Jake had moved around 300 yards to the west from the first boulders and called the dog again when he saw it come around the big rock. He sensed the dog was glad to be free but the collar was painful to it. When he spoke, the dog immediately ran toward him and then he saw the leash get caught on some fallen limbs of the yucca trees. He took a chance and flew to the dog and stopped in front of him. The dog looked at him and spoke to him. Will you set me free from this pain? The dog had sat back on its haunches and looked like it was in pain so Jake undid the collar and let it drop to the ground. The Dog was very friendly and was so glad to be free of the heavy ring around his neck. It hurt all the time but the humans that kept him and his other two companions locked up never felt the pain the dogs suffered. Shag moved to the human and bumped against him. Jake picked up the dog and flew back around the rocks. He sat the dog down and told him to be very quiet. The dog watched the human rise up and land on top of the big rock.

The sun had set in the west and dusk was quickly fading as the eastern darkness moved across the land like a wave rushing onto a beach. Jake saw the two men come around the first boulder. Both men stopped and called the dog. “SHAG, COME BOY.” Jake turned around and looked at the dog that remained sitting. He could see the dog was battling a moment of obeying the soldiers and staying free. Jake spoke to him quickly and told him to wait. The dog lay down and put his head on his front legs. Jake turned back to see the soldiers light their torches and flash them around. The soldiers did not call the dog again and shortly, they both turned and left. Jake shook his head at the non concern the soldiers showed about a missing dog but he was glad they did not pursue the search. His next move was to drop down next to the dog and pet him. He had sat down next to Shag as he learned the dogs name and as he patted the dog it raised its head and then moved close and rested his head on Jake’s lap.

Jake talked with Shag and told him about the other animals that he was good friends with while the night sky closed over the top of them. He knew there would be no moon this night so a flying dog would not be noticed he hoped as he picked up Shag who knew what was coming and flew high enough that none of the soldiers could see them unless some star gazer just happened to see a shadow blot out the stars as he and Shag made their way to the Texas border. He came into the southern area and dropped down close to Greg and Tim. Greg was the first to see them as they landed and Jake set Shag down on the ground. The dog stood still for a moment and Jake told him to follow. Jake who was still cloaked walked toward the north and Shag stayed on his heel until he spotted Greg and Tim. Shag stopped again and so did Jake. Greg, talk to Shag he is one of the three dogs from the fort and knows about us. I have brought him to be with us. He is a good tracker. Greg smiled and welcomed Shag. The dog was a golden Lab and Greg fell in love with him right off because he had a dog just like him when he was much younger. As soon as he spoke to the dog, Shag wagged his tail and Jake told him to go. Shag hurried over to Greg and Tim and all three of them became acquainted.

Theresa and Daniel were the next team to the north from Greg and Tim. Jake was flying toward the north to join up with Hank, Mark and Calvin when he noticed the fires on the minion’s line being extinguished. He noticed that it was 21:30 hours and this had not happened before this night. He dropped down to Daniel and Theresa’s position and asked Daniel what he was looking at through his binoculars. Daniel spoke quietly and said “It looks like the troops are dousing the fires; they haven’t done that before tonight. This could be a sign that they are getting ready to move out.” Jeremiah began speaking to all of them telepathically; it appears the Emperors troops are getting ready to make their move so everybody get ready. Keep you eyes on those birds and tanks and pay close attention to the Humvee’s. Hank has said that he has disabled at least three of choppers but they can still shoot, so use the RPG’s the best you can. If we can take out the choppers and Tanks first we may have a good chance. Jake has done the best he can to those tanks but we never know so our priorities are the tanks and the birds first. Michael and Susanna are standing by and will be on top of them before they get to move to far. Everybody stay cloaked and may the Divine Creator guide you all.

Jake levitated and flew toward the North. He was heading toward the Humvee’s and wanted to get into position before the Emperor’s soldiers began their movement. He knew this was going to get bloody and he did not want to kill those soldiers. They were being puppet walked into a death field and he knew there were plenty of them that would not be doing this if the Emperor was not in control. Theresa spoke to Daniel in the mind. We should go and get those other dogs. This is not going to be good for anybody. You and I can move through space and time without the TMG’s and we do not need the belts any longer. I have been inside that fort and so have you. We could also make those death machines go away and those three men that are with the rangers are sitting in that tower. Jock has set the mini guns to knock out the Humvee’s they can see from the North tower. Can we make these troops stop? I know there are only two of us but we can get Michael and Susanna to help. Where is Ian, have you seen him lately? I haven’t seen him since we began to teach the others. I think he is paired up with Randy and no I haven’t seen him either. I heard Randy say something about him before we all came up here. He could help us to stop this murderous action.

Ian sat with Randy Slinger at the southern most position of the rangers. He knew that he and Randy would have to go across the border and stop the Emperors troops. If they did not stop them before they started to move there was going to be a very nasty blood bath. He had taken Randy aside when the others began to teach the new people how to read and speak in the mind and how to use the jet belts and cloaks. He had sensed that Randy already had an open mind and it did not take much for him to open doors to talk in the mind and he began to open doors to be able to levitate without the jet belt and the big one was to be able to disappear without the cloaking device. Randy had exercised with the jet belt and the cloaking device for just a few times when he removed the belt and actually disappeared and reappeared on the cliff top above the camp. Ian went to him and both of them became invisible and flew to the New Mexico side and did a recon on the southern troops and there positions. Ian took him back to the canyon camp and they began to experiment with time and space movement. Randy quickly opened the doors in his mind and soon became like Ian. Ian taught him how to stop or freeze other life forces without harming them. Randy had awoken once Ian began to teach him and his life came into clear focus. He began to remember who he was and where he came from. He knew who he was in previous lifetimes and began to track his existence backward. Ian took him into the no-time and showed him how to move out and in. When the time came to man the line on the border Ian and Randy took the furthest southern post because they both had a plan to try and stop this before people died in mass amounts.

Ian and Randy both heard Theresa and Daniel talking in the mind about trying to stop what was coming. It was only a few hours now that the Emperors soldiers were going to make their move. Jeremiah had sent his thoughts to all of them. Randy was going to move to the North and come back into the soldiers and start removing them as Ian was going to come from the south and do the same. He finally spoke to Theresa and Daniel and told them what he and Randy were getting ready to do. Theresa was glad as Daniel was and she said they were going into the fort and would do the same inside. Daniel had twisted into no-time and came out in the chopper. He told Michael and Susanna what they were going to attempt and about Randy. Susanna told him about Cathy and how she had exhibited the same learning and opening of doors. It was just a matter of time before all of these rangers would be able to do things without the belts and cloaking devices.

It was 03:00 am on the 7th day of May as the young boy from eternity hovered over the group of tents located to the furthest southern point from the snake fort as it had become to be known. He looked into the minds of the men that were sleeping and saw their anxiety and fears of dying. These men were just young boys themselves and how they had been conscripted into this war on the edge of their lives was an enigma to each and every one of them except the older ones who gave them orders to do despicable things to other human beings. Ian could see where they had come from before they had enlisted or been conscripted into the emperors Army. Most of them had family and were forced to join to support the starvation of parents or siblings or even worse the imprisonment of their family members. Most of them never knew of the deaths of those family members after the fact. Ian entered the tents and began to send the boys back to their parents and or families before they became slaves to this moment in time. He knew that Randy was doing the same from the north end and Theresa and Daniel would be working from inside the snake fort. It was a great thing that Cathy and Isaac had joined them and decided to make the tanks and choppers and Humvee’s disappear. Michael and Susanna had also joined the party and the eight mongooses, as they called themselves split up and began to clean up the snakes.

Randy had entered the no-time and re-entered the time line over the campsite of the soldiers at the far Northern edge. He proceeded to do the same thing that Ian was doing at the far southern edge. Randy was sending the soldiers back in time and to their homes or places they were before joining or conscripted into the Emperors Army. He was making his way toward the Fort as Ian was doing. Randy and Ian both had decided to leave at least the leaders of the troops so they would awake to a non-existent army.

Cathy materialized inside the chopper that Hank had not been able to disable. It was dark outside at 03:00 hours but there were spot lights that lit the landing pads of the choppers. She knew that it would not be long before the pilots would be coming to prepare these machines for battle. Her thoughts took her to how fast she was able to open the doors in her mind. Isaac was already in that state of being from his experience into the Dulce underground base. He and Jimmy had been opened by the other team that came from the haven. When they all began to learn at the canyon camp it was as if she had been standing at the doors for a long time waiting for the locks to be picked. When Theresa and Susanna began to teach them how to communicate by telepathy it was as if the doors began to open by themselves and she stepped into those rooms and found her true self as she walked through the corridors of infinity within her being. She stepped into the no-time and became one with the Divine Creator along with Isaac. She could see the others opening doors but just a few at a time. Randy Slinger was just like her, he was able to open his mind and walk along opening the doors. Hanna and Uri were together and would soon enter the universe to do the same as she and Isaac had done. She moved to the pilot’s cabin and began to make all the gear disappear. Her plan was to strip these birds so they would be just shells with no engines or weapons or any thing in the pilot’s cabin that resembled controls. She knew that Hank had done something to the computer systems but she wanted it all to disappear. As she moved from one bird to the other, Isaac was doing the same to the tanks.

Michael and Susanna had taken the part of making the Humvee’s blank boxes with no engines, weapons or even seats. Susanna took the North side and Michael took the south side and soon enough the Humvee’s were nothing more than empty boxes. Susanna and Michael both returned to the chopper and laughed about what they had done. They both knew that Cathy and Isaac were doing the same to the choppers and tanks and it would be so funny to see who actually found the vehicles in the shape they had become. Both of them knew that this little invasion from snake fort was not going to be a blood bath after all. It was going to be a major set back for the Emperor in fact. Theresa and Daniel were going to remove the dogs and the good men from the fort before they caused it to collapse into a giant sink hole. Kevin and Kristyl were up around the Farwell sight to help those folks stop the invasion and Samuel and Mary had told them that they were heading to Mentone. Michael had thought about going down there and helping out so Susanna made contact with Jeremiah and told him what they were going to do. Jeremiah had a good laugh about what the Mongoose teams were doing and was relieved. He knew they would have to remain guarding the snake fort until it was abandoned. What was coming could relieve them to join the Northern teams or even the Eastern teams. It was not known yet what the Emperor had in mind for those areas. Daniel told him that he and Theresa would meet Samuel and Mary at the Mentone fort. There were also the Patriots gathering around Denver for that big push. So that was on every ones mind but Texas had to be secure first. Michael raised the chopper out of the canyon and pointed toward the south. “Mentone here we come.” Susanna had wanted to see her sister and now they were on their way.

The Kennel was set away from any other buildings on the base. The building was small in size and had two small windows that were high up on the walls. The front door opened into a room that had a large cage inside. The two dogs that were inside were both lying down as Theresa materialized inside the cage. The dogs raised their heads to look at her but neither of them let out a bark. Theresa could see that they were starved and the energy level in them was very low. There was a big water pan close to the cage door but it was empty and the food dishes looked like they hadn’t had any food for a few days. The tears welled up in her eyes as she felt the pain and despair in both dogs. She moved to them and bent down, and spoke to both. It’s time to get out of here, I am going to take you to a place where you can eat and drink and get better. The dogs looked at her and tried to wag their tails but it was a feeble attempt. She was sitting in between them and reached out. The barn at the haven was quiet but Theresa talked to the other dogs and told them to come and meet two new companions. The water trough was full and Joanna was sitting with Philamena. She saw Theresa and hurried over and caught the feelings from the two new dogs. She and Theresa had a good talk and she fetched some food for the two dogs as Theresa stood and said she would be back later.

Inside the fort walls there were only about 50 men. The pilots and their co-pilots for the choppers were in one barracks while the tank crews were in another. The men that would be driving the Humvee’s had all been stuck in another barracks building and then there were the men that manned the fort on a regular basis. The two officers that commanded the fort had their own quarters within the HQ building. Daniel had moved around and looked into the minds of the men as they slept and found that most of them did not want to be here and especially being involved in this movement to invade Texas. He began to send these men back in time and place like Randy and Ian were doing. He left the chopper pilots and the tank commanders and a few of the Humvee drivers. Theresa joined him and together they found Jock Savage in the northeast tower with Lance Rodgers and Bill Larsen. Jock told them that the other Guard towers were occupied and the men in them were all Emperor Minions. He had set his mini guns up to take out the Humvee’s on the North side but that was all he could do. He was sure that when he and his compatriots fired on the Humvee’s the others would take this tower out but they were ready to die. Daniel felt for them and told them he was going to send them to another place where they could join with the patriots to fight the Emperor. He told them that the snake fort was going to cease to exist after this day was done. All three men found themselves in a large cavern and were greeted by a Major and a Lieutenant who promptly got them acquainted with other soldiers.

Ian and Randy stepped out into the time line at their previous guard post and smiled. They would not be seeing any soldiers coming from the New Mexico state today. They had spread the word to the others up the line to just keep an eye out for any stragglers that might come this way later. Cathy and Isaac materialized back at their gun post and hugged each other, it seemed the solution that Daniel and Theresa had arrived at was the best and this would be a bad day for the Emperor. What the little toad would do after finding out how his fort and soldiers had come to a bad end was not known yet but it was a sure bet that he would react in a nasty way. They both knew what was going to happen to the fort and passed the word along to be watching for anyone that might survive.

Major Fredrick Gorshavic stood in his living quarters drinking his first cup of coffee. He was waiting for Lieutenant Brandon Horiwitz to show up. It was 03:45 am on the 7th of May and they would be moving across the border at 05:00 am this morning in the push to destroy the Texas Rangers and move toward Lubbock where they would destroy that city before going to Dallas and on to the capitol city of Houston. The fort to the North at the I-40 would be making their move to secure Amarillo while the platoons at Texico would push into Farwell and spearhead to Lubbock and meet up to form a bigger Battalion to strike into Dallas. The northern battalions and Eastern Battalions would wait to hear from the Western movements before making their strike into the Nation of Texas. Fredrick had been itching to kill the rangers. They were a major thorn in his side and he never could catch any of them and their hideout could never be found. Of course he had quit sending any scouts into that god forsaken land because they never returned. He could swear there was real bad spirits or something over there and it made him itchy all over. The two companies of soldiers he had been given were not near enough and he had voiced his concerns to the damn generals but was humiliated by them in front of the Emperor for being a coward. The Emperor made it a point to tell him that if he failed in his mission to kill or capture any of the rangers he would not live to regret it. Damn he really hated that little toad. He was going to be in one of the choppers and hopefully they would find the hideout of the rangers and blow them off the map. He was mulling over the days activities when the knock came on his door.

“Come” he said as he poured himself another cup of coffee. Lieutenant Horiwitz opened the door and moved to stand next to a map of the border that was directly to the east of the fort. The map extended to the north around 20 miles as well as to the south about the same. There were markers of places that were suspected of being possible hideouts of the rangers. “Get a cup of coffee; I take it you have eaten as well as the others?” “Yes sir, the pilots and tank crews are just finishing up as we speak. They will be going to get the birds and armor warmed up,” he looked at his chronometer and continued. “Captain Schist and lieutenant Bollworm will be awaiting your boarding. I am going with Lieutenant Noland in his tank. I think we should be firing into the damn canyon first.” “Yes lieutenant, I think you are right but not before Captain Schist makes a good sweep through it and the other choppers should follow us.” Horiwitz nodded in acknowledgment and studied the map one last time as he sipped his coffee.

The Humvee crews had entered the mess hall just as the pilots were finishing up. The Tank crews were sitting around some tables off to themselves. It seemed that the tank crews and the Chopper boys had an affinity for each other. They never seemed to get along. Sergeant Slapper and Corporal Fist sat down with the other Humvee crews and watched as the flyboys begin to leave the room. Whoever cooked this food this morning was gone and that seemed a little strange? The food was stacked in heated bins so everyone was helping themselves. Sergeant Slapper looked around and noticed something totally different. There were none of the regular soldiers that inhabited this fort in the mess hall. He had seen them glob up the food lines everyday since he had come here 3 weeks prior. He had even got to know some of them so not seeing them this morning threw flags in his face. This was the day they were going to invade Texas and he expected to see this cafeteria full. He looked at Sergeant Potter and asked “hey Ted, you seen any of the regulars in hear this morning? Sergeant Ted Potter had been in the mess hall for at least 30 minutes now and as he looked around, the absence of the regulars slapped him in the face. He turned to Carl and said “I haven’t seen any of them since I have been in hear this morning, kinda strange don’t you think? Maybe they were sent out to the lines.” Ted kept looking around and said “where is Sergeant Garrison and his crew and I don’t see Earl Harding and Corporal Tomilson.” Carl Slapper shook his head as if to knock the cobwebs away. “Damn, I didn’t see them in the barracks, what the hell is going on?” He stood up and moved toward the doors. “Where you going Carl, wait up.” Ted Potter stood and followed Slapper. Both men crossed the yard to their barracks and entered. The building was empty; they looked around and found that the racks of the missing men were not even used. They looked in the lockers and found that they were empty. It was as if these men didn’t exist but that was crazy, Slapper had talked with them the day before. “What the hell is going on here,” Carl said to the air. He spun around and headed for the doors.

Carl and Ted hurriedly walked to the enlisted barracks of the regular soldiers that were stationed at this fort. Carl burst through the front doors and stopped frozen in place. There were only 4 racks in this particular building. He turned and rushed out and went to the other one. When he entered he could see only 5 racks. None of this made any sense. He looked at his chronometer and looked at Ted. It was 0400 hours and they needed to be at their Humvee’s getting ready to cross the mile to the border and into Texas. Ted had his Humvee on the south side of the fort whereas Carl’s was on the North side. Carl almost ran back to the mess hall and told Ted to get his team and get to his vehicle. He burst through the doors and stopped so suddenly that Ted smashed into him. Both men almost fell over. The mess hall was empty. Both men turned and ran out and split up, Carl running to the gate that would take him to his Humvee on the North side while Ted did the same toward the south side. Carl ran through the open gate and saw the tank crews standing around. They had grouped up and no one was in the tanks. He thought that was weird and ran for his Humvee. Sergeant Harsh and his two man crew were standing between his Humvee and theirs. He did not see any of the other crews. He saw Corporal Fist standing next to his Humvee but did not see private Meek. He slowed to a walk and approached Fist who seemed to be in a daze. “What is the matter with you, we are supposed to be leaving for that border in 20 minutes. You know how this vehicle has to warm up?” Fist looked at him with a far off stare and motioned with his hand at the Humvee. Carl looked at him and asked where Private Meek was as he approached the vehicle. He did not hear Fist give an answer and opened the door to his Humvee. His heart did a rhythmic jump in his chest and he backed away from the vehicle. There was nothing inside the shell all he could see was ground and the exterior of the vehicle on the inside. He spun on Fist and grabbed him, and began to shake him. What the hell is happening here, where are the men, what happened to this vehicle?” He gazed at the other crew but they were as perplexed as he was. He ran to the other vehicles and saw the same thing. He backed up and looked at the turret on top and it was empty, No mini-gun which was the same for all of them. Four empty boxes on wheels.

Lieutenant Noland had gathered his crew and met with the other two crews that would be operating the tanks. He was to wait for Lieutenant Horiwitz before they began their approach to the border. The other tanks would split up and go south and north. When he came through the gate he noticed the crews standing in a group and talking quietly. He approached and asked what was going on, the tanks should be idling by now. Lieutenant Veritas looked at him with a blank face and said, “We don’t have any tanks Noland, These things are just shells like a cardboard box.” Lieutenant Noland heard what Veritas said but it did not register with him. He walked to the tank and climbed up and got to the turret. The heavy machine gun was gone, he dropped into the pit and opened the hatch and froze. All he could see was the ground. He looked inside as best he could without falling and there were no computers or controls of any kind. He looked back up and the cannon barrel was still there. This was all crazy, how could this be? He was at a complete loss. It was when the Humvee crews came over and said the Humvee’s were empty boxes that he looked through his binoculars at where the line of troops were supposed to be and saw only a few men standing around. He slowly lowered his binoculars and jumped from the tank to the ground. He looked at the crews and walked toward the gate. This was the strangest thing he had ever witnessed and he was going to have some words with the Major.

On the south side of the fort the chopper crews and Humvee crews were standing around in a group also. Captain Schist and lieutenant Bollworm had opened the hatch to their chopper and Schist was silent for a few moments before he started cursing. The inside of the bird was blank; it was as if it was just a shell with the rotor attached as an illusion or sick joke. He found out quick enough that the other three birds were the same. “Damnit Bollworm, this is completely beyond anything I have ever heard of.” He looked at the other pilots and started to move toward the gate. It was 04:15 am and these birds should be warming up. Sergeant Lance Browning approached the Pilots at that moment leading the other Humvee crews. “What the hell is happening here Captain, our vehicles are nothing but shells, like fake empty cans and there ain’t any troops on the south line except a few sergeants? How are we supposed to invade Texas without any troops or armor support? This entire joke of an invasion is stupid.” Schist just looked at the Sergeant with disdain and spun around to continue his walk back into the fort, he was going to have some words with the damn Major about this funny business.

Sergeant Newman Haley and Corporal Ken Jordison stood in the Southeastern tower and watched the Pilots and Humvee crews gather close to the choppers. They couldn’t hear the conversations that were happening but it did seem that these men were upset about something. Haley looked through his binoculars at the Texas border and could not see any rangers or any defense force. He knew the rangers could hide very well so that wasn’t any flag to him but this business happening on the chopper pads gave him pause. The choppers were supposed to be warming up for the invasion that was to begin in 30 minutes. He had turned his binoculars to the group and saw one of the men point toward the south. He swung his binoculars toward the south then and stopped for a second. Then spoke to Jordison. “What happened to all the troops that were lined up down there, they seem to be gone.” As he was saying this he swung his binoculars across the land toward Texas to see if the troops had already started their advance. He couldn’t see any and said “this is real peculiar, where are they? Call Savage, I want to know what he sees on the North side.” Jordison called Savage on the two way radio but there was only static. Haley swung his binoculars to the Northeast guard tower and swore. The tower was empty as far as he could see. “What the”, he spoke and swung his binoculars to the Northwest tower. He could see Corporal Orland and Private Korland looking down toward the North. Mumbling to himself he swung the binoculars to the Southwest tower and saw Sergeant Young and Private Cordiner. “Call Orland, I want to know what is happening to The North Damnit.”

Major Gorshavic and Lieutenant Horiwitz were packing their small bags in preparation to move out into the destiny of recapturing Texas. The Major had dreamed of this moment so much since his first briefing of the invasion. His actions reminded Horiwitz of a puppy dog that would shake itself to the point of peeing all over when it was greeted by its owner. His mind was settled on the killing of the Texas Rangers that no one could ever find and who caused so much grief for this fort. When the fully equipped missile silos became empty and full of snakes it spelled the end of his career. He remembered the whole affair and it still made him red hot angry. Today was going to be his retribution against those damn Indians as he called them. Both men had strapped on their side arms and were heading for the door when it burst open and Captain Schist stood in the opening. The man had his pistol in his hand and just stared at them. Schist stepped in and stood to the side as he told the Major and the Lieutenant to back up. Lieutenant Noland, bollworm and Veritas moved in and stood next to the Captain. Gorshavic and Horiwitz were completely taken by surprise and stepped back as the Captain told them to do. “What is the meaning of this Captain Schist? You had better explain yourself as well as the rest of you.”

Schist was the first to speak. “Suppose you tell us Major, just what the hell you are pulling off here. We do not think it is funny that our choppers and tanks and Humvee’s are all fake boxes of nothing and most of the troops are gone missing and by the way most of the men that are stationed or were stationed here are gone also. So tell us Major and you too Lieutenant.” The Major and the Lieutenant looked at each other and turned to the group. “We don’t know what you are talking about Captain but we need to make our move toward that border, it is now 04:50 and we must move at the same time the other commanders’ move give or take a few minutes.” “I don’t think you heard me Major, There is not going to be an invasion today or any other from this particular fort. The companies are gone; our choppers are nothing but empty tin cans as well as the tanks and the Humvee’s. Most of your men that were stationed here are missing. There are only the few of us and you and maybe around10 more between the north and south lines. You have two Humvee’s that are still in working order and we are taking them. You can stay and pretend to play this dirty little war you and your kind dream about but we are not going up against God knows what without our weapons, our armor or troops.”

The rumbling started and the building shook. Schist said “WHAT IS THAT?” as they all heard the crashing of a building. They all turned and ran outside. The men who had stayed outside were running toward the west gate when the fisher opened up and they disappeared. The men that just ran out of the HQ heard the screaming as those men fell to their deaths. Schist grabbed three of the pilots and ran to the first Humvee that was parked next to the building. They piled in and the building next to them caved in. Schist had started the vehicle and peeled away from the building as it fell in on itself. Schist was heading for the side gate when the buildings began to fall into a giant sink hole. He drove the vehicle through the gate just as the wall crumbled and the rear of the vehicle was caught in the earth as it fell away. The men began to scream but the rumbling noise and the crashing of the buildings drown out their screams as the vehicle disappeared into the dirt and rubble of the structures that encompassed the fort as the entire structure began to fall into the giant hole that was caused as the earth fell away. The old silos that were empty also fell into the hole. The men that were in the towers tried to jump clear but to no avail as the structures fell inward and down into the sink hole.

Sergeant Harvey Wallbanger was standing in the group of 8 others about ¾’s of a mile to the south of the fort when they heard the rumbling and watched in amazement as the base/fort began to disappear into the earth. They had already been wicked out that their men had gone missing and now the entire fort was disappearing right before their eyes. To the North another small group of soldiers witnessed the same thing. They all watched as the smoke and dust raised in great billows the size of the perimeter of the fort. It was clear in their minds that something completely unreal had happened this day and they were all glad that they did not have to walk into a murderous spray of bullets and die on the desert floor of New Mexico. Sergeant Laurence Oliver decided to lead his men to the Texas border and surrender to the Texans. They all dropped their weapons and began to walk to the east. It was a good mile to the border but it was a sure bet that they would not make it to the west and all of them were ready to be shod of serving the Emperor. The Men to the south had come to the same conclusion and began to do the same. The smoke and dust from the sink hole rose into the sky for a good mile on this 7th day of May 2039.

Eight unarmed soldiers on the south end of the sink hole made their way to the big wash and began to enter to approach the Texas border when four rangers materialized in the air right in front of them. They were told to follow them and they all moved through the wash in a special path to avoid the claymores and IED’s. On the North end the 5 soldiers crossed the flats and started to enter the wash when four other rangers materialized and led them through the deadly mine field. The soldiers from both ends were very thankful that they did not try to cross this big wash in their rush to invade. The Rangers took them in and began to recruit them into the Texas Nation.

Daniel, Theresa, Ian, Randy, Cathy and Isaac levitated to the big sink hole and began to fill the giant hole with more dirt from the surrounding sides. All of the silos had fallen in and were no longer visible. They all made the empty vehicles and choppers disappear and cleared the tents and camp sights that had been left by the soldiers on the north and south lines. The area had become a natural landscape once again except for the rather large indentation with an old road ending at the edge of it. When they were done, they began to remove the mines that had been planted and send them to an armory in Dallas. This part of the border became a barren desert once again. It had been pocked marked with farms at a time in the past and perhaps it would be that way again. Daniel, Theresa and Ian were going to meet up with Michael and Susanna down in Mentone and it was known that there was an invasion happening down there as they spoke. Randy, Isaac and Cathy decided to stay with the rangers at this border for now and they planned to patrol to the north and south further to make sure that the Emperor did not try to place more of his minions into the open areas. The men that had come from the lines had all pledged their allegiance to the Nation of Texas and for once in their lives they had real purpose and the fight for right was on their side. It was 07:00 am on the 7th of May when all of this was said and done and Jeremiah was waiting for communication from Sam Houston about the Northern and Eastern borders. The Mongooses had taken the snakes down. All was well at the moment.

63 THE ROAD TO LUBBOCK

Mica Isazi had made it back across the border. He had to drive 25 miles north of Texico before he could go east to cross. The car he was driving ran out of gas and he coasted it into a big clump of brush. He had to walk at least a mile to cross over and spent another day once inside Texas, getting to Bovina. He knew the Sheriff and planned to give his Intel once he reached the town. The country side of farms appeared to be deserted as he walked on the back road. He thought that the good people had already been warned of an invasion and were hunkered down. He finally came across an old truck on the side of the road and was able to get it started. He then drove into Bovina which was only a few more miles. As he drove into the small town, he noticed that it was deserted or that was the appearance and feeling. He drove straight to the sheriff office and parked the truck. When he reached the front door it was locked. He looked through the windows and the office was empty. He really needed to get to the radio but breaking into the office was not going to be a good thing to do. As he climbed back into the truck, Sheriff Roberts drove up and seemed to be in a hurry. Mica climbed out and waited for the Sheriff to get out of his car.

Kirk climbed from his car and hurried toward the office, He needed to grab the other AR25’s and the rest of the ammo for them. He saw Mica standing next to a truck and said “good to see you Mica, I am glad you are here. You come to help? We are getting ready to have this damn battle with those soldiers down at Texico. Seems they want to invade us or something. Help me get the rest of the weapons, we got two Humvee’s equipped with the .50’s.” Kirk had opened the office and was rushing toward the small armory he had in the back room. Mica listened to him and knew the invasion was just beginning. He needed to inform Amarillo but somehow he figured they already knew and could be in the middle of a battle right now. “How many people you got Kirk and do you have any armor? Those people got two tanks and two choppers, I was there two days ago and they definitely seemed to be ramping up to attack.” Kirk unlocked the chain that secured the rifles and handed two to Mica. Mica could see that there were 7 rifles and took two more as Kirk grabbed what he could and ran for his car. “We got to get these to the folks that are dug in down at Farwell.” As they took the rifles to the car, Kirk said “there are 10- 200 round ammo can’s in there that need to come with us. Grab yourself a side arm and take one of these rifles while you’re at it. We got men coming in from the ranches with their LAV-25’s and hopefully they can get into position before those soldiers come through that wall.” Both men were running back and fourth from the car to the office. Kirk side stepped the third time in and grabbed a Kevlar vest and tossed it at Mica. “Put this on, it might save your life, hurry we got to get down there ASAP. Henry and Martha are already taking one of the Humvee’s down there and the other one is being driven by two boys I deputized this morning, lets go, The time was 20:37 pm on the 6th of May 2039.

Captain Jon Ritter sat in his office on the small base just west of Texico, contemplating his orders from General Harchall. It was just a few hours away that he was going to invade Texas and push his way to Lubbock. He was supposed to meet Major Gorshavic from the No nuke fort and Major Cramer from the I-40 fort on the 10th of May. His company was the closest and he was to set up a blockade on the Northwestern side of the city while Major Gorshavic would come in from the southwest and spread his troops around the southern outskirts of that city. Major Cramer was going to lay waste to Amarillo and drop directly south so he would take the North and spread around to the east. Once they were in place they would lay waste to Lubbock and join forces to move toward Dallas. The plan was to surround Dallas and wait for General Thomar to bring his Battalion from Oklahoma while General Boudreaux pushed in from the east. Dallas would fall to the Brigade of troops with the choppers and artillery. From there they would move to Houston and wipe it off the map or at least take it and Texas would fall to the Emperor. The orders had filtered down that the Emperor did not want prisoners other than the President and his cabinet of Texas. It seemed that the Emperor had big plans for them. Ritter shivered at that thought because he knew how psychopathic the little toad was and most men were afraid of what the man would do at any given time.

Jon was no fool; he knew this wild hair brained scheme of the emperor was a pipe dream at best. The real army that might have taken Texas back was lost in China and could not get back to the States. All the fighter planes and bombers had been lost over their. The ones that remained in the States had slowly been demolished by the patriotic forces that could not be controlled. The police forces and what military that was available had started becoming impotent in this country over the last 5 years. He had heard of the fiasco that happened a few weeks earlier where Boudreaux had tried to enter with a full company and lost a full compliment of 200 soldiers to the civilians of Texas. He knew that the Nation was fully armed. Every citizen had guns and the armor was plentiful also. He did not know what kind of air power they might have and that scared him. The Texans were fierce fighters and that gave him even more nightmares. He knew deep down he was going to loose plenty of men on this excursion. His plan aside from the Generals was to save as many of these men as he could so he devised his own plan of attack.

Jon had 1 platoon of men on this little outpost who consisted of 4 squads and a full compliment of 50 soldiers including the officers. For the last three weeks he had been getting a steady boost of troops from north and south. The two M1A30 tanks had arrived just this past week and the two choppers had flown in just three days earlier. His compliment of soldiers to date was 125 enlisted and 14 officers. In his mind this was not near enough troops and armor to penetrate into a country full of guns. Farwell was a small town and he did not know what they might have for defense. His plan was to shell it from this side thoroughly until he could send a tank and some Humvee’s through the big steel doors. He would then send the troops through behind those vehicles. The two choppers were going to cloak and fly in from the north and south to strafe any type of armor the Texans might have. He had already sent one of the tanks and a Humvee with 29 troops to the south two days prior. They would enter into Texas and make their way over to the route 70 and block the road for any escape from Farwell as he laid waste to it. He was hoping to get through that gate city without any casualties but he knew there was bound to be some. He had set up the ground mortars that could be moved by two men. The tank he kept and would go through the gate behind the Humvee’s and mop up any pockets of resistance, had been moved west far enough to shoot its cannon with accuracy over the wall. He had stationed men on the top of the wall to give SITREP’s and targets for the tank. He was lying on his bed thinking of all this and how it was to start at 05:00 am. He wanted the tank to start firing at 04:30 am so the town would be on fire and in rubble before the troops went through the doors. He looked at his chronometer and decided to get a few hours of sleep. It was 23:10 pm so he turned off the light and fell into a fitful sleep full of anxiety.

Walt Peterson had stayed on the old cell tower for the past two days. The activity in the out post on the far side of Texico had become almost furious. He had watched one tank travel west on the old route 60 for a few hundred yards as best he could tell and spin around with its cannon pointing at the wall. He didn’t see the other tank and wondered where it was. The Humvee’s were parked in a row close to the gate off the post. He had watched men putting things into them the past day. The two choppers still sat on their pads and no one had come close to them. He could see the big power cords laying across the ground running from a building to them. He knew they were being continuously charged. His daughter climbed the tower and set a basket of food on the platform for him. “Dad you gotta eat and I want you to come down tonight and get some proper sleep. You can get Ollie Hargrove to come and keep watch. You can’t keep this up; you know your heart can’t handle this.” Walt lowered his binoculars and looked at his daughter as he reached into the basket and pulled out a sandwich. “What’s in the sandwich tonight?” Carla just looked at her Dad with a frown on her face which he couldn’t see because it was dark. “It’s roast beef Dad and there is some potato salad and some apples and here is your thermos full of hot coffee.” “Thank you my dear lovely daughter, I don’t know what I would do without you.” If Walt could see his daughters face he would notice the tears welling up in her eyes. Carla had lost her mother one year ago to a cancer that was terminal. Her father had become very distant to her after that and stuck to himself. Most of the folks became concerned for him and mostly her because he just shut himself away from everybody. She looked at her chronometer and said. “It’s almost midnight Dad, why don’t you come down and get some good rest; I can go and get Ollie.” Walt could hear the pain in his daughters voice and said “Okay sweetie you go and get Ollie and send him on up. I will eat my dinner while you do that and as soon as he gets here I will come home. Carla smiled and her heart jumped with relief. She kissed her Dad and scooted to the ladder. “I’ll see you at the house” and she was climbing down the ladder. She was going to get Ollie and tell him to hurry.

Kirk and Mica Pulled up to the two Humvee’s that were parked on the side of the old State Route 60, and noticed the small group of men and boys standing around talking with Henry and Martha. Kirk hopped out and opened the trunk of the car. “Over here boys, get yourselves armed and grab the Magazines and take the extra ammo cans.” The three men and 4 boys hurried over and began to arm themselves. They were about 1 mile from the border wall and Kirk asked Henry, “any news about the movements yet?’ “Yeah Walt says they moved one of the tanks back a ways on the old 60 and it is just sitting with its barrel pointed at us. He also says the post is quiet at the moment but the personnel activity was real busy earlier. He hasn’t seen the other tank but you bet its setting somewhere ready to advance.” Mica heard the part about the tank being moved back and then pointing its barrel toward the wall. He asked Henry if Walt had said anything about the angle of the barrel. “No he just said it was pointed at the wall.” Mica looked at Kirk and asked where all the people were at the moment. Kirk looked at him with a question on his face until the light bulb came on. “Oh crap, he exclaimed, those bastards are going to shell us. Henry and all of you get into town and tell the people to get out of their houses. Tell them that we are going to have to be on the move as best we can. If this is what I think, they are going to shell us until they think they can come through the wall doors with some safety. If they bring those damn Humvee’s through first they will rake the area with those mini guns and that ain’t gonna be pretty. We need to get everybody as close to that wall as possible. Henry you take these Humvee’s down there and park as close as you can get to the doors and whatever comes through you empty the .50’s on, you hear me?”

Martha knew this was going to be bad for Farwell. She had packed the RPG’s in the Humvee’s and had placed the claymores and hand grenade crates in the vehicles also. “Henry, we can plant some of the claymores at the gates and everybody needs to carry some of the grenades. We have two RPG’s and plenty of rockets for them so someone needs to get located in direct firing sight of the gates.” Mica walked up to Martha and said, Show me the RPG’s and you know how to activate the claymores so let’s get going, I don’t think we have much time before this fiasco starts. Two of the young boys, who couldn’t be more than 15 or 16 volunteered to go with Mica. Mica was reluctant to drag these two youngsters into where he was going but an older man came over and said “These two are my sons and they know how to fight, you won’t deny them the right to fight for their freedom now will you?” Mica had a moment of heart felt regret for possibly insinuating that anyone would not be good in this fight. He stuck out his hand and said “I am Mica and I would be honored to have both of you with me down at that wall. The older boy shook his hand and said, I am Kenneth Lariby and this is my brother Robert and we both know how to use the RPG’s.”

25 miles southeast of Texico and 5 miles inside the Texas border, Lieutenant Anton Lomax stood in the pit of the turret on the tank. They had just left a large farm house on a county road where they found it to be completely empty. The 29 troops had searched the entire house and barns and only saw the animals. Anton thought it was very strange that they had been able to get this far in without some resistance from the Texans. They had driven by a number of farm houses that were empty and his nerves were on edge as he told the soldiers to keep on their toes. He had read the report of the fiasco that happened to General Louie Boudreaux and the company of men and women he tried to enter on the eastern border. That gave him the creeps on this mission. He had his Tank and crew and 1 Humvee with 29 troops, in all there were only 35 of them and if the people rose up they could be dead fairly quickly. Captain Ritter, ordered him to take his tank and these men and make a penetration to the south and make their way to the state route 70 and then come back up to Farwell. His plan was sound and He and his men were to pinch the town from the southeast and they would penetrate from there towards Lubbock on the 70 once Farwell was cleaned. That meant that it would be burned to the ground and anyone that wasn’t killed outright would be rounded up and shot. The orders were clear from the Emperor to kill the Texans where ever they went. Anton didn’t exactly agree with that genocidal action but he couldn’t do anything to stop it. The troops had set the farm house on fire and they were moving eastward on the road when the Humvee in front of the tank exploded in a giant fireball and He saw at least 5 men fly backward from the explosion.

Milo Hanson had gathered his son Mathew and 4 of his best ranch hands and taken his two LAV-25’s and drove toward Farwell. He had to come up from the south which was halfway between Farwell and Lubbock. One of his LAV’s had the SRM-30 anti tank missiles mounted and the other had the 25mm chain gun. He had been told by Kirk Roberts that the Emperors soldiers had at least two tanks and two choppers and it looked like they could be building up their troops to a full company maybe more. Milo had heard about the buildup up on the I-40 border fort also. He knew about the rangers south of him on the border and that fort down there. It had finally come to the war of the Emperor trying to take back Texas. The threats had been building for a few years now and in light of that the whole people of Texas were on alert it seemed almost constantly. Today he sat in the heavy thick cottonwoods that surrounded the Petrovski Farm house. He and Mathew and Nathan Warren sat in the LAV with the chain gun while Tom Mohn, Bill Jessie, and Pat Wyatt sat in the other LAV with the SRM-30 at the far end of the house. All of the farmers from down the road and the Petrovski’s had placed themselves around the buildings and trees. Two of the Petrovski boys had climbed into the big cottonwoods and were relaying INTEL about the tank, the Hummer and the small platoon of men that were walking along around the vehicles.

The Carlson farm house had just been torched and Greg and his wife Debra along with their two children, Mike and Barbara, were in the Barn with the Petrovski’s. Everybody was armed including the children who knew how to use a weapon quite accurately. Milo had signaled to Tom to ready the SRM’s, while he had Nathan and Mathew load the chain gun and set the sights on the Humvee in front of the tank. County road 88 was about to be in an altercation of epic proportions. The timing of firing was going to be close and if that damn tank got off a round, no telling what it would destroy. The Tank and Humvee with the soldiers had crossed the border yesterday and made slow progress to this point. Everybody had been warned within a 20 mile diameter and were hiding and waiting for this bunch to get to the right spot before attacking them. Milo and his LAV’s just happen to show up and it was fortunate. Milo watched the Tank roll out just after the Humvee and they all waited for the bunch of them to get close enough to not miss when they shot the missiles and the 25mm’s. Mathew caught the Humvee in his target focal and followed it until the right moment dinged on a quiet monitor of the target scope. Nathan fired the chain gun and as it was, the first round hit the Humvee dead on in the engine compartment and the second round caught the mini-gun turret on top. The third round sailed through the fireball and landed in the middle of the troops that were just starting to scatter.

Anton Lomax ducked from pure reflex from the first explosion and when the turret blew a piece of shrapnel caught him across his left shoulder, Through the melee of destruction he was yelling at Sergeant Hofstadter to target where that attack came from. Hofstadter tried to move his cannon barrel toward the target when the 5 SRM’s collided into the tank. Anton left his corporeal body instantly while the two inside the tank looked at each other just before their ordinance exploded in a small mushroom cloud. The complete turret and barrel blew upward and flew through the air, landing on a squad of the soldiers who screamed just before they expired. Five more missiles skimmed across the top of the tank that was now a big mass of fire and black smoke and landed in the road and field behind the conflagration. The explosions took out 10 more of the soldiers. The rest of the soldiers were running in different directions trying to find some kind of cover.

Milo and the others at the Petrovski farm watched the fireballs and smoke roil into the sky and waited anxiously to see who might still be alive at the site. Milo pulled out a bull horn and spoke to whoever might be out there. He knew there were still some soldiers alive and he meant to give them a chance to stay alive. “WHOEVER IS LEFT OUT THERE, THROW DOWN YOUR WEAPONS AND SURRENDER. WE WILL TAKE YOU BACK TO THE BORDER.” The people in the barn and the house came out and moved to a point behind the LAV’s.

Master Sergeant Jarrod Lock leaned against the drain ditch bank that was next to the road. His side burned like hell. He had been hit with shrapnel when the Humvee blew up. It had actually knocked him into the ditch. He was in water up to his waist and his hearing was still muffled from the explosion. He knew the tank was demolished and the Lieutenant was dead. This damn mission was a wasted endeavor. He wasn’t sure how many of his men were still alive. There were 5 of them lying in the ditch and on the field that he could see and it was a sure bet they were dead. He started to crawl up the bank when three of his men scrambled over the edge and slid into the water. He looked at Corporal Jensen and asked “how many of us are left?” Jensen looked at him through a haze. His eyes had been flashed when the tank exploded, he was lucky to have fallen away from the side where the Turret landed. He had lain on the road until everything went quiet and finally rolled away from the conflagration and over the edge of the road into the drain ditch. “I don’t know Sergeant, I was blown back when the Humvee exploded and then the tank blew its top. We lost three in the Humvee for sure and the Lieutenant and his crew are gone.” Jensen gazed around and counted the bodies lying in odd angles in the ditch and field. His mind was boggled and his eyes were still hazy along with his hearing. “Ain’t no telling how many others took it when the tank blew?”

Jarrod winched with pain and looked down at his side. His breath caught suddenly and he looked up with a daze in his eyes. Jensen looked at him and down at his side. The blood soaked shirt was ripped and he could see the piece of jagged metal sticking from the Sergeants side. “Damn Sergeant, we got to get that out of you or you’ll die.” Private’s Hoshkist and Killdare who had come over the bank with Corporal Jensen, were both almost deaf from the explosions. As they lay against the bank and breathed heavily the ditch water soaked their cloths. Hoshkist had blood running down the side of his face from what could be a head wound. Killdare was looking up at the sky as if he could not see anything. Hoshkist shook him and Killdare fell over into the water. Hoshkist grabbed at him and pulled him back up and laid him against the bank. He then turned to the Corporal and said “I think there are some men down the road toward that farm house we set fire to. They may have run that way when the world exploded.” Corporal Jensen moved around Hoshkist and looked at Killdare. The man was not breathing. Jensen reached over and slapped the man’s face but there was no response. He grabbed the man as he slid down and tried to prop him back up and that is when he felt the wetness on the man’s back. He rolled him over and sure enough his entire back was caked in blood. He realized the man was dead and stepped around him to look down the ditch toward the farm house that was burning in the front area. He saw the small group of men wading their way toward the farm. They all seemed to be armed and he knew they were heading for a safe place back at the farm.

Jensen clawed his way to the top of the bank and peered over. All he could see was the fiery mass of metal and black smoke and the dead bodies lying around. He looked back at the soldiers making their way to the burning farm and down at the Sergeant who was trying to stand up in the water. He watched Private Hoshkist wade over and take a hold of the sergeant. He turned back to the road and his mind flooded with Sergeant Lock’s words just the day before. The Sergeant had cursed to the Lieutenant about this death mission and told him that they should stay in Texico and enter with the main force. The argument was heated but in the end the lieutenant told Lock that he would shoot him if he didn’t follow the order. He was looking in the road and saw two rifles lying close to each other. He decided to crawl over and fetch them and did so as Hoshkist helped the Sergeant wade down the ditch toward the farm. Jensen grabbed the rifles and crawled back over the bank. He slung one rifle over his shoulder and gave the other one to Hoshkist. As they semi-drug the Sergeant toward the farm they heard the voice over the bull horn telling them to surrender and they would be escorted back to the border. He didn’t know if the others ahead of him could hear that order but he kept moving with the sergeant and Hoshkist.

Sergeant Billy Sanderson waded through the ditch in front of the 7 men that had made it to the ditch after the explosions. He had witnessed most of the platoon die in those first few explosions. He was in the rear of the platoon behind the tank when the Humvee blew. The squads around the Hummer and the tank took the explosion force head on and he watched in slow motion as the men were blown into the air and backwards. The explosion of the tank was almost simultaneous with the Hummer and the men around it had no chance to disperse. He saw the tank turret lift off the chassis of the tank and flip over in the air and land on an entire squad of men. He was cursing as he ran for the side of the road with his squad. The second round of missiles skimmed over the tank chassis and made contact on the road and the field. He lost 4 of his squad when that happened. Through the conflagration he jumped into the ditch that was a good 10’ below the road surface. When the shelling had stopped he looked up to see 7 of his men lying in the water and on the bank. His mind was foggy but he took count and looked at the farm house that they had set on fire not 40 minutes earlier. It was aflame with black smoke roiling skyward. Thank God they hadn’t torched all the buildings and he began to move down the ditch toward that farm. There they could at least have some cover and make a stand. The men followed him and they made their way along the ditch. They were within a hundred yards when they heard the voice telling them to surrender.

Milo had spoken twice into the bull horn and he couldn’t see any movement. The tank and Hummer were burning with flame and black smoke so it was hard to see if anyone was moving beyond them. The Carlson’s and Petrovski’s were standing ready around the LAV’s and Greg was cursing because his house was burning and he couldn’t get there to put it out. Milo did not want to move until he could be at least reasonably sure the good people would not be shot by these rogue minions of the Emperor’s Army. Neither he nor any of his people had any idea how many of them might have been killed with the initial attack. They had counted at least 20 or more men walking along with the tank and Hummer but they couldn’t be sure how many were in those vehicles. Milo knew that the Tank usually had a compliment of three and the Hummer could have anywhere from two to eight people in it. He spoke to Tom and the people that had gathered around the LAV’s and told them to stay close to the vehicles as he and Tom moved out. “We are going to drive over to that mess and see if there are any survivors. We will have to take them back to the border and release them if they surrender but if they give us resistance and try to shoot anyone, you all know what to do. So stay alert and pay attention to that ditch, they could be hiding in it.” He told Mathew to roll out slowly and keep the 25 pointed at the fires. He motioned to Tom and they began to drive to the road and turn toward the burning vehicles. He had primed his .50 cal heavy machine gun and was looking wearily at the menagerie in front of him as they drove slowly toward it. He looked at his chronometer and then at the sun that was getting low in the West. He did not want to confront these soldiers in the dark so time was of essence now. It was 17:35 hours on this 6th day of May and He needed to get up to Farwell before the Emperor’s soldiers came through that wall. He did not know how many tanks might come through but this one that was burning was not going to be one of them. He had already entered into this damn invasion and the Emperor’s soldiers apparently had decided to come in already so the conflict of Farwell could already be underway.

Sergeant Sanderson hurried across the front yard of the burning farm house and led his men to the small barn that was located another 200 feet to the west and north of the house. The eight men made their way in a jittery movement as they made sure there was no one to confront them. Private Lance Kristhoff had been looking behind as they made their way toward the barn and saw the three men coming down the drain ditch. He called to the Sergeant and told him that three more of the men were trying to get here and maybe they should wait for them to provide cover. Sanderson took his binoculars out and saw Sergeant Lock and Corporal Jensen along with Private Hoshkist painstakingly moving along the ditch coming toward them. He scoped out the wreckage and thought he saw some movement at the farm that was further to the east. He could see that the Sergeant was having a hard time at moving so his next move was to tell Private Kristhoff and Private Yinder to go out and help them to get here and hurry. “I think there are people coming from that farm up there and you damn well bet they are armed. We need to get into that building and we will have to make our stand there.” The two Private’s ran out and hurried along the ditch until they met up with the three men and all five of them were soon in the yard and heading for the barn. They drug Sergeant Lock to a spot in one of the empty stalls and lay him down. The man did not look well at all and the hunk of steel sticking from his side gave everyone the impression that this man was not going to be around much longer. Private Yinder told Sergeant Sanderson that he saw two armored vehicles moving slowly down the road toward the wreaks and it looked like there could be a bunch of people following them. Sanderson just looked tired and told two men to find a place where they could see what was happening and keep them posted. “Those armored vehicles may have the big guns that took out the Tank and the Hummer and if that be the case we are not safe here. We may have to run and if that happens we won’t be able to take Sergeant Lock with us, you men understand?” They all silently agreed and made sure their weapons were hot.

Sergeant Sanderson found a ladder to the loft of this barn and climbed up. He could see out the front of the barn but he could not see the road clearly due to the fire and smoke of the farm house. He was thinking that this was not going to be a good day for him and the men that had survived the destruction of their armor support. Out of 35 men including the officer and the tank crew as well as the Hummer crew there were only 11 of them left or so he thought. If there were any others they would be captured or worse they where injured and of no help. Looking to the east as best he could he saw the two armored vehicles through the smoke of the burning house as they slowly drove toward the destruction of the tank and Hummer? Looking through his binoculars he could see the dead bodies of his platoon lying around the burning remains of the armor. The two armored vehicles driving up looked like the old LAV’s that were outdated. He shook his head and thought about those vehicles and how deadly they were before becoming outdated and replaced with the new troop vehicles that carried the same type of weapons but had the microwave and sound transmitters that eventually also became obsolete. As he mulled over this in his head the two armored vehicles had stopped at the wrecks and through the smoke he could see the people moving around and bending over the dead on the road. He knew that when they were done with that they would be coming this way and he wasn’t ready to die today. His thoughts brought to many deaths into his mind and there was enough killing here today. He wasn’t sure about the men that came here but he was ready to surrender to these Texans and they did say that he and his men would be taken back to the border. That baffled him and actually gave him pause to want to defect into Texas. He turned and moved to the ladder and went down to tell the men what he was going to do.

On the ground floor of the barn his men minus the two that were outside somewhere, were stacking hay bails against the barn doors. Billy knew that was not going to stop the vehicles but he moved to where the Master Sergeant was lying with two men that had some training in field triage. As he walked toward them he watched Corporal Dancing reach his hand to the sergeant’s face and close his eyes. He knew the sergeant had moved on from this life and as he approached the Corporal he quietly asked “is he dead Corporal?” Dancing looked up and said “yes sir, the shrapnel was too big and it cut him up pretty bad.” “Okay corporal, prepare him for travel, we are going back to the border this day if these Texans do what they said they would. Hopefully they won’t just outright kill us, which I believe they won’t.” He turned to his men and told Private Willaby to go and fetch the two that were outside. “Get them back inside and hurry.” Willaby left through the back doors and shortly all three men came back in through the rear. Sanderson had grouped the men together and waited for the three to join. Once they were all together he began to talk. “The way I see it, we aren’t going to get out of here alive if we try to fight. There is too many of them and they are nasty fighters when it comes to their home. My thought is to surrender and let them take us back to the border which we all heard them say they would. Once we are back in New Mexico we can go anyway we want. If any of you are still up to going back to that death camp at Texico you are more than welcome but know this, you could be shot for not accomplishing this ill gotten mission. Any of us that do not wish to serve that sick little bastard in Denver can go our own way and perhaps we will live to see this damn war and that emperor put an end to. I know there are patriot soldiers mounting a force against him so that is a choice. I for one am not going to die this day.”

Billy knew this was a crucial and scary moment for these men. They had seen their companions die today on the road to Lubbock Texas as it was dubbed by most of them. They were unsure about surrendering to a bunch of Texans that could just as well kill them all but they had heard the voice tell them that they would be taken back to the border. This moment, he had prepared for and his pistol was ready in its holster. He hoped that he would not have to use it but he was not willing to take a complete chance with these men yet. He had just told them in so many words that he was going to surrender and even desert from the Emperor’s army. He stood with his hand resting on the pistol handle why the men milled around and talked with each other. Finally Corporal Dancing and three of the Privates walked over and stood with him. Corporal Jensen was next and Private Hoshkist followed him. That left three men still standing by themselves. It was Private Nylint that spoke and said, “You men are all traitors to the Emperor and you will be hunted down and shot for your treachery.” Billy looked at the poor soul and could see that the other two were not sure yet as to which way they were going. He knew they didn’t want to die so he spoke to Nylint and said. “Private Nylint, you are free to go any way you want, If you want to go back to the Texico post, you can but you will be walking by yourself, I think the rest of us would like to live another day. If you are fortunate and tell Captain Ritter about us and what we did today he might let you live. You know how a real psychopath behaves and he is one of those. His goal tomorrow morning is to invade Farwell and kill all the people there if he can but I think he will not make it out of that town alive. So go and try to save your miserable little life. We won’t stop you but you had best be running right now before those Texans get here. Nylint seemed unsure and started to move. He brought his rifle up but Private Victor knocked it upward trying to disarm him, the rifle went off and hit Billy in the left arm as he drew his pistol and shot Nylint in the chest. Nylint jerked backward as he dropped his rifle and fell to the floor. The pistol round had penetrated his heart and he was dead before he hit the floor. The other two Privates that had stood with him looked at the other men and dropped their weapons. Billy had just been grazed but it burnt like hell. He asked the two if they were with them while he still held his pistol. Victor said he was in and Private Potter said he was in also. In the entire ruckus the men did not hear the armored vehicles pull up and then they heard the bull horn once again. “ALL RIGHT YOU MEN IN THE BARN, THROW OUT YOUR WEAPONS AND COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP.”

When Milo and Tom stopped their vehicles at the burning tank and Hummer the people came around them and began to check the dead soldiers. They found 5 of them that were still alive but hurt pretty bad, they began to triage them and the trucks were brought up from the farm. They loaded the soldiers into them and someone brought an old bus up. They cleaned the road as best they could of the dead bodies and thought to bury them later after they captured the rest of them at the Carlson farm. Milo and Tom drove around the burning hunks of metal and took some of the men and boys with them to stop the others that had ran off to the Carlson barn. They didn’t know what to expect but Milo and Tom both had manned the .50’s and when they pulled up to the barn they heard the shots from within. It was peculiar but Milo spoke to them again. Greg and his wife Debra had come along and now ran around the house to the big water tank that was sitting about 40 feet from the burning house. Some of the other farmers had followed also and were helping them. Greg grabbed the big hose from its reel and pulled it toward the house. Debra turned the water on and Greg began spraying the burning building with a fireman like hose. The house had not yet caught completely on fire but the front porch had already caved in and the front ground floor was the most on fire. The upper rear floor was still standing and Greg made sure he targeted the fire as best he could to keep it from totally engulfing the house. The drain ditch ran close to the water tank and the others were grabbing buckets of water from it and running to the building and tossing the water on it.

Milo and Tom watched the barn doors open and then the weapons being tossed out. The first man to come out was a sergeant and then 8 more men followed with their hands over their heads. The Sergeant walked up to the front of Milo’s LAV and spoke. “We are surrendering; you told us that you would take us back to the border. What will you do to us once we reach the border?” Milo looked down at the men and could see that some of them could use some medical care. Some of the men and boys that had followed behind the armored vehicles, that weren’t fighting the house fire surrounded the soldiers and held their guns on them as the weapons in the dirt were picked up and carried back into the barn. “Well Sergeant, it looks like some of your men could use some medical care and we can start with that. We have an old bus that is coming down the road as we speak and you all can ride in that back to the border. We will put you on the New Mexico side and you can go where you want or need to. We must hurry though because your commander is pushing to invade us up in Farwell and we will not let that happen, you understand?” Billy Sanderson heard this man and the passion he spoke with even though he knew the man would not hesitate to shoot them if they tried to harm anyone. His next words were a plea and question of a type. “Well sir, I can see you are a man of his word and we are very thankful. We are very sorry that we have come into your country and caused damage. We were following the orders of those that think this country should belong to them. It is known by us that there are many soldiers that are part of the Emperor’s Army, that have and are deserting and joining up with the Patriots. That is our thoughts as of this day. The bloodshed today is too much and there are two dead men inside the barn. May I ask what you plan to do with the dead up there on the road?”

Milo took pity for these men, he knew they were mostly forced to be part of the Emperor’s slaves so to speak and he did not want to kill any of them. It was unfortunate that he and the others had to kill the ones that died today, but it became a necessary and forced action. “We are going to bury them Sergeant and we did find 5 of your compatriots still alive and they are being treated. They are on one of the trucks as we speak and should be here along with the bus shortly. Will you let us tend to your wounds?” Billy turned to his men and told them to sit down. His arm hurt like hell and he knew some of the others had some open wounds. Once they set down the women who seemed to have bandages and medical supplies moved from the crowd of folks and some others fetched some pales of water. It wasn’t long before all the ones with injuries were cleaned and bandaged and the people moved back into the crowd. The Fire on the house had been extinguished but the damage to the front ground floor was pretty bad. Billy felt for the family and asked a hard question with a suggestion. He looked at Milo and first asked what his name might be. Milo could see a conflict in the soldier’s eyes and said his name was Milo. Billy then made his suggestion, “I and these others have decided to not be part of the Emperor’s army anymore and will be looking for a hideout or perhaps even join up with the Patriots army. We know we have done you all wrong this day and if you put us across the border we will have to find a way to keep from being shot by the madman up in Texico. We will not return to that place but if you and your people could see fit to keep us here for awhile until that thing passes we can help rebuild this farm house that we so recklessly tried to destroy and perhaps we could apply for citizenship in the Nation of Texas. I think those men that you found still alive may even agree with us and it is for sure they need to be taken care of until they can regain their abilities to function.”

Milo looked at the man and then looked at Tom. He did not want to drag these men back into a place that would most likely see them all killed from their own commanders. Greg and Debra were breaking up the burnt lumber of their house to make sure there wasn’t any fire left to start up again. He looked at them and new it was going to be tough for them to get this rebuilt and still try to maintain the farm. Fortunately the 3 barns they had could be set up for living quarters somewhat while the house was put back into some order. The children were strong and could handle the hardship. He looked back at the Sergeant and asked his name. “Billy Sanderson is my given name Milo and these men are willing to work. We all are willing to do that and you can keep your people around to watch us.” Milo knew he was going to have to leave soon. The Farwell business was on the horizon and he couldn’t afford to not be there. He climbed down from the LAV and walked to Billy and stuck out his hand. The two men shook and Milo asked him to come with him. Both men walked toward the farm house and approached Greg and Debra and the few others that were sifting the burned timbers. The porch had collapsed completely and the lower roof had fallen in. The house was going to have to be rebuilt on the front half. The two story structure was still standing but it would have to be examined for damage and repaired also.

“Greg, can we talk? I think you may have been blessed with some helping hands if you will have them?” Greg looked around Milo at the group of men standing close to the LAV’s and back at Milo. “What are you asking Milo? That we should let these men stay here, they are enemy soldiers for God sakes. They invaded our land and burned my house. God knows what they were going to do if we hadn’t stopped them.” Yes Greg they did that and now they are asking for forgiveness and some sort of asylum and willing to help you rebuild your house. The Sergeant has told me that 4 of his men used to be carpenters before being pulled into the army. They know how to build things so to speak and there are two of them that were raised on farms. So between their talents and your misfortune, you could get this place back up and running fairly quick. They don’t want anything more than a place to sleep and some food. Seems to me you can provide that pretty easy.” Debra had walked up and had listened to the conversation. Greg was angry and it was understandable. He had been ready to shoot these soldiers for burning his house.

Debra looked at the soldiers and thought about the wounded ones that had been hastily treated. In all there were only 14 of these men left from their original group. It seemed to her that these men did not want to come into Texas from the start. She could read peoples thoughts and had been able to do that since she had turned 16. Mike and Barbara had shown an aptitude to do the same thing. She had discovered their tricks when they were both just toddlers. She spoke to them now as they were shuffling through the burned out front of the house and asked them about keeping these men on their farm while they helped rebuild the house. Mike and Barbara were both just 16 and 15 and Barbara was the first to speak back to her mother. Mother I have searched into these men’s minds, I know you said that we should not do that but only in emergency situations, so I thought this might be one of those times. So when I looked into their minds I could see that they are sincere about not wanting to go back to the Emperor’s army. Sergeant Billy is sort of their leader and he has talked with them about staying and helping repair the damage that they were responsible for. We can make that old bunk house work for us until the house is repaired and then they could live in there. For right now they can stay in the front barn. I think these men are used to living in hard conditions. There are a number of them that really want to fix this mess. Debra had felt the same because she had done the same with these men. She just wasn’t sure about the wounded that the Petrovski’s had bandaged up and did their best to keep them from dying. Mike was next; I feel the same as Barbara mom but its dad that I am more worried about. You know how stubborn he can be. Debra looked at her husband, whom she loved dearly and said let me talk with your father. He is a good man and has a wonderful heart, we know he is hurting right now and yes he is very angry but that will pass as time proceeds. I think Milo was right in saying these men may be a blessing. You know how we lost our farm hands last year and it has been a struggle for us to keep up this farm, thank the Creator that the Petrovski’s and the Hunters have lent a hand even though they got their own farms to tend to. We could use some good farm hands right now and I think these men will work hard to fix our home. I don’t want to see anyone have to go and be a slave to that puny dictator that calls himself the Emperor. Why don’t you two go and introduce yourselves to those men and hopefully we can get this business solved. It is starting to get dark and we need to take stock of the kitchen which is still in tact, hopefully the food is not ruined from the smoke. Take these men around back to the big Barbeque and let’s get some dinner cooking.

Milo was waiting for Greg’s response or answer as he watched the two children walk to the soldiers. He could see them start introducing themselves and shaking hands. That made his heart calmer. The sky was loosing light now that the sun had set and he was worried that he would not make it up to Farwell before the other army invaded. Damn he thought, why do these people have to do this? He turned back to Greg to get a quick answer but Debra had taken her husband by the arm and was looking at him sternly, he thought. Greg finally turned to Milo and said, "we will keep the men here for now and you and Tom need to get up to Farwell." Billy Sanderson broke away from the group and hurried over to Milo. He shook his hand and said "Milo; you need to get up to Farwell before 5am. That is the Zero hour for the attack. This ill gotten mission was supposed to block the route 70 to keep anyone from escaping from the town while Captain Ritter shells the crap out of the town. He has two choppers at his disposal and 1 more tank and at least 70 troops." Milo was listening to the Sergeant tell him all of this and knew he needed to contact The Sheriff and the other two ranchers that were supposed to be bringing their LAV’s. Billy looked at Milo and said one more thing. "Milo, you could go up there by the way we came down. They won’t be expecting anyone to come that way at them and you might be able to blow that other tank before they do too much damage. Most of the men will be at the doors through the wall to rush in when the tank starts to shell the town." Milo took all this in and said. "Thanks Sergeant, you and your men take good care of these folks and your wounded will be taken care of by the Petrovski’s up the road. You might go and have a good talk with them about staying here under sanctuary. I think you and your men can help bury the others also. That Tank still has its chassis but the Hummer is gone so it might be good of you and your boys to help clean that mess up also." Milo had gotten as much INTEL from Billy before he bid Greg and Debra goodbye. Greg had finally come around somewhat and the Barn would be made into a barracks of somewhat along with the old Bunk house for the Carson’s. Milo gathered Tom and his men and they drove toward the border. He was going to take the sergeants advice and do the end run on that place. It would be scary to enter into New Mexico but this was war and he had to do what he could to try and save Farwell as best he could.

64 THE WALL AT FARWELL

The Moon had popped up around 20:23 hours and was only half full. It was enough to light the desert but the two LAV’s drove very slowly as they followed the Tank tracks that had been left by the platoon that had penetrated Texas the day before. The washes and boulders littered the landscape along with yucca, pine and oak trees. Milo and Tom had left the Farms and made their way to the border. They entered New Mexico around 19:45 hours and found the area where the tank and the Hummer had turned eastward from their southern travel. They had stopped for a quick meeting to get their attack plans firmed up and slowly moved northward toward the Texico army post. The Post was roughly 25 miles due North from their position and Milo knew it was going to take a good 3 hours at their rate of travel. He did not want any unwanted attention. He planned to get within at least a mile and hopefully there would be good cover for both of them. Tom needed to get the SRM’s within a mile before they could be accurate and the closer the better. Billy did not know where the Tank would be before it began its shelling and that was the unknown that they had to deal with. All they knew was that the attack was supposed to begin around 0500 hours.

Ollie Hargrove had relieved Walt Peterson on the old Cell tower around midnight and the one tank that they could see had moved out onto route 60 and was still sitting there with its barrel pointed toward the wall and Farwell. The time was 04:00 hours on the 7th of May. The air was still chilly so Ollie had brought his coat and put it on. His infrared binoculars were quite handy at this time of day. The dawn had not come yet but he could see the tank clearly and the two choppers sitting on pads also. He had just poured himself another hot cup of coffee and had put his binoculars down while he did that. He took a sip of the hot coffee and picked up his binoculars once again and looked at the tank first. Something was odd about it so he studied it closer. Damn he thought the barrel had been raised since the last time he looked and he swore he was looking right down the throat of the damn beast now. He had been notified from Sheriff Roberts that Milo Hanson had called on the secure channel and told them that the Emperor’s army was going to attack around 0500 hours and to be on the alert. Roberts had told him to get off the tower by at least 04:30 and find some cover because that damn tank was going to fire its rounds into Farwell when they opened the doors and began their invasion. As he moved his binoculars to the chopper pads he got a jolt of adrenalin at what he saw. The ground crew or whatever were removing the big electric power cords from the birds and dragging them back toward the hangers. He kept watching and noticed his chronometer was reading 04:20. He saw the pilots come from the hanger and shuffle out to the choppers. He called Roberts and told him something was going down now and everyone should go hot because those damn choppers are getting ready to move. As he was saying this the rotors on the birds began to spin. This is it he thought and began to move toward the ladder as he told Roberts that the show was beginning. He climbed down the ladder about 10 when the first big boom sounded. A few seconds later the cell tower exploded and Ollie fell to his death from the 55’ distance he was still clinging to as the tower crumpled in on itself. The next boom rang out and the big 4 story grange building blew its side open as the second round exploded against it.

Sheriff Roberts was standing close to the wall and was ready to shoot whatever or whoever came through but the doors remained closed. Mica was standing close to a dumpster around 100 yards in front of the doors with Kenneth Lariby and his brother Robert. He had one of the RPG’s held at the ready while Kenneth had the other one. Robert had carried a backpack full of the rockets and also carried a box with some more. They were ready to fire on any vehicle that came through the doors first but they were not opening yet and the shelling from the tank had just lobbed two rounds into the city. The next one hit the old Courthouse and blew a sizable chunk out of the corner that started a fire in the building. The fourth round took out the big water tower and the fifth one rained down shrapnel as it exploded in the air.

Walt Peterson and his daughter both ran out of their house and hit the ground as the six round exploded in the main grocery store. Walt was yelling and said “THOSE BASTARDS ARE GOING TO SHELL US TO PIECES BEFORE THEY BRING THEIR TROOPS THROUGH THAT DAMN DOOR.” He stood up and looked for the cell tower but it was gone. He ran toward where it was and found Olli lying on the ground all broken up. Carla grabbed him and pulled him away to some cover. She could see the wall doors starting to open as she yelled at her dad, “HERE THEY COME, LOCK AND LOAD DAD AND GET UNDER COVER FOR GOD SAKES.” The doors opened and the first vehicle, Humvee came rushing through with its mini guns blazing away. The 20mm rounds began to tear the buildings into shreds until the missile from the first RPG connected on the engine compartment and lifted the vehicle into the air. It flipped and landed on its side and exploded as the ordinance began to explode wildly. The second Humvee came rushing through and its mini guns ripped up some more buildings as it turned and made its way toward the south into the city. The people began shooting at it with their AR25’s and it raked some of them down. It managed to turn a corner and disappear between some buildings. Kenneth could see where it was heading and ran to the east to intercept it as it made its way back up a street. The Seventh round from the tank took out another building that was a hardware store. Kenneth ran around a small building and stood on the sidewalk as the Humvee came up the street. It was spraying 20mm rounds into the buildings on the east side as it made its way toward him. He fired the RPG missile and it connected on the side of the vehicle causing it to flip to its side. Kenneth had one missile he was carrying and reloaded. Two men were trying to escape as the second missile connected to the undercarriage and the Hummer exploded in a conflagration of fire and black oily smoke with 20mm rounds going off randomly. The two men that tried to escape were caught in the random rounds and downed.

Mica and Robert stood their ground and Mica waited for the next vehicle. When it came through it was blazing away but the Missile caught it in the windshield and blew the top off. No one survived that blast and then there were soldiers running through the open doors. The two Hummers that the sheriff had brought let loose with the .50’s and a bunch of the soldiers went down before they got smart and dove into cover. Mica told Robert to grab some cover as the explosions tore the wind from him. The men that were trying to get through had moved to the sides and began to step on the claymores that Martha had set. The road way was blocked with dead bodies and two Humvee’s that were on fire. The soldiers had stopped trying to get through at the moment. The shooting ceased also and Mica had a bad feeling. He suspected that damn tank was coming and that would be bad for all of them unless a miracle happened. He was worried about the choppers also.

Lieutenant Yopperd and co-pilot Sergeant Meansford took the first chopper to the North and was going to come back from that direction. Lieutenant Loins and his co-pilot Sergeant Blofeld Took their chopper to the south and were supposed to circle back up. One from the North and one from the south and strafe the city and let loose the missile’s at the same time was their goal. There was not going to be anything left of this rotten little city when they got done with it. They had both cloaked the choppers and activated the stealth gear. Yopperd had a wicked grin as he readied the mini guns and set the missiles at stand by.

To the south of the 60 on the New Mexico side, Milo drove his LAV up the long wash toward the highway. Tom was right next to him with the SRM equipped LAV. One of the LAV’s had broken down so they had to stop and make hurried repairs, Luckily they had spare parts that were carried including tires and the men knew every inch of these beasties as they called them. It had taken longer than they thought and when they were ready to move out they heard the booms of the tank’s 130mm cannon going off. Milo took off and Tom was right behind him. They were a little over 7 miles away from the post and pushed the LAV’s to stop that damn tank before it destroyed Farwell. He had hoped to reach the post before the choppers took to the air so he could take them out also. Now he was afraid that was not going to happen but they could take out the Tank and perhaps lay some waste to that post at the same time.

Kevin and Kristyl had left Houston a few hours before daylight and made their way toward Farwell. They had been contacted by Daniel and Theresa and told about the Snake fort and what their plans were and told about a place called Farwell that could be another entry point for the Emperor’s army. They said they had the snake fort situation under control but Farwell could use some help. So here they were. The dawn was just beginning when they flew over Lubbock and they both had a feeling that something was already happening along the border. The started seeing the flashes of explosions as they flew toward Farwell. Kristyl was tracking everything and she saw the two choppers lift off. One swooped around and banked into a southern flight while the other one took off toward the North. “There is some kind of heavy artillery firing from the New Mexico side and there are two armored vehicles coming up from the south toward that post. They don’t register with Emperor Signs so I am not sure who they might be but that chopper has spotted them I think. Shall we take it out first then?” Kevin was looking forward and said “yes let’s get it first then go after the other one.” Kristyl set the gear to read the cloaked birds signatures and said “There seems to be a lot of activity at the border also and if that is Farwell it is getting bombed at the moment.” Kevin just kept looking straight ahead and said “one thing at a time my love,” and with that he readied the mini guns and the missiles. “Hurry Kevin, that chopper is making a run at those armored vehicles.”

Lieutenant Loins banked his chopper into the west and back toward the South, He was going to have fun ripping a Texas City to shreds today. His psychopathic, sadistic ego relished the idea of killing a whole lot of people with his thumb and forefinger. Up in the sky they could see the dawn spreading toward them. The ground below them was still dark but by the time they came back up to strafe the city they would be able to see. He had to see the people die from the 30mm rounds. That was what made it all worth while to him. He was jolted from his reverie by his co-pilot. “What the hell is that” he said. “What are you talking about Blofeld?” “There are two vehicles down there and they are heading toward the post.” “Can you identify them?” The co-pilot fiddled with his gages for a few seconds and finally said “I don’t know what kind of vehicles they are but they are armored and they don’t show any Emperor sign.” Loins had over flown the vehicles so he had to make a wide bank to come back. “Well, looks like we get to use these guns over here first and we better not run out of ammo before we get to that city. Did you load the extra stuff like I asked?” “Yes sir we got plenty, maybe we should buzz them first to see what they are.” “No sergeant if they ain’t showing any Emperor sign then they are enemy and that is just fine with me. Set the target focal up for me I am going in. The focal swung around wildly at first and the picture through infrared showed to armored vehicles driving along. Loins could not identify the vehicles but it was sure he was going to blow them up. He decided to use a couple of his missiles. He was coming in low and flipped the cover for the button on the missiles. He just started to push when his corporeal life ended in a blazing glory.

Milo and Tom both heard the explosion behind them and as they turned the flaming chopper flew over the top of them and veered off to the west as it crashed into the desert floor. The thing exploded into a huge ball of fire as it hit the ground. Milo was in communication with Tom and told him to keep going, “Looks like we may have a guardian angle.” They came up to the highway and jumped onto it and the drivers swerved the vehicles to be heading toward the tank which was only a few hundred yards in front of them. The LAV’s come to a stop and readied their weapons. Milo had his boys fire the Chain gun first and it rocked the tank. Three rounds fired and the third one blew the right track apart. The tank was swinging its turret around to line up with them when the flurry of 5 SRM’s flew into it. The explosion was spectacular as the turret lifted off the chassis and landed sideways then the whole thing went up in a giant fireball. Milo was already moving toward the buildings of the post and had Mathew and Nathan firing the Chain gun as they drove through the chain link fence that surrounded the post. Tom and his crew followed and stopped once they were through the broken down fence.

Captain Jon Ritter had watched the tank fire its cannon at the town of Farwell. He was pleased to see the fire balls and smoke rising on the other side of the wall. He finally gave the order to open the doors and attack. He was upset that Lieutenant Lomax had not reported in yet. He was counting on his tank blocking the state route to Lubbock and firing from the south to burn this damn city off the map. The conflagration that was happening at the wall now was not supposed to happen and he was getting ready to go there and direct the attack. He wasn’t hearing from anyone and it frustrated him all to hell. He heard the explosions that did not sound like the tank firing and hurried into the west room. Looking out the window he saw the fire brand fall from the sky first and was confused for a moment until he realized it was one of the choppers. He swore heavily and then the tank went up in two explosions. All he could think was they were being attacked but by who. He turned and ran to the outer office to call on the radio. When he picked it up he could hear loud voices and weapon discharges. This was not supposed to be happening was all that ran through his brain and then the room exploded around him. He fell to the floor and covered himself as debris fell on him. He scrambled up and began to crawl toward the door when the next explosion brought the ceiling down on him. He was flattened against the floor and tried to breathe as he rolled over and pushed the ceiling panels off of him. He managed to get to his knees again but the next Explosion brought the entire roof down on him and the flames burst through the timber and other building components. He was trapped under a rather large beam when the gas leak exploded and the building became a whirl wind of tiny splinters that intermingled with his corporeal body as it lost its cohesion to solidity.

Outside the buildings that were now burning and lying in piles, Milo and Tom had made sure that the post was destroyed. They rolled off the burning piles of buildings onto Wheeler Ave and were pointed directly at the open doors of the wall. They could see the burning Humvee’s and the men running around on this side of the wall trying to find cover. Milo talked to Tom and asked him how may missiles he still had in the pipes. Tom called back and said he still had 15 left. Milo then asked Nathan how many 25mm rounds they had left and Nathan said “we still have around 20 Milo.” Milo said “Good, let’s punch holes in that damn wall then, it is time to take it down. He Told Tom to fire at the wall on either side of the doors and he would blow the doors off their hinges when they got closer.

On the far side of the wall about 1 mile into Texas, two LAV’s came to a stop and watched the fireballs and fires burning in Farwell. Lance Bernett and Dan Blocker had finally reached their destination but almost too late. Lance picked up the radio phone and called Sheriff Roberts. The cacophony on the other end of the line made him pull the phone away. They could hear the weapons fire and the explosions from their position but the phone was loud and no one was talking until he heard Milo speaking. “Lance, is that you? Where are you and is Dan with you?” Lance spoke back, “Yes this is me and Dan is here also, we just got in and are about a mile from the wall and town. What the hell is happening down there?” Milo told him that they were on the New Mexico side and had destroyed two tanks and someone took out one of the choppers. “Be careful because there is still one of those nasty things flying around somewhere. The folks in Farwell are fighting for their lives as we speak and Tom and I are going to try and bring down that damn wall from this side. We may have to fight the troops on this side, I don’t think they know we are here yet but as soon as we start firing they are going to figure it out. What can you two do to blast that wall?”

Lieutenant Fred Yopperd flew his chopper to the north and banked into the East as the dawn was casting the light along the horizon. The chopper crossed the border and he flew it about 5 miles into Texas. His heart was thumping faster at the thought of strafing the town and blasting the buildings with his SRM’s He had taken the chopper 20 miles north before he banked it into Texas and now that he was 5 miles into the damn state he banked it in a long arc toward the south and began to drop down into his strafing run. He was going to use the 30mm mini guns for his first run and then come back and fire the SRM’s. He wanted people running everywhere so he could wipe them like a giant hand creating a clean path across a dirty table. Loins’ was going to do the same thing coming from the south and they were going to mow the lawn so to speak back and forth until the entire city had been cut clean. He laughed out loud at this thought and his co-pilot looked at him suddenly. Fred saw the questionable face of his co-pilot and said “what’s the question Meansford?” Henry Meansford just looked at his pilot and said “nothing sir, we will be over the target in 5 minutes.” “Good, good, we are going to burn this city and then we are going to Lubbock and join the others that are coming from Amarillo and that stupid No nuke fort down south.”

Kevin and Kristyl had blown the chopper out of the air before it had a chance to fire on the two armored vehicles that were heading toward the Army post. Kristyl said there was another chopper and it was heading north. Kevin took a path over the melee at the wall and shot straight east and banked back to the north and caught the chopper as it was loosing altitude and making a straight southern course toward the city that was burning in various places. He brought their chopper in over the top of the enemy chopper and followed it for a few minutes and backed off until he could angle the bird at the enemy bird. He meant to fire the missiles at it but it was too close to the city now and he didn’t want to have it fall into the city on fire. They flew up and behind the bird as it began a strafe run into the city and watched as it let loose a burst of 30mm rounds into the buildings. It came up on the south side of the city and Kevin let his missiles loose and they traveled into the bird as it was starting to make a turn. The enemy bird exploded in a fireball and dropped straight to the ground. There was only empty land where it hit and a secondary explosion caused it to become a small mushroom of fire and smoke.

Mica had grabbed Robert and scurried behind the Dumpster. He asked Robert what happened to Kenneth and Robert did not know. Mica had watched the soldiers get blown into the air as they stepped on the claymores that Martha had planted and he watched them get mowed down by the sheriff deputies .50 cal’s that were mounted on the Hummers that had parked behind some small buildings. The shooting had stopped and the soldiers stopped coming through the open doors in the wall. The fires were burning from the two Humvee’s that were blocking the road way. He had seen the one enemy Hummer run through and turn south into the town. He also heard the damn thing unloading its mini gun and then a large explosion and the mini gun stopped then another explosion and it went quiet. Somewhere on the other side of the wall there were a number of explosions and he could swear he heard the clear identifying sound of a chain gun being pumped out. The fires were burning at the wall and in the town and there were a few pop pops of rifles coming from somewhere. The initial cacophony had made him go deaf and when it seemed to cease his hearing registered a false quiet.

He was looking for Kenneth when the unmistakable sound of mini guns made him duck down. He saw Robert try to crawl under the dumpster and then saw Kenneth run from a building toward them. He ran into the path of the mini gun rounds and went down. Mica knew it was one of the choppers that flew over with its cloaking device on. The 30mm rounds continued through the town toward the south and Mica jumped up and ran to Kenneth. He grabbed him and began to pull him off the street. The boy was bleeding badly from a wound in his side and one in his leg. Mica was surprised that the boy had not been blown to pieces by the 30mm rounds. He got him to the sidewalk under an awning and set him against the building wall. The boy was semi awake and his eyes were glazed over. Mica looked into his eyes and said “Kenneth, stay with me boy, stay with me.” Kenneth looked up at him and smiled with a grimace. He spoke in a quiet and broken voice. “I took…….out……the …….Hummer……that got…..into……town.” The explosion at the end of town shook the windows. Mica looked and just caught the explosion in the sky and then the next one was on the ground and its wave of concussion did blow out some of the windows. Mica wasn’t sure what had just exploded in the sky but his suspicion was it was one of the choppers.

On the Texico side of the wall the soldiers had backed away from the big open doors and regrouped behind the troop carriers and additional Humvee’s. The two Hummers that were on fire blocked the road way and the other vehicles could not get through easily. The soldiers that had tried to get through had been mowed down by who ever was on the other side with heavy machine guns and when the soldiers tried to move to the sides they had stepped on land mines and were blown into the air. At least 30 men had died in the rush and the men driving the Hummers had died. They had regrouped and Lieutenant Jacoby had called lieutenant Rieckman of the Tank crew that was shelling the town of Farwell. The static burned his ear and then there was nothing but dead air. He wanted the idiots to change their target to as close to the gate on the Texas side as possible. Trying to get through at the moment was like walking into a meat grinder. That damn commander, Captain Ritter didn’t have a clue on how ferocious The Texans could be when protecting their homeland. The idiot had sent 29 men and one of the tanks to make an end run around the town but there had been no word of where the force was. He tried to call the Choppers and tell them to strafe the doors of the wall so his men could get through but the dead air from them made him pause. Something was really strange. He could not contact either of the tanks and he couldn’t get the choppers. He threw the radio at the Corporal and rushed to his Hummer. He grabbed his driver, Sergeant Torrence and they drove toward the post.

Milo and Tom had blown up the buildings on the post and in the conflagration, Captain Ritter had been killed. They had just left the post and were driving toward the wall which was a good two miles from the post. The old state route 60 or Wheeler Street was partially empty and they could see the flames and smoke at the wall in the early morning sky. They witnessed the explosion on the other side in the air and could not see what happened as something fell behind the wall. Milo had talked with Tom and told him that they needed to spread out. Tom still had ten SRM’s in the tubes and five more that could be loaded so he said he was going to pull over and load them before they got down to the wall. Both of them knew there would be at least 70 soldiers and possibly 4 or 5 Hummers with the 20mm mini guns. Both men pulled the LAV’s over and Tom and his crew loaded the additional missiles into the tubes while Nathan and Mathew reloaded the Chain gun and Milo made sure the .50 was ready. Bill and Jessie were pushing the missiles into the tubes when the Hummer from the wall came roaring up the street. Milo was standing next to the .50 and watched the Hummer come to a stop about 100 yards from them. He didn’t know what the people were going to do that were in the vehicle until he saw a man standing in the turret. He yelled at Nathan to fire the chain gun at the vehicle while he pulled the trigger on the .50. Mathew had watched the Hummer come up the street also and told Nathan to target it. When it stopped the tenseness grew in both men. Nathan had the vehicle in his sights when Milo yelled at him to shoot the damn thing.

Lieutenant Jacoby was going to have some real heated words with the idiot that was supposed to be in charge of this fiasco. He was quite heated that he could not contact the choppers or the tanks and when he tried the GQ there was nothing. It was just like the others, dead air. Sergeant Torrence was driving and they had gathered Sergeant Nick Grossenger to operate the mini gun. As they drove toward the Post, Jacoby saw the two armored vehicles sitting on the side of the road. “What the hell? Those aren’t ours, god I haven’t seen one of those for many years. They look like they were dragged from a museum or something.” He told Grossenger to man the turret and blow the dinosaurs off the road. “This is strange that these vehicles are here now, something is not right.” Jacoby was waiting for Grossenger to fire the mini gun when the front vehicle fired at them. The last thing he saw was the flash of the gun and his world exploded. Grossenger had just started to pull the trigger of the mini gun when the front of the Hummer exploded. He was thrown from the turret and hit the back end of the Hummer as it exploded in a secondary menagerie with the ammo on board. He rolled away as best he could and took a hit in his side of some very hot metal. He screamed as his side was cauterized and stopped moving. The lieutenant and the sergeant that was driving were instantly blown from their corporeal bodies. The Hummer had shattered from the first 25mm round and the second one caused the ammo on board to start going off. The vehicle then rose up and sat back down and was burning profusely.

Milo watched the vehicle go up in flames and was glad that the mini gun had not been fired. Tom and his crew finished loading the missiles and they both pulled out onto the road and began to drive toward the wall once again. Everyone was on extreme alert. They figured they would be entering the firing zone shortly. Milo told them to come to a stop within 400 yards and then they could pick the targets. “We are going to be shot at boys so stay on your toes.” They split apart and came to a halt at around 300 to 400 yards from the wall. The fires were still burning and they could see the Hummers parked with two troop carriers. There seemed to be men hanging around the vehicles waiting for something. Milo did not know how many soldiers were down there but he was not going to take any chances. They sat and watched while the boys had the Hummers in their sights. Milo figured that nothing was left behind them so they had the upper hand at the moment. He called to Lance Bernett and Dan Blocker to find out about what was happening on the other side of the wall. Both men reported that it seemed to be quiet at the moment. They had moved their LAV’s closer and had their sights on the doors. “Where’s the sheriff, we need to maybe get some negotiations going with these people. I sure am tired of killing them and I would bet they are tired of dying. We got them in a squeeze. They don’t know it yet but I can speak to them and tell them to throw down their weapons from this side it you can get the sheriff to do the same from that side.”

Sheriff Kirk Roberts was standing between his two Humvee’s looking at the carnage that lay in the open doors of the wall. The fire and black smoke still covered or blotted out the troops on the other side so no one was shooting from either side. He had seen Lance Bernett and Dan Blocker drive their LAV’s in closer and park them close to his Hummers. Roger Kohlasky and Henry Jaspers had come from the southern part of the city and told him that they had seen a chopper crash and blow up out on the empty field just south of the city. They did not know how it got shot or if it just fell from the sky by some accident. The strafing through Second Street was devastating and 10 good people had been killed. David Hinders had been one of them. The emergency med crews were moving around and treating anyone that might be injured. Walt Peterson and his daughter Carla had found Ollie Hargrove lying near the fallen Cell tower and he was dead. This business was beginning to make him very angry. A lot of good people had just been killed because some damn used car salesmen had managed to gain enough power to control the old United States. He would surely like to hang the bastard in the town square like they used to do in the two previous centuries. He was looking around for Martha who had disappeared with Mica and the two Lariby boys just before the big doors opened and this world became a screaming nightmare, when Dan Blocker walked up and said he had word from Milo Hanson who was on the other side and parked close to the soldiers at the wall. “He said the soldiers do not know he is there yet and both of his LAV’s are standing ready to either shoot them or take them as prisoners. He wants to know what you are going to do over here.” Kirk almost smiled. This could turn out to be a lot better than he thought. He had two armored vehicles and two Hummers with .50’s and he knew that at least one of the choppers had been downed. He was still not sure what had happened to the tank that was shelling them and the second one that was suppose to be over there had not made a sound. “Let’s go talk to Milo I need more information and how he got to be over there.”

“You telling me that you and Tom took out both those damn tanks and you saw one of the choppers crash and burn on that side?” “Yes sir that is what I am saying and we also took out that post that has been making itself a nuisance over here for the past 5 years. We also just took out another Hummer that was heading back there. I can see about 3 parked down at the wall but not sure how many more they may have. I think if we tell them that they no longer have any armor support they may want to quit this nonsense and leave. I got to tell you Kirk that I am tired of killing these people and we left some south of here that wanted to actually become Texans, if you can believe that.” “So how the hell did you come to be on that side Milo?” “We followed the tracks of the tank and the small platoon of men that tried to come in your back door and wound up in their backdoor instead. The commander of this fiasco was trying to sneak in and come up the 70 to hit you. Seems that most of those men really didn’t want to invade us and come to find out most of them that are still here probably feel the same way so we may have a good chance of having them leave before anyone else gets killed here today.” Kirk agreed with that and told Milo that he was going to speak to them from their side. “Be prepared, this may take some talking but I think we do have a chance.”

Polly Foresight had walked the streets with the other Medical personnel looking for wounded people to help. They had found the dead ones and covered them up for now. The triage mentality was in play at the moment and they did not know how many more they might fine that needed immediate help. She was only 16 but she had been trained in the triage and medical field since she was 13. She knew she wanted to be a doctor way back then and living this close to the border almost all the children had to take courses in medical training. She and Ginger Klassen were a team and had split from the larger team to walk the streets for any injured. They both carried their AR25’s because that is what they were trained with also, to protect themselves. Neither one ever wanted to shoot someone because the reality was they would rather save lives than take them. Second Street was the most destroyed although whatever was shelling from the other side had destroyed a number of buildings around the small city and they had found folks that were injured and needed care as best they could give before moving on. When they reached the North end of Second Street, Both girls walked toward the wall doors where the death toll could be very high. Polly was going to help whoever she would find and it didn’t matter what side they might be on to her. When they reached the closest building they found Mica and Robert and Kenneth.

Mica had stopped the bleeding from the wound on Kenneth’s side and his leg and had taken his t-shirt off and ripped it to create a pack on the side wound while using his belt to create a tourniquet for his leg. Both he and Robert were talking to Kenneth to keep him awake when Polly and Ginger found them. Polly immediately dropped next to Kenneth and opened her med kit. She pulled out a needle and vial and filled the needle with something and injected it into Kenneth’s arm. Her next move was to look into Kenneth’s eyes and then remove the quick patch that Milo had made for the side wound. She winched as she removed it and saw the open wound. She told Ginger to give her the swabs and began to swab his side. The wound looked like someone had taken a big knife and slashed the boy. She continued to swab the wound and looked at Mica. “How did he get this do you know?” Mica looked at the girl and said “he ran into the swarm of 30mm rounds that a chopper was firing. I think he was lucky that none of them actually hit him straight on or he would be dead. I think he was just grazed but that was enough to cut him open.” Polly just shook her head and asked Ginger to grab the sewing kit out and the big bottle of alcohol. Mica could see this girl knew what she was doing, she was working very fast and within seconds he thought, she had a big curved needle and some black looking thread tied to it. She took the bottle of alcohol and dumped it onto the wound. Kenneth hardly moved but did whimper a bit. Polly looked at him and at Mica again and said “don’t worry that shot I gave him was pure pain killer so he shouldn’t be feeling much at the moment.” She took the needle and began to sew the wound shut and shortly she had closed it with the thread and cut it off after tying it. Kenneth was looking at her as she did all this and said “Thank you Polly, I knew your training would come in real handy some day.” Polly smiled at him and said “you know Kenneth; I knew I would have to do something like this to you sooner or later. Now hush up.” She took a gauze pack from the bag and placed it over the wound and wrapped it around his waist and secured it. “Now let’s have a look at your leg, damn Kenneth you sure know how to make a gal feel wanted.” Mica was amused by this girl’s manner and he was amazed by her knowledge and quickness of dressing the wound. She did the same with the boys leg and quick enough her and the other young girl stood and said give him these when that shot starts to wear off and handed Mica a small vial of pills. Mica watched the two girls walk toward the sheriff’s Hummers.

On the New Mexico side of the wall, Master Sergeant Allen Haspert stood behind one of the three Humvee’s left to the company of soldiers that had come here to invade Texas. Actually there was a full platoon stationed here prior to the buildup to make a full company. He was in charge of two full platoons that had arrived two weeks earlier. Today had been the end of his career in the Army as far as he was concerned. This entire idiotic idea of the Emperor to attack Texas just to satisfy his over bloated ego had given Allen the last straw to hopefully get out. He was caught up in the operation before he could get out though and here he was in a situation where at least half of the company had been killed in a meat grinder. He knew there were two tanks and two choppers that were suppose to shell and strafe the other side of this wall but one of the tanks had been sent south and for some reason the second tank had shelled the town for only a short period before it went quiet and the choppers never really did what they were suppose to do. The first two Hummers that went through the open doors lay in burning heaps of metal blocking access for any others. The third one had made it through and disappeared. He had received no SITCOM or any word of that unit. Each one of those units had a four man compliment and they were gone.

That rotten Lieutenant Jacoby had taken one of the Humvee’s and two personnel and drove back toward the post. He was supposed to be in charge down here but he was worthless, the man had never been in combat. Allen had seen the explosion on the road toward the post and was baffled by it. Jacoby had sent the men through the wall right after the Hummers were blown to bits and they were mowed down by whatever the Texans had on the other side. He watched them move to the sides of the doors for cover and then the explosions began as they ran. They were stepping on mines for god’s sake. The ones that made it back found cover and were injured and shell shocked. That is when he knew this little foray was virtually over and to hell with those damn Generals and that piece of crap that called himself the Emperor. He was seriously thinking about jumping in one of the Hummers and grabbing a couple of the men and getting the hell out of there when he heard the loudspeaker from the Texas Side. Someone was telling them to surrender and saying they would not be harmed and they could be given medical attention for those that needed it. Allen was confused for a few minutes about that message then one came from behind them stating that they needed to lay down their weapons and surrender and that they were surrounded. That made no sense to him; he didn’t think the Texans would come into New Mexico. He looked through his binoculars toward the post and saw the two armored vehicles sitting about 400yards from them. He could see one with a cannon and the other one with a missile box. He turned to Sergeant Molar who was standing close by and told him that it was time to give up. Molar had been one of the fortunate ones that made it back from the rush through the doors of the wall and had his arm in a sling.

“How many men do we have left Sergeant?” Molar looked around at the men that were sitting and standing as if a bomb went off close to them. There were many that had field dressings on wounds that were sustained in their rush through the doors. Others had not yet taken that journey and were waiting anxiously for the next order, all of them afraid they would have to enter the meat grinder. “Maybe 40 Sergeant Haspert, we lost quite a few on that initial run through the wall. Those people on the other side are very ferocious. I don’t think we will ever get through that wall without dying.” Allen did his own looking at the sorry lot that seemed to be hanging off the vehicles and on the ground like so much blasted material after a detonation of a large bomb. “Do we have any that need serious medical attention?” “Yes sergeant, there are men over by the wall that can’t be moved. Those men will die if we don’t get them to a hospital soon.” “Do we know if there are any that may still be alive in the open door way?” “Not sure, we haven’t been able to move in there to see.” “Okay Molar, gather the men so we can tell them that we are surrendering. This death ground is over. I think Captain Ritter is dead and I know for sure that Jacoby is gone also. It looks like the Texans came in our back door instead and that could mean the Tank crew and those other men that went south never made it.” Sergeant Molar was glad in a way that this business was ending. He was worried what might happen to them now but at least they might have a chance to stay alive.

Milo had heard Kirk Roberts tell the soldiers to surrender and then he had done the same from this side and now he could see the white flag waving. Kirk called him and said they could see a white flag waving at the edge of the doors. It appeared that the Emperors soldiers had enough of this death wall and perhaps figured they were not going to win anything except their lives by surrendering. Kirk talked to him and said “we can see the white flag but I got to see the weapons being handed over or at least put in a pile where we can remove them, how about you Milo?” Milo told Kirk the same thing and he and Tom started to drive toward the wall where they could get closer. He told Tom to keep the .50 ready while he did the same and had Mathew and Nathan ready on the Chain gun. Milo heard Kirk say something to someone and then heard him say to move closer to the men and women of the Farwell side. He didn’t know what was happening but he sure was going to get down there and find out.

Polly and Ginger had stood around while Sheriff Roberts spoke into the megaphone and asked for the surrender. Polly could hear the Sheriff talking with someone that seemed to be on the New Mexico side. Her and Ginger could see the bodies of soldiers lying around on the roadway and to the sides. They both wanted to go and see if any were still alive and help them. The two Hummers were still burning but there didn’t seem to be any chance of more explosions from the now blackened hulks of metal. As Kirk continued to speak to Milo, a group of medical folks showed up from 2nd Street and joined Polly and Ginger. There were now 7 folks standing around with medic bags talking about helping the wounded in the roadway at the wall. They heard from someone at the wall if they could provide some medical help for their wounded. Peter Linstrum said “The hospital is on alert and has suffered no damage and we can take folks there is we can get the vehicles to carry them.” Kirk shook his head and spoke into his megaphone again. “We can send some medics in to help; do you have any transportation to take your wounded to the hospital?”

Allen had grabbed a megaphone from one of the Hummers and spoke back at the Sheriff. “Yes we have three vehicles we can carry the wounded in that can’t walk. We have disabled the mini-guns and have made a pile of our weapons so you can come in and get them. We have other men that are wounded but they can walk, how far is it to your hospital?” Kirk was unsure about this but Polly made it clear to him that she was going to help these men and perhaps women that needed medical assistance. “You can bring the Hummers and those two LAV’s if you want and the others with all the guns but we are going” and with that she turned and started walking toward the wall. Ginger hesitated for only a second or two and followed her. The others began to move also and Kirk threw up his hands and directed the Hummers to move slowly toward the wall. Lance Bernett and Dan Blocker decided to keep the LAV’s parked where they were for the time being. Their crew walked along with Sheriff Roberts. He still hadn’t heard from Martha but he did find out where Mica and the two boys were.

Henry was driving one of the Hummers and they could only get to the front of the burning vehicles before they had to stop. There were too many bodies lying in the road and they didn’t want to run over any of them. Henry jumped out and slung his rifle over his shoulder as he began to walk around. He had seen Martha come down here before the doors had opened but she never came back. He wanted to find her and it was not long before he did. She was propped up against the open door. One of the soldiers had propped her up before he expired or so that was what she would tell him latter. She had been shot through her side and had managed to stop the bleeding along with the dead soldier who had helped her. The soldier was only a boy and never knew anything about killing other people. Martha had crawled to him when he went down and together they had crawled to the door. The boy had helped her sit up against the door and stop her bleeding. She didn’t know what had knocked him down until he was done stopping her bleeding. He tried to stand at that point but instead fell over and rolled onto his back. He told her that he was sorry that this had to happen and looking into her eyes he asked her for forgiveness. She looked into his face and could see her own son who had died just 1 year prior from a horrible accident. She told him that he was forgiven and asked his name. The soldier child died before he could speak anymore. He had been shot through his mid section with a .50 caliber bullet and she didn’t know until he fell and rolled over.

Henry knelt beside her and said “Martha, I am so glad I found you, where are you hit baby?” She looked up at him and with tears in her eyes said “in my side but this young boy saved me Henry. He was shot and I didn’t even know where until he stopped my bleeding and then asked for forgiveness. My God Henry why do we have to kill each other, did we stop this horrible mess?” “Yes my love but there is a lot of dead and wounded folks and now we got to get them fixed up and clean up this damn mess. Martha couldn’t help herself and began to cry. “Henry, see if you can find any Identification on this boy, God he’s just a child.” Henry wanted to hold his love but checked the usual place for identification which was the standard dog tags that never went away. He pulled the tags and stuck them in his pocket and picked Martha up who winched from the pain in her side and carried her to the Humvee. He sat her inside and said he was going to drive her down to the hospital but she said “Find others first Henry there is more room and I am sure there are others who are going to need a ride.” Henry tried to argue but she shushed him and told him to get them and hurry.

Allen watched the two armored vehicles drive up and stop just 30 feet in front of him. He had never seen the vehicles before and wondered why the army never had them. The Man standing at the heavy machine gun looked at him and asked if he was the one in charge. Allen walked closer and looked at the man. “I am Master Sergeant Allen Haspert and I guess I would be the one left in charge of these men. May I ask who you might be?” Milo climbed down from the turret and walked up to the Sergeant. “I am Milo Hanson and I suppose we should meet up with Sheriff Roberts who is coming over here from the other side. We have a whole bunch of talking to do.” Allen agreed and showed Milo where the pile of weapons were and then noticed the people looking around at the bodies and helping some that appeared to be alive. He turned back to Milo and said “my god how does this kind of crap happen.” Milo did not say anything. He turned and waved at Tom to come over. Turning back to the Sergeant he said “can you get your men to help with the wounded and the dead. We need to get the road clear so we can get the vehicles through to get these boys to the hospital.

The soldiers began to remove the dead from the road surface and help place the ones that could not walk in the three Humvee’s. The vehicles were loaded and were able to get through and drive to the hospital in Farwell. Kirk showed up with his people and they all walked into Farwell to a big town hall. 42 soldiers stood and sat in the big hall while 20 Texans stood at the doors and around the soldiers. The Texans were all armed. Kirk, Milo, Tom, Henry, Walt and his daughter, The Mayor of Farwell and some other Texans sat at the front of the hall. The time was approaching 0900 hours on the 7th of May and the fires were being put out finally. The buildings that had taken the hits from the tank would be cleaned up later. The dead were being loaded in trucks and hauled to the big grave yard that was southeast of the city. Milo was talking to Kirk and Henry about what they were going to do with the soldiers. The mayor Kirsten McGreggor suggested that they let these men decide their own fate. She was going to give them a few options when the big doors opened and the President of Texas Sam Houston and two of his right hand men walked in along with two people that were dressed in military camouflage clothing. Everybody in the hall stood very quiet as the President made his way to the front. Sheriff Roberts stood and the others did also, as Sam approached and said “hello Kirk and Kirsten, it has been a while since we last talked with each other. I understand you have had a rough morning.”

Kirk shook hands with Sam and said “What brings you all the way over here Sam, don’t you have some important business at the capitol to deal with?” “Yes I always seem to have important business at the capitol Kirk but today there is some real important business right here. I know you all have been through a real nasty time this morning and you seem to have a platoon of men that might be handy for the nation of Texas at another place.” He turned and looked at the soldiers that were sitting in the benches. A good number of them had bandages on their heads and some had their arms in slings. He was silent as he looked at them. The hall was quiet, everybody heard the pin drop. Kirsten was the first to speak. “We were just about to give these men some options as to their fate Sam. We found it very distasteful to have to kill any of them this day but they came at us. We know they did most likely not want to do what they may have been ordered to do so we can’t hold it against them. However, they did surrender peacefully and no more life was taken on either side of which I am sorry to say there was too much taken before it all ended. We have a good 17 of them in the hospital being looked after at the moment and they will have to stay until they are able to move on their own.”

Sam looked at her and said “you know Kirsten; the good folk of Farwell did a rightful thing by electing you as their Mayor. I sure could use you down in Houston when you are done here.” He then turned and walked to the men that were sitting down. He looked right at Allen and said “Master Sergeant….Haspert is it? Are you the one that is in charge of the soldiers?” Allen stood up and saluted the man in front of him. “Yes sir, I seem to be the highest ranking left. May I ask what you intend to do with us?” Sam turned and looked at the woman and the man that had come in with him. Both of them nodded so Sam answered the man. “I believe Kirsten was going to give you a few choices, I will speak for her and if she has others she can ask you. First of all, do you men want to go back and be under the Emperor’s control?” He waited for an answer to that which would determine his next question. Allen turned to his men and Semi waited for a response. He wasn’t quite sure what the President of Texas was asking, but it seemed fairly straight forward. He finally said “how many of you want to go back and be slaves to the Emperor, you know we could be shot for loosing or not accomplishing this stupid mission.” Now he stood silent like the President was doing. Five of the men that were sitting in the back stood up and moved out of the benches and stood together. Corporal Lacky spoke for them. “You know this is treason Sergeant if you try to run or desert. You will be hunted down and shot. We would rather go and work for the Emperor. If these people will let us go we can make our way back to the main base.” Allen knew these men would tell the commanders of their where a bouts. His thought was to kill them at first so all the rest of them could get away clean but that thought did not set well with him. “Okay Corporal Lacky, I understand how you feel and think and I will not stop you and the others from running back if these people will let you go.”

Sam turned to Kristyl and Kevin with a question on his face. Kristyl knew what he was thinking and walked toward the 5 men. They watched her as she walked up to them. Lacky said “What the hell do you think you are going to do woman?” Kevin had walked over and stood at the rear of the men. They turned and looked at him and back at the woman and for some stupid reason thought they could overtake them and use them as hostages. Lacky, was the first to move and the first to disappear. The other four tried to rush her and Kevin and they were gone in a flash. Allen was surprised and the other men had stood up and were looking at the woman and the man as if they were some sort of god or sorcerer. Allen was the first to ask “where did they go, what did you do to them?” Kristyl answered him and said “don’t worry we sent them to a place where they will be welcomed, they will be with other soldiers. The men were baffled but asked no more questions about what they just saw happen.

The prison camp outside of Shanghai China held a few hundred American soldiers that were at one time conscripted into the Emperor of the US’s army. The soldiers had been captured toward the end of the large skirmish surrounding the City. It was late afternoon and the monsoonal rains were drenching the camp. The men had made flimsy covers out of any material they could find to at least stay somewhat dry. It was at the moment of the hardest downpour that 5 men materialized into a giant puddle of water. They were instantly drenched and looked around with fear in their eyes at the horrible conditions of where they suddenly found themselves. The men of the camp looked at them and went back to their struggles of surviving.

Sam waited for the room to settle down and asked his next question. “How many of your men in the hospital will feel the same way you do or those 5 that were returned.” Allen wasn’t real sure but he suspected that every one of those men that were in that hospital would most likely choose to not go back to the Emperor’s Army. He told the President what he thought and that seemed to satisfy the man. “So then, how would you men like to join the Texas National guard? That is an invitation since you all are trained soldiers. You can also choose to just become Texas Citizens but you will automatically be part of the people’s militia. You all know that we are under attack by that squirrel of a man that calls himself the Emperor and he will, more than likely try to enter this Nation somewhere else before this is over.” Sam looked at them waiting for their next answer. Allen had turned and stepped to the side and said to the President as he looked at his men. “I would be honored to serve in the Texas National Guard Mr. Houston if you will have a soldier that has fought on the wrong side.” One by one the men began to stand and walk up to Allen and give a vow to join the Texas National Guard. There were some, about 10 of them that asked to be given the citizenship and fight with the militia and asked where they could be of the most help.
