In the basement of a prestigious building called the capital building located in Denver Colorado, a sparkling glow appeared and shortly a cylinder shaped object formed. The object was half buried in the cement floor with the other half above the floor level. The computer readout that could be seen through a glass case on the top had a flashing red LED light blinking continuously with the word “STANDBY”. The glass casing was very thick and could not be broken. The casing around the enclosure was fused and looked like part of the cylinder. The object was located far into a corner of the basement where prison bars had been erected and there were a number of prisoners sleeping and or milling around. Jonas Friedman had been one of the guards that had tried to get away from the crazy idiot Emperor when he would shoot up the office and even tried to kill his guards. He had been arrested and thrown into the Dungeon, as everyone called it, shortly there after. He was waiting for his treatment of interrogation and the conditions had caused him to loose weight and wonder if he was going to survive. He was standing against the bars in the back of the cage thinking about his life up to this point when the sparkling glow began. As he watched in wonder, the cylinder appeared and he saw it briefly before the darkness returned and all he could see after was the blinking red light. He turned and went back to his mattress and lay down and dreamed of a place where he was free.
Special Agent Guy Southesby was in a particular foul mood today. This was his 5th day in a row that he had to guard the prisoners in the dungeon. He had made the mistake of telling the emperor that he needed medical help. He was rewarded with this punishment as he thought of it. His aspirations of being one of the emperor’s special guards had been dashed on a pile of rocks as the months went by after his appointment. He had read many, many books on the Roman legions and the special guard of the emperors. His delusions of Grandeur were reinforced with those books and he really thought he was going to be the Emperor’s right hand man. All of his dreams had been thrown in the trash not three weeks after he was finally assigned to the Palace. The emperor turned out to be a mousy little man of no vision. Guy found out the hard way just how sick this little basturd was. The man would kill anything that dared to stand up to him and his psychosis was deadly. He found out that most of the people that lived and worked in the new Capitol hated this man but were in abject fear of him. The toad did command a large amount of soldiers and other very nasty people that were loyal and would do anything for the mouse.
Guy moved toward the back of the dungeon where the blowers were located, that moved air into and out of the dark place. He had recently picked up an old habit that had been outlawed in the early 20’s. Smoking tobacco helped him to relax and he knew if he got caught by anyone in the EPA he could be executed on the spot or even worse, sent to one of those skirmishes where he would be killed anyway but through a long suffering process. As he approached the big fans he saw the blinking red light. His thought of smoking was wiped from his mind as he hurried to see what was causing this red blinking light. When he reached the source his heartbeat began to skip and he swore in a quiet tone. He knew enough about nuclear devices to know this was one and somehow it was placed in this particular spot. He could see the counter that was blinking and the STANDBY word was blinking on and off. His knees became weak and his stomach roiled. He turned quickly and practically ran toward the elevator. As he ran around the cages someone asked him what the blinking light was. He ignored them and reached the elevator. He had to wait for the car and kept thinking that if this thing blows, Denver was going to cease to exist.
In the extra large office on the third floor of the palace, Vinnie sat in his big oversized leather chair reading the latest report from his top generals on the progress of the China skirmish. He had inquired about his secret assassin’s organization but still had heard nothing. He heard rumors of the underwater bases being destroyed but he refused to believe it until he actually heard from the top generals of both bases. The progress of interrogation with the people in the basement or dungeon as he had heard it called was not good. He had become more and more agitated that no information was coming that made any sense. The damn General, in control of the Groom Lake project had not reported in either. He was thinking of making a special trip to light the fire under the man when the cylinder materialized in his office. He jumped from his chair and pulled his pistol. He did not know what to expect but with all the other things that happened such as this, there seemed to be someone or something that tried to kill him. He moved slowly to the object that seemed to be buried half way in the floor. The closer he got the more he began to recognize the thing. He stood over the top of it and watched the blinking red LED word. “STANDBY” was all he could see and he damn near pooped himself knowing that this was one of those nuclear bombs that the crazy general at Groom lake had planted on the west coast. He hurried back to his desk to call Nubron Yankovic, his top man in charge of these things when one of the guards from the basement burst through his door. He almost shot the man, but the man was talking loudly about a nuclear device that someone placed in the dungeon.
The violent cursing from the Emperor, made Guy shrink into himself. He could see the pistol in the toads hand and thought for sure he was going to be shot. “GO GET YANKOVIC, YOU IDIOT, WE NEED ANSWERS AND WE NEED TO SHUT THESE DAMN THINGS OFF. Guy stood frozen for a moment until the Emperor shot his pistol into the floor in front of him. He turned and scampered from the room. As he ran down the hall he thought my God there are two of the damn things and they could be triggered at any moment. He was heading for Yankovic’s office on the second floor. He didn’t know if the man was in or not but he sure as heck wasn’t going to face the Emperor without someone with knowledge of how to stop these damn things. He even wondered where they had come from and how did the emperor know what they were.
Nubron Yankovic was heading back to the White house or Palace, as the Emperor had begun to call it awhile back. He had been to the underground facility that controlled the remaining ICBM’s and other missiles still available. His car pulled up to the main entrance into the building and he hopped out. He had been in on the 10 nuclear devices that General Wagger had planted in the major faults on the west coast of the United States. He knew the complete plans of the emperor and the crazy general and he had copies of the codes of those devices. Shit he thought their all crazy. He entered the building and was heading for the elevator when the doors opened and a guard saw him. The man was almost hysterical as he told him to hurry. He stepped into the elevator car and the doors shut. “What the devil is going on Special Agent?” Guy looked at the man with disdain and blurted out the situation. “There are two nuclear devices on active status in the building, one is in the Emperor’s off and the other one is in the dungeon.” “Where the hell did they come from, who brought them in?” “I don’t know sir but you know how things just seem to show up in this building.” The elevator doors opened on the third floor and the two men rushed out and ran toward the Emperor’s office.
Vinnie Jumped up and scooted around his desk when Nubron and Guy came through the door. He was sweating and his greasy black hair was hanging loosely on his forehead. “Well it’s about time damn it. This thing could go off any time, I need answers and this damn thing shut down and I want it to happen right now.” Nubron walked over to the cylinder that seemed to be buried in the floor. He looked at the top glass unit and Keypad inside with the LED readout that was flashing “STANBY”. He turned to Vinnie and said “this looks like one of those devices that you and that insane man over at the Groom lake facility put together.” He then looked at Guy and said “where did you say the other one was located?” Guy started to tell him when the gun went off. Both men flinched and turned to the Emperor. Nubron spoke loudly because his ears were ringing from the sudden boom of the pistol, “WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?” Vinnie stood with the smoking pistol in his hand and said “Can you stop this thing? You had best be getting to it and as for the other one, that can wait till you get this stopped, so get to it damn it before I have to shoot you.”
Nubron knew this man was crazy but this display of stupidity was beyond the mark of crazy and totally in the realm of insanity that stood on the edge of complete death. He yawned to try to clear his ears and said “we need something to break this glass so I can get at the control panel. You know as well as I do that these glass lids are almost indestructible, so I would suggest, rather than shooting your damn pistol off you could call someone that could bring something we might be able to use to get to the access panel.” Vinnie almost shot the man but instead he yelled at the Special Agent. “GO FIND URI AND HIS CREW AND GET THEM UP HER RIGHT NOW, SEE IF HE CAN SPLIT HIS CREW TO TAKE CARE OF THE ONE IN THE BASEMENT.” Guy didn’t even think for a second as he turned and headed through the door. Uri Reichart was the handy man that could do anything with mechanics and Electrical things. The man could break into anyplace and anything he hoped.
