10 minutes. Grissom cursed out loud and spit a big wad of chewing tobacco out. “Damnit, this mission seems to be doomed with problems. God it’s a wonder we can even get any of this armor here without all of it breaking down.” He turned to Oman and said “Get that other tank out to the west and bring it up even with Hargus. Get the howitzers ready and move them closer. I don’t want to spend too much time running at the wall from this side. I want those tanks through first and then the 5 hummers that are closest. Get your man down by the wall ready to run through in front of the tanks.” The force of armor began to move into a new formation as the two tanks made their way to the firing point.

Lieutenant Groinrocker called Sergeant Craper and told him to get out of the way, “The tanks are going to start firing at the wall.” There was no answer from the Sergeant so Groinrocker looked through his binoculars and didn’t see any movement. The ladder was still leaning up against the wall and the rear door to the hummer was still open. He turned to Grissom and told him something was wrong at the wall with his men. The Major ignored him and told Oman to move the troops up closer so they could go through right behind the tanks. Grissom finally turned to Groinrocker and said “what do you mean, something is wrong? I said get those men out of the way NOW DAMIT.” “Sir the Sergeant isn’t answering my call and no one is moving down there. Grissom looked like he could blow a fuse any moment but calmly took the radio from Oman and called Lieutenant Hargus. “Hargus you are going to have to clear than hummer out of the way before blowing the wall seems the men have either abandoned it or are dead.” He turned to Groinrocker and said “You can tell me all about this once we are through the wall now get you butt in gear Lieutenant and be ready to go through that wall first.” It took another 20 minutes to get everybody into position and the time was ticking away at 2258 when the first tank fired its 130mm cannon at the vehicle that was sitting in front of the wall.

Jimmy Purvis watched the two tanks roll away from the main body of armor and come closer to the wall. He saw the hummers move closer also and then the troop carrier come down the road and pull off to the side. He did not see any men get out and another one pulled off the road and move to the east of the tanks. The first tank that had rolled forward had stopped and its barrel was moving upward as if it was targeting. It rose to a position pointing upward and stopped. Jimmy told his dad everything that was happening and then the loud boom from the tank made him flinch. The first round hit the hummer that hadn’t moved since it arrived and blew it into the air. It exploded and flew against the wall. Another round hit it dead on and split it into pieces that flew to the side of the road bed. Jimmy knew the humans that were inside of it were already dead but it made him grimace knowing what the bodies were going through now in the wake of the explosions. The next two rounds hit the wall directly and punched a large hole in the structure. The tank was not letting up as two more rounds landed low and high and the wall gave way to an opening that would allow large vehicles to pass through once the debris was scraped away. He heard the screeching, clanking sound of the tracks rolling toward the wall and saw the tank that did all the shooting moving on the road. The other tank that he was aware of was also moving toward the wall that had been blown to pieces. As they came closer he could see the big blades on the front of them and knew what was coming next.

Captain Raul Normand saw the fire ball rise up about 2 miles to his Southeast as he pushed the chopper toward the border wall where Major Grissom was presently moving to enter the Nation of Texas. Lieutenant Kumara Paris was looking at her scopes to see any vehicles on the far side of the wall but the activity on the North side was making the scopes too cluttered so she was waiting until they crossed over the wall before she could read that particular area clearly. Raul asked her what she was seeing because he intended to target anything on the Texas side. She looked at him and said “it is too cluttered at the moment. We have about another mile to cover until we clear the Major’s armor group. You need to cross the border and fly a good mile past that wall and come back. I can reset the scopes once you do that then we can see what is on the Texas side.” Raul swore to himself and cursed the gear that seemed so outdated. He pulled the stick back and the chopper climbed and then moved forward. A few minutes later he crossed the wall and made a big swoop southward and back toward the east. His intention now was to get the scopes clear and open to see what was on the ground on the Texas side. As he completed his arc and began to fly west parallel with the wall Kumara’s scopes had cleared and she was now reading the ground on the Texas side of the border. Her infra red heat scope lit up and she said “Captain, we got a lot of live bodies close to the road and I am picking up some sort of vehicles also. You better notify the Major that there is a big group of opposition down here.” Raul smiled at the news and proceeded to make another arc to the south and come up low and strafe the area with his 30mm auto cannons. He would take out a large path of people and vehicles and let the Major bring his force through. It looked like the tank’s had done their job and were moving to grade the roadway clear of debris.

Lieutenant Richard Lamont had crossed the border to the east about 10 miles from the road surface. He had primed his SRM’s on both sides of the bird and was meaning to take at least one the tanks out before it made it through the breech in the wall. Louie Jordalhski told him that the tanks were moving through the wall and there appears to be a bunch of vehicles on their tale. Richard pushed his joy stick forward and the bird pick up speed. He wasn’t sure which one to target first so he made a pass over and arced back to come in on the one behind to try and block the access.

Raul Normand had made his turn and was coming in low straight up the roadway from the south. His Auto cannons were primed and he pulled the trigger as he approached the field. The ground began to heave and fly skyward as the 30mm rounds tore into it and any objects resting on the surface. His first strafe run took him over the wall and he swooped back around to get his second run. Kumara told him that there were two armored vehicles close to the wall on each side of the breech and he should concentrate on them. He banked sharply and flew back over the wall and made his turn to target the vehicle that was sitting to the west of the breech. This time he was going to fire his left side SRM array and blow that vehicle to pieces.

Lieutenant Dirk Hargus told Sergeant Jeream to blade the debris out of the way as he drove the battle tank through the breech. Lieutenant Fred Miller directed his crew to drop the blade on the second tank and follow Hargus and his tank through the breech. They needed to clear the road bed as quick as possible. There was supposed to be at least 5 hummers go through first but the debris was too thick so they were parked close by and waiting for the two tanks to clear the way. Hargus and his tank had just made it through the breech and were pushing the debris to the side when the strafing began in front of them. Hargus smiled knowing that Raul was doing his job finally. He was giving orders to target a vehicle to the west, close to the wall when the stream of SRM’s slammed into the chassis and the turret. Hargus had been knocked backwards from the explosions and fell into the main compartment. He was dead as his body fell on the sergeant who was loading the breech of the cannon, Sergeant Jeream pushed the throttle forward while raising the blade and the tank continued past the debris field. Smoke was roiling from the engine compartment and into the cockpit of the turret. Both men inside wanted to get out. Sergeant Jeream locked the throttle and released himself from the harness to get out. The turret would not turn and the round that Corporal Bucher had loaded into the breech was hot. Bucher was in panic mode trying to get out of the tank and forgot to fire the cannon. Both men climbed through the hatch that had been left open and onto the platform. The second streak of missiles hit the turret broadside and the whole thing lifted off the chassis and fell to the side as the chassis continued to roll forward. The two men had fallen out and were crushed as the turret came down on them. The round in the cannon breech exploded and the barrel split open. The chassis finally came to a stop and began to explode from the magazine.

Jimmy Purvis had watched the first tank roll up to the breech and drop its blade and begin to push the debris inward. He saw the second tank come up also and do the same just before he jumped back onto the LAV and down inside to prime the chain gun. Melvin had already primed the SRM Launcher and was watching his target computer. Opie Danforth was at the driver controls and was watching the computer also. Melvin saw the edge of the first tank pushing the debris and then the strafing blew the dirt and sheds and some of the oil pumps to pieces. It was the first run that was always the most devastating and surprising. Whatever Chopper was doing it passed over them quick enough and Melvin looked at his target again. The tank had come completely through the breech now and he shifted the launcher until it lined up with the side of the tank and let the first salvo go. Melvin saw the man that was standing on the turret fall backwards and disappear when the missiles connected. He quickly began to line up the second shot as the tank continued to move forward. He saw the big cannon barrel trying to twist toward him and let five more missiles streak toward the beast. The second hit was enough to blow the turret off the chassis and the ensuing explosions were like fireworks exploding into different directions. He was waiting for the second tank to come through as the chassis from the first continued and finally stopped. The next thing that made him jump was the explosion in midair. It was not that far off the deck and the Chopper that had strafed the first time became visible and flew in a huge fireball into the wall just a few hundred feet from his position.

Samuel and Mitch had asked Richard and Louie to fly west about 10 miles and cross the border. They were going to come in from that direction and hit the armor. Samuel was going to go to the east and cross and come in from that direction. As he began his course to the east from the south, Mitch told him that there was a cloaked chopper coming over the wall and moving due south. Samuel decided to rise up and follow the bird to see where it was going. It arced around and flew eastward and then turned into a west flight and crossed the road. He and Mitch watched it bank into the south and then turn onto the path of the road and go low. Samuel had a feeling the bastard was going to strafe the area and sure enough whoever was flying did just that and tore the hell out of the ground and small buildings and some of the old Oil pumps. Mitch followed the bird up and over the wall and watched it make a big arc and come back. This time Samuel waited for it to make its turn and saw that it was going low again and heading for the vehicle that was sitting against the wall. That vehicle had just blown a tank to kingdom come. Samuel came down and dropped right behind the Minion bird and fired a salvo of missiles into the rear engine just below the rotor. The bird exploded and became visible as it streaked in a fireball toward the wall and exploded again as it hit the wall. Samuel dodged upward and flew over the wall through the flame and smoke.

Lieutenant Fred Miller watched Lieutenant Hargus die as his tank was hit with some missiles from the west. Hargus’s tank kept on rolling forward and then a second salvo of missiles hit it and blew the turret off. Fred kept moving through the debris and pushing the rest out of the way. He had directed Sergeant Koch to swivel the turret and target whatever vehicle had shot missiles into Hargus. His turret had swiveled around almost 90 degrees by the time they got through the breech. Sergeant Koch was watching the target computer and as soon as they cleared the breech a vehicle popped up on his computer. He was waiting for the retical to adjust and rest on the target when the rear end of the turret exploded. He was thrown forward violently and instinctively fired the cannon. The round hit the dirt around 50 feet to the south of the vehicle he had been targeting. Lieutenant Miller had been thrown forward also and fell onto the barrel of the cannon as it went off. He was burned and deafened and rolled off the barrel onto the ground. The second salvo of missiles hit the side of the heavy battle tank and blew the rear drive wheel cockeyed which made the track come off its wheels and twist oddly. The screeching noise clearly made the tank come to a halt. Sergeant Koch could not get the barrel to target anything. His computer was in complete static mode and he was in pain from being thrown against the breech of the cannon. He turned and climbed through the hatch to the platform of the turret. Lieutenant Miller was not aboard and he turned quickly to see the breech in the wall. A chopper was burning where it had hit the wall and the smoke and fire was roiling from the rear of the turret.

Lieutenant Miller had fallen on some broken pieces of the wall and was lying crumpled over on the metal and concrete. His body was burned badly from the barrel and his hearing was muffled badly from the cannon boom. He was trying to get up off the rubble when the second salvo of missiles had contacted the far side of his tank. The concussion wave knocked him back down against the rubble and he faded into unconsciousness. Sergeant Koch could see that the tank was blocking the breech and that was going to be a real problem because no more armored vehicles could get through until the tank was blasted out of the way. He jumped down at the back and began to squat run his way back to the North side. He stopped for a minute and turned back and saw Lieutenant Miller lying on the rubble. He hurried back and knelt by the Lieutenant. Once he felt for the pulse, he hefted the lieutenant up over his shoulder and began to carry him toward the breech. Corporal Ronny Sanderson was looking through the scope on the .50 call sniper rifle and had the two men in his sights He had watched the one jump from the tank and scoot toward the wall opening and then stop and run back. He watched him bend down and then pick a man up and struggle to carry him back through the wall. He almost shot the first man but when he ran back and picked up a comrade he just watched as the man successfully carried the wounded man back through the opening.

Lieutenant Lamont and Sergeant Jordalhski had flown over the tanks as they scraped their way through the breech in the wall. When they came back they witnessed the destruction of the first tank and made another arc to the west and came back just in time to see the second tank take its beating. Samuel called and told him to hold off on using any missiles. The breech was successfully plugged at the moment and he wanted to see what the rest of that force was going to do. Lamont took his chopper to the west and set it down on a rise so they could watch the force. There were two howitzers and about 10 hummers and two troop carriers. They could see the troops down at the wall close to the breech gathering and there were 5 of those hummers setting there also. Samuel was on the east side and setting on the ground. The howitzers would be the first targets if they began to move toward the wall. Samuel was hoping these men would give up this hopeless task and go back to their own base. He knew Oscar wanted to make that base obsolete but they really did not like to attack the Emperor on his own soil.

Sergeant Jesse Bradford had made his way over to were the civilian militia folks had set up and found that three of them had been killed in that obscure strafing run from a cloaked chopper. He had assumed that one of Oscar’s choppers took it out when it appeared in a fireball and streaked into the wall. He gave them solace and told them that this skirmish wasn’t over yet so they had to continue to be on guard. He did not know what was coming next but he did know that Oscar’s third armor group was due to arrive any time and they would be able to set up some heavy artillery. The two burning tanks at the breech was testimony to the strong will of the Texans to fight for their freedom. The breech was plugged up at the moment and the only thing that could come through were men on foot and that would be a horrible mistake for them. Melvin Purvis and Hiram Johansson had reloaded the SRM launchers on their LAV’s and everyone was sitting in anticipation of the next move. It was 2330 and Jesse finally received Intel from the other two places of invasion. Shawn had radioed that the attempt to enter Texas on the 180 had failed. Most of the armor and artillery had been destroyed. It was sad that better than half of the troops that came there had been killed. Shawn said they had lost a few of the citizen militia and he lost two men from his squad. He heard from Captain Wyatt Harper and Major Leroux and was told that the 285 attempt had also failed. They all were counting the dead and regrouping. Jesse returned to his squad who were spread out and waiting for the coming attacks.

Major Clyde Grissom sat in his hummer looking at the devastation at the wall, He did not expect this to happen and his rage was building. He had just lost his two tanks. He still had all the hummers so his light armor was fully intact however, he couldn’t get through the breech without moving the tank that was now burning out of the way. The troops that had gathered close to the wall would be a dead ball of meat if he sent then through on foot. He was not willing to do that yet. His only chopper had been hit with something and crashed into the wall on the Texas side. He had the two howitzers but they could not move. He was thinking of setting them up or at least one and blowing another hole in the wall. He had heard only brief Intel from the first tank commander about some light armor on the other side but he did not know where it was located. He glanced at his time piece and noted it was 2335 and he hadn’t heard any Intel from Colonel March or that Lieutenant that was supposed to bust through the 180. The orders were to enter Texas and once inside to go radio silent so they could be in already. General Sanchez was doing something that was secret so he did not know what the mad man had cooked up.

Lieutenant Ernst Groinrocker sat in the lead hummer watching the tank burn as it blocked the access where the wall had been breeched. Sergeant Koch had drug Lieutenant Miller through the opening earlier and the medical team took Miller away. He heard a few minutes later that Miller had passed on. Koch was dazed and was being treated. Ernst waited for the medics to bandage Koch and give him something to get his energy back before he approached him to get some Intel. He sat down in front of Koch and began to question him. “Sergeant, did you get a good look at what they have on their side before you were hit?” Koch looked at the breech and his tank that was now engulfed in flames. He turned to the Lieutenant and asked about Miller first and got a negative head shake. “They have some missile launchers, one on the west and one on the east of the road. Hargus was hit from the west twice and his tank is further in but just a hulk now. I saw the turret blown off before it came to a stop. We were targeting the vehicle to the west when we got hit from the east. Our one and only chopper, was taken out by another cloaked chopper, so somewhere there is a chopper that belongs to them.” Ernst took this all in and then asked “did you see any ground troops?” “Well sir, I would say they have a fair amount of troops hidden in those oil rigs and small buildings. I can tell you this; if you send any men through that opening they will be cut down before they can reach any cover.” Ernst looked at the opening and the tank exploded from the ordinance that was inside. Two men that were close and trying to see what was happening on the other side were knocked down from the concussion. “DAMIT, GET THOSE MEN AWAY FROM THE BREECH BEFORE WE LOSE ANYMORE.” He yelled at the men and told Koch that they were going to have to try and get through to stop the Texans. “We need to move that tank out of the way. I can tell you right now that Major Grissom is going to waste as many as he has to so he can get through. Bloody hell these men are obsessed with taking Texas back. Get yourself ready to make a run through that meat grinder Sergeant.” Koch knew this was going to be their end but it was either, be shot by the Texans or his own officers.

Captain James Bridger led the small platoon of men that drove the hummers, the one heavy battle tank, the one self driven 185 howitzer and the two LAV- 25’s equipped with the SRM missile launchers across the old oil and gas fields toward the old highway 18. Major Leroux had split up the teams in groups of three and his was armor group three. They had by passed the city of Kermit and cut straight through the old oil fields hoping to cut the arrival time down. It was 2340 and they could see the fires burning at the wall that was now only around 10 miles from their position. They had cut over to the 18 or N PINE St as it was so fondly called most of the time, around 20 miles north of Kermit and were driving on that road to the border. James had contacted Sergeant Jesse Bradford finally and asked for a SITREP. Jesse had told him about the breech and the battle that ensued where both heavy battle tanks had been destroyed and now the breech was bottled up with the burning husks or at least one of them. James was impressed that Jesse and his men plus the civilian Militia had been able to hold them. He said they would be arriving around 2350 and would set up in an arc about 1 mile from the wall with the tank the howitzer and the LAV’s. He would bring the hummers closer and the platoon of men. Jesse told him that there were two LAV’s, at the wall presently and they were the ones that had taken out the tanks and there appeared to be at least one cloaked chopper that took out one of the Emperors choppers. James smiled at that and knew that two choppers had come up earlier. He told Jesse that and said they would most likely be on the other side of the wall. James acknowledged and cut the comm., and began to move into position.

Re: Story of fiction and fantasy and science fiction

Clyde Grissom had become very quiet. He was seething inside from the defeat of his first push into Texas. Both of his battle tanks had been destroyed and hadn’t even inflicted any damage to the enemy. Blowing the hole in the wall and trying to clear the road was the only thing he had accomplished so far and the road wasn’t even cleared so he could get his force through. His time piece showed it to be 2345 and here he sat still in New Mexico. He was thinking the General would have him shot for his blunder. Lieutenant Illyar Yassar Oman had left earlier to take inventory of what they had left. He now showed up and climbed into the hummer. Clyde looked at him with blank eyes and asked what they still had. Oman looked at the fires burning in the breech of the wall and spoke without looking at him. “We have two howitzers, two troop carriers, 11 hummers and around 42 troops plus the crews for the howitzers and hummers.” He thought for a minute and continued. “I would say we might have 54 men all toll. We lost both battle tanks and the only chopper we had and one hummer so far. I would say if we can get through the breech we may have a chance to strike into Kermit.” Clyde looked at him and made his final decision. “Set up one of the howitzers and we’ll blow that damn wall open until they can’t stop us. I want it open for at least 100 feet or more and then we can drive the hummers in with guns blazing and get those men into the troop carriers so they can drive through and after that they can spread out and kill the damn Texans. Somewhere along that wall is a piece of light armor and I want it blown to pieces.” Oman knew this man was lost in his own fantasy of taking back Texas. The man was acting without any common sense now. He knew the Texans had many more people and armor than they had and this next move was going to be the demise of this woe be gone force. He had hoped that the Major would retreat at this point and save the men and assets for a time when they would outnumber what was in Texas.

Sergeant Jay Walker shook his head as his team dropped the stabilizers on the rear of the howitzer. The big cannon barrel was unhooked and elevated off the cab. The two gunners stood on the breech platform and loaded the first round. Jay had the trigger and targeting control in his hands and waited for the two men to get out of the way. The Major had ordered this idiotic action and he was going to follow through. His men moved to the sides of the big gun and waited for Jay to fire the first round off. They had already brought the second round up from the magazine and had it standing by for reload. The barrel was almost level with the ground due to the distance of the target which was only around 1 and a half miles. Lieutenant Groinrocker, loaded the troops into the carriers and backed them and the other hummers away from the wall far enough that when the howitzer began firing no one would get hit with any debris. The howitzer was supposed to fire 3 rounds into the wall and then wait for the explosions to clear before he took the hummers and men through.

Samuel and Mitch watched the men set up the howitzer to fire. Richard and Louie did the same thing from the west side. Mitch marked the coordinance on his gear and Samuel raised the bird. On the west side Richard and Louie were doing the same. They both had exhausted their SRM’s so all they could do was use the Auto cannons but Samuel decided to avoid that for now. He flew over the wall and landed in the area where Jesse and his team were entrenched. Richard brought his bird in and landed next to Samuel. They both heard the boom of the howitzer fire its first round and the wall exploded around 50 feet from the west side of the first breech. Mitch hopped out of the bird and ran to where Jesse was and asked about the armor group that was supposed to come up from the fort. Jesse told him they were setting up about a mile south. Mitch hurried back and told Samuel. Richard and Louie were reloading their launchers so Samuel rose and flew to the south. He dropped the chopper close to the main group of hummers and both men hurried to the howitzer that had been set up. The men were just loading the breech when Mitch reached the man that had the target computer in his hands. He gave him the coordinance where the howitzer rested that was doing the firing from the North. The man quickly fed the numbers into his targeting computer and the retical moved into a lock on. Mitch turned and ran back toward the chopper knowing the big gun would deafen him without the ear gear on. The big gun shot a ring of fire from its barrel that leaped out in front for a good 50 or so feet. The barrel recoiled and the truck rocked violently as the big 185mm round flew toward its target.

The men were reloading the breech while Jay adjusted his target computer. He wanted the next round to hit about 50 more feet to the west from the last one. Where the first had hit the wall seemed to turn to powder and there was a big opening with fire and smoke roiling from it. His intention was to dissolve the wall for around 150 feet and that way the men and machines could have a chance to get through without being chewed up to bad. The two men had reloaded the breech and moved to the side once again. Jay was watching his retical move to the west and it was just locking on when the entire truck exploded. The round in the breech blew the entire end of the cannon barrel and loading platform into a billion pieces. The two men that had done the reloading were vaporized instantly. Jay was blown through the air backwards for a good 50 feet before he landed into a pile of cactus. He rolled through it and stopped on the far side. His body had become a pin cushion and the blood from his wounds of shrapnel oozed from their source. He looked up at the stars one last time and wished he was still a boy in Montana as his soul moved away from his corporeal body.

The howitzer that was setting to the front of the one that exploded rocked with a concussion. The crew that was driving and working the beast jumped off and ran away. Major Clyde Grissom swore loudly and hopped up to the platform where the mini gun was primed and ready. He screamed at Lieutenant Oman to drive toward the wall. This was his last ditch effort to kill some Texans. He accepted the fact that his mission had ended and now he would get some revenge. His mind was on one thing only and that was to kill as many Texans as he could. Oman stomped on the fuel pedal and took off toward the wall. He had his own thought in mind and that was to get the Major close enough and then jump out of the hummer and let it go where it would without him. This mission was supposed to be easy and they were going to retake that damn fort that the General was always going on about. But the entire thing had become a total freaking nightmare and he was not going to die for this crazy man or the one that ran the base.

Ernst Groinrocker had heard the big shell spiral overhead and the whistling of that round gave him chills. He was looking back at the howitzer that had fired the first round and watched in slow motion as the thing completely exploded into an array of fireworks shooting off into the night in a thousand different directions. He knew at that moment this mission was over. He was thinking about what to do next when the hummer came barreling toward him and the others. He knew who was in it and if he didn’t do something quickly the mad man would take them all to hell with his incessant compulsion to kill Texans. He turned and told Sergeant Quillar to pull off the road and hopefully he could stop the flow of wanton destruction before the others began to follow the mad man into the hell of that breech. He was too late to stop all of them though as Major Grissom came roaring by standing in the turret on top with his hands on the mini gun and screaming CHARGE or something just as crazy. Three of the hummers pulled out and followed. Ernst was quick enough to stop the troop carriers and pulled in front of them and jumped from his hummer and told them to halt. He would have to explain to them later but for now he was keeping them from entering a meat grinder.

The hummer was still about 100 yards from the breech when Grissom began to fire the mini gun. Oman was frantically looking for his exit from the vehicle. He wanted it to continue through the breech but without him in it. He knew it was going to hurt to jump out at the last moment but it surely was better than going into the hell that waited on the far side. He saw the three hummers behind him and that presented a bigger problem. They were starting to shoot the damn mini guns also. His mind became calm then and he watched as the breech came rushing at him. His nerve finally took over and he slid from the driver seat out the side and hit the ground. He did his best to roll away from the oncoming traffic and managed to roll up against some rubble. It hurt like hell and he blacked out for a few seconds as the three vehicles raced by him into the breech. He heard the automatic fire from heavy machine guns and then everything went black. Groinrocker watched the Major’s vehicle go through the breech and then the other three. The explosions on the far side told him all he needed to know and the other men that were standing around got the same message. Groinrocker had seen the man jump from the Major’s hummer at the wall and when he found him he was still alive. He and a couple of others picked the man up and put him in the hummer. All he could think of was it was time to go home and not to that base, he was done being in the Army for a mad man. They found some others that had run off into the wilderness on their way back up the 18. They didn’t know where they would go but it was sure they would not be going back to the base.

All the people on the Texas side of the border watched the first hummer come through the second breech of the wall and then three more came through right behind the first one there were men firing the mini guns in all directions. The first hummer hit a pile of debris and flipped into the air and landed on its side. They all saw a man stand up and start to run but the second hummer hit him and knocked him threw the air and when he landed he did not move. Jimmy Purvis began to shoot his chain gun and took the first one of the three out while Hans Fieldholf and his daughter Greta hit the second one with their heavy .50 cal machine gun and the vehicle exploded as it flew through the air. The third hummer came to a stop and then sped up once more as it turned toward the Purvis’s LAV. The Chain gun blew it onto its side where it exploded. Everyone had their weapons trained on the breech and waited in anticipation for any more to come through but after a good five minutes nothing had tried to come through. It was 2445 when people began to move around and tend to anyone that was hurt. James Bridger had talked with Jesse and took a small group of men with one of the LAV’s through the breech and found the only thing on the far side about 1 and half miles from the wall was a fully functional howitzer. There weren’t any men or other vehicles in sight. They searched around but found no one. The howitzer that had been blown apart was still burning. They took the good one and drove it back into Texas. James was thinking that a ghost army had tried to invade them and disappeared back into the nether. It seemed the invasion of the 18 had ended with the minimal amount of death and the invading army or what had been, abandoned the field and left.
