Two men or young boys as they were, waited for all the others to stand with Allan and the President and slowly stood off by themselves. Allen looked at them and knew they were medics or at least trained in battle field medicine and wondered what they were going to do. He also knew that they did not want to go back to the Emperor’s Army. Allen turned to the President first and then back to the boys and asked “what would you two like to do then?” Private Johnny Cruise and Private Steven Walker both looked embarrassed but Johnny spoke up. “Well sir, we would be honored as you say, and he looked at the President, to be Texas Citizens and we sure will fight along side any of the people of this country but we feel we owe the people of this town for invading and causing injury to anyone that lives here. We are both trained in medicine and figured we could best serve the Nation of Texas by staying here and serving these folks at the hospital that they so generously took our wounded to. We know the men and we could help with their recovery and we could help rebuild this town in the process.” It was Kirsten’s turn to speak. She came forward and stopped in front of them. To her they looked like high school kids. “What are your names if I may ask?” Johnny was first to tell her and then Steven spoke. “My name is Steven Walker and my brother is out their somewhere. We are the same age and I don’t know where he is. He was some of the first ones that came through the doors when they were opened. I would like to find him and help him if he is hurt.”

Kirsten could see the concern and compassion in these young men’s eyes. It made her sad that this business had to happen. “May I ask how old you two are?” Steven said he was 17 and his brother had just turned 18. Johnny said he was 18. Kirsten turned and looked at Sam and then back at the boys and said “I am glad that you two want to stay here and help and I welcome you both into our little town. Sam is going to swear you all into the Nation of Texas and you two can go down to the hospital and hopefully you will find your brother Steven. Sam gathered his men and they declared the group of men into Texas. He gave the rank of Sergeant Major to Allen and told the others that they would be given weapons and uniforms once they reached Dallas. The Ten men that would be joining the militia were given a choice of towns to go to from here and they were given a map up front by Sheriff Roberts. Carla took Steven and Johnny to the Hospital. Sam had been told about the Hummers and two troop carriers that had been brought in from the other side and He told Allen and his men to use them to get to Dallas. Provisions were made to make sure the men would not be mistaken for Emperor Soldiers. 4 of the men that wanted to just be citizens and part of the militia decided to stay in Farwell while the others made their choice to go to other towns where they could help against any more attacks from the Emperor’s army. Sam spent some time with Kirsten and Kirk and met with Milo and Tom and slapped Walt on the arm. It turned out that he and Walt knew each other from the past. Kevin and Kristyl enjoyed the time with the folks and then Sam said he had to get back to Houston. He had come with Kevin and Kristyl and they took him and his two men back.

Carla brought Steven and Johnny into the hospital and introduced them to folks as they made their way to the beds where the wounded were being treated. Steven and Johnny began to make their way around and becoming familiar with the wounded. Steven stood beside the bed of a woman that had been shot through her side and noticed a set of dog tags lying on the table tray next to the bed. He looked closer at the tags and picked them up then stopped. His eyes began to tear up and his arm was touched by the woman suddenly. He heard her say something but it did not register at first. He finally turned to her and looked into her eyes. He could see her shock at looking into his eyes. He heard the sharp intake of air from her. He did not know what she was doing at first and then asked if she was in pain. Martha was resting comfortably when the young man seemed to materialize beside her bed. She watched him pick up the dog tags and could see his eyes watering. She reached out and touched his arm. The boy seemed to be startled and looked at her. She drew a sharp breath as she looked into the boy’s eyes that had saved her on the road at the wall. The boy asked her if she was in pain. God she thought, his voice is the same. “Are you David Walker?” She asked. Steven dropped the dog tags back on the table and said “how do you know my brother? Is he alright?”

Martha eyes filled with water again. She was trying to figure out how to tell this boy that his brother was dead. He didn’t look any older than the boy that saved her. He could be a twin. She thought David was alive after all and everything was a dream. All of this passed before her eyes and then she blurted out, “your brother is dead.” Steven was frozen and then sat on the edge of the bed and put his face into his hands. He was silently crying. In a quiet voice he asked “how did he die?” Martha could reach him and put her hand on his arm. The pain in her side was returning and she needed another pain reliever. “He was shot coming through that damn wall, what is your name?” Steven looked up at her and his training kicked in. “You are in pain, let me help” and he stood up and grabbed the pills that were sitting on a shelf. He poured her a glass of water and handed her a couple of pills with the water. “My name is Steven, Steven Walker, David and I was forced into this war. We are both medics and were sent here to invade your country. Did you see him and talk to him before he died?” “Yes Steven I did talk to him. He saved my life on that road today. He was shot before he did that and managed to drag me off the road and stop the bleeding before he left. I am so sorry that all of this had to happen.” “What is your name?” “I am called Martha, least ways that is what Sheriff Roberts and Henry calls me.” “Well Martha I am glad that David saved your life, he was always one to help whoever he could, I don’t think he could ever shoot anyone and he may not have had a weapon today. I and another medic have become Texas citizens today by your President and most of the others that survived had been made citizens also. Johnny and I are going to stay in this town and help do what we can to heal the wounds that were caused.” Martha was becoming numb again and her eyes were beginning to flutter. “Steven, thank you and your brother. I think we are going to be great friends and you can tell me all about the young boy that saved my life.” She closed her eyes and Steven got up and began to make his rounds and talk to the soldiers that had survived a bloody fiasco that didn’t have to happen.

Master Sergeant Allen Haspert gathered his men and they climbed in two of the Hummers and one of the troop carriers’s and took the road to Lubbock on their way to Dallas. They were to meet with a Lieutenant Jackson at Lubbock and from there would be escorted to Dallas. It was determined that the wounded soldiers in the hospital would be given their choice when they were well enough to make a coherent decision. One of the Humvee’s had been left for Sheriff Roberts and his people. All three of them had been refitted with the mini’ guns and one of the Troop carriers was also left for the town. Mayor Kirsten McGreggor asked the militia citizens to stay on for awhile until they could repair the town somewhat and provide adequate transportation to the new citizens of Texas. Kevin and Kristyl took President Sam Houston and his two men back to Houston and decided to stay and help with the militias that were building toward the east. The North was also being built up in preparation for the push from Oklahoma which they all knew was coming. It was the morning of the 7th of May when Kevin dropped the chopper onto the pad at the Capitol and they began to set up the eastern and northern borders. Kristyl was worried about the other teams that were down in Mentone. There had been no word from that area as of yet.

On the Texico side of the wall the vehicles that had been blasted were cleaned off the road and left as reminders on the side of an insane Emperor. The military post was left to burn and no one bothered to put the fires out. The people of Texico banded together with the people of Farwell and tore down the doors from the wall to leave a wide passage representing unity between Texico and Farwell once again.

65 THE FAILED EXPERIMENT

Colonel Maximillian (Max) Hyman walked out of the big super mart with a large cart full of foods and other needs. His two companions, Lieutenant Frank young and Master Sergeant Louie Nubket had already gathered there supplies and were loading it into the big 5 ton truck that was one of the older troop carriers. Max wheeled his cart up to the back of the truck and asked “did you get everything?” Frank pulled the 100 lb bag of flour from his cart and hefted it up to Louie. “Yes Sir. The trailer is full and we can pick it up on our way back. We need to get the fuel tank trailer also. I think if we make two more runs we may be totally stocked.” Max started handing his contents to Frank and Louie. “I was thinking the same thing. We have a good store down below that we will begin to move back to the main station soon. It is good that the base was abandoned a few years back when the emperor took most of the personnel and sent them to China. We will have to block the access when we are done up here. The Emperor has begun his invasion into Texas and told me to stand by with the nukes.’ “You both know that when he shoots them this world is going to go to hell real fast. I am pretty sure that China and Russia have missiles and I can tell you that they will not hesitate to use them once the madman fires one off. The Emperor has told me that he will be moving to the base under DIA and give the command from there for us to let one go. He is bound and determined to destroy Houston and he thinks he will get Texas back. Jesus, the man is insane. What the hell is he thinking” I guess he will find out just how lonely it’s going to be when the world blows itself to hell. I think we are going to have to blow that damn tunnel where the Tram is resting. I don’t want that bastard coming up the tunnel.”

Frank handed a case of ammo to Louie that they had acquired at the local armory that was controlled by the small Military force that controlled a bank for the Emperor. They were the tax collectors for Kansas City. He looked at Max and shook his head. “We have the last two cars rigged with some high power explosives. When we set those off that tunnel is going to cave in and no one will get through unless they get a tunnel drill down there.” “Good that should give us at least 50 miles to the control bunker. Will there be any part of that Tram left?” “Well sir we expect at least half of it will be left and could be operative if we can get the main power back down there.” “Yeah well that ain’t going to happen until after the nuclear bombs stop falling and if there is any type of power left. You know this is why we have been storing the fuel. That big cavern where all the cans are is only half full. How much is on the trailer this time?” “We were able to fill both 100 gallon tanks and secure 15 more 5 gallon jerry cans.” “Good, be sure to add the amount to our records when we get back.”

Max moved to his Old gas powered Hummer and pulled out of the Super mart parking lot. Frank and Louie followed in the old Troop carrier. They drove down Kansas Avenue that turned into the Turner Diagonal Freeway until they connected to the Riverview Avenue. Once they got on that road they would drive west and make connection to N86th Street and cross the I-70 to get to Splitlog Ave. That particular road led them to an old farm house that had a rather large forest to the west. The entrance to the underground base was located about 500 yards to the west of the house and hidden very well in the trees. Max had a remote key system to open the big door in the side of a small rise. Once they were in the door would close and look like the side of the rise once again? No one lived in the farm house but it was kept up to appear that someone did live there. Max knew the caretaker and he lived in the closest house to the east. He had been paid very well to take care of the house. Inside the mound there was an elevator that could hold at least 4 trucks. The generator for all of this was encased within the mound and took its power source from the outside power lines that ran east and west. Max knew these would be shut down eventually and this place would cease to work for vehicles. The elevator dropped 200 feet straight down into the big carved out cavern where the base was located. The place was eerie without the personnel in it. All three of them had sworn that there was something else living down here and had been spooked more than once. They would not come here alone since the time they had been chased by something after the third time they had ventured from the control station to gather supplies. They never knew what it was but it had a ferocious screech to it and that echoed through out the base. The big steel doors that cut the tunnel off from the base were their only safety from whatever it was that lived in the base and their station that was located at least 100 miles to the west.

They had been in the Kansas City area for the last three days and today they were heading back to the Control station which they considered their home. The elevator dropped to the floor of the base and Max drove off the pad and moved straight for the tunnel doors. Frank and Louie drove the big truck off and moved to the trailers that were sitting close to the tunnel doors. Max had begun to back up to hitch one of the trailers to the Hummer. All three of them had their long guns at the ready. Max did not want to get out until Frank and Louie pulled up and backed the truck to the trailer. They would be pulling the fuel tank trailer. The drive to the control station would take them at least 3 hours. The road that ran next to the rail system had actually been paved and they could make good time. The Tram, when it ran would come into the big cavern and run in a circle and connect back to the main track for the return run to DIA. Frank and Louie both climbed out together. Frank would hitch the trailer while Louie kept watch. Max climbed out and hitched his trailer. They all climbed back into the vehicles and just before they started them they heard the screeching sound. Max used the remote and keyed in the numbers to open the tunnel doors as he was pulling out. Louie was looking to the side and through the mirror at the rear; the lighting in the big Tram cavern was a low level system that only shed enough light to see the immediate surroundings. The big doors had opened enough to let them through and Max was just disappearing through them while Frank was right behind when Louie saw a large shadow that looked like a bipedal being coming toward them from the rear. Louie yelled at Frank to get through, “HURRY WE GOT TO SHUT THE DOORS THAT THING IS COMING ACROSS THE ROTUNDA” Frank’s neck hairs raised and he used the radio to tell Max to close the doors. The doors were closing as Frank drove the truck through and they closed tight just as the trailer behind the truck passed through. Frank stopped and both men jumped out and turned their rifle mounted torches on the doors. They heard the bang against the doors but nothing moved. The banging continued for about 5 to 7 hits and then all went quiet. Both men looked at each other and climbed back into the truck and flashed their lights at Max up front and the caravan began to move toward the west.

The Creature/beast had been searching for his daily meal at the deeper area of the underground complex when it heard the sounds that it had heard before. They was coming from the big cavern. It had heard these sounds in the recent past and had arrived in the cavern only to find nothing. It followed the noise of something and moved to a large hole in the ceiling of the cavern. It could hear the sound of grinding but the hole was dark and it could not see anything. The sound stopped and after awhile it moved back toward the deeper area in search of its food. Hearing the sound again it moved toward the big cavern and watched the bipeds moving around and then the things got into some containers of a type and started to move. It smelled the food that was in the containers and started to rush toward them. A big hole opened in the wall and the containers disappeared into it. He almost reached them when the hole closed and he ran into the wall. It hurt but he tried to bash his way through it until he bled from his giant hands and his huge arms. He finally gave up and went back to his place where he rested. The food had begun to get scarcer and today he had thought he would find a good source of food. He slunk back into the deeper area and found his energy pad where he stepped into a harness and became still as the harness buzzed and silently fed an electrical circuit into his body.

The creature was the result of the first experiments performed by Hans Peterson and Gregor Mendal to create a biological android. They were experimenting with genetic material and how to improve the human body to be virtually indestructible. They had retrieved a homeless derelict from the streets of Kansas City. The man was quite oversized for a normal human and they wondered how the man had gotten so big. The man stood almost 7 foot in height and his body was proportionate to the height. The first thing they did was inject the man with the biological genetic material to see what kind of reaction it would have. Unfortunately the man died or so they thought. They both left for the DIA base to get the new lab systems set up and came back a few weeks later to see about gaining another human for continued experimentation. However, when they returned the commander told them that their first experiment had awakened three days after they left and began to morph. When they entered the lab they found the man had been placed into a cage and the soldiers were giving him dead rats and other creatures they could capture on the surface to eat. The man/creature had grown almost 2 feet in height and appeared to still be growing in height. The body had become bloated in the upper area and its legs and arms were growing in size and length. The head had distorted in a way that gave it an appearance of a gorilla and the teeth had also become longer and sharper. The hair had grown long from the head and the body appeared to be growing hair. It seemed that the Biological genetic concoctions they had introduced were taking over in an ever expanding way.

Peterson and Mendal knew they had the workings of making super soldiers that could be almost invincible in the combat zone; however they had to perfect the brain and the skin and the motor skill. They had the creature, as they called it at first, sedated and began to experiment further. Peterson had created the AI module that could be implanted in the brain to enhance the senses and be controlled for warfare. Mendal experimented with re-growth of the body parts and something to make the outer layer of skin almost steel like in nature. Both men decided to introduce bionic parts when Mendel’s re-growth didn’t work as expected however it did cause the skin to heal over from bullet holes or knife wounds in an unfathomable time period. They spent almost a year with the creature and finally added an electrical battery pack next to the things heart and designed a chamber where the creature could recharge the AI modules and the smaller highly sophisticated motors that operated the bionics. They were both called back to the DIA labs and were gone for a good month before returning. Upon their return they discovered their experiment had escaped and in so doing had killed 10 of the soldiers. It had disappeared into the deeper recesses of the base where there were caves and tunnels that had not been explored or remodeled to fit with the base. Not long after that the Emperor had ordered all the men from the base to ship out to the major conflict in China. Mendal and Peterson were called to other bases to experiment on humans and the KC base was abandoned and at the same time the tram was stopped. The creature had found small animals and rodents to eat and had even found a tunnel that lead upward and out to a large patch of trees. It terrorized the inhabitants that lived in the suburbs sometimes but always went back to its re-charging chamber. The creature had become almost 12 feet tall before its height stopped. Its body was massive and fortunately Peterson and Mendal had made the chamber extra large to accommodate the proposed growth of their experiment.

The Creature had deeper memories of when he was living in the sunshine where there were lots of other beings that moved around in containers and walked around him. He lived in the open and slept in places where others slept. He did not know where this place was that he dreamed about while he slept in the chamber that fed hot current through his body. He would explore the deeper recesses of the caves and go to the surface place and that is when he would have the memories more vivid because the warmth of the light brought back the thoughts of a different time. He would find the food he needed and go back to the dark places and find his sleeping chamber where he would receive energy.

After the encounter with the other beings and their containers that moved like the ones in his memory, he found another tunnel area that he had not explored and found his way into a big tunnel that had some kind of lights along the sides of the tunnel. As he left the little tunnel to enter the bigger tunnel he discovered a smooth surface and to the side of it was another surface that had very hard narrow pieces of bars that were similar to the bars he had bent to escape from. As he felt these bars his memory flooded with a sound of rushing water and the thoughts came of a large moving container that made a loud noise and moved on these bars. This was a new tunnel for him to explore but he had to go back and sleep in his cage. After his energy had been recharged he went back to the big tunnel and looked for food. He began to find the small creatures that scurried along in front of him. As he moved deeper in the tunnel he caught the furry creatures and then he began to run out of energy. He turned to go back and fell next to the tunnel wall that had one of the lights shinning low to the floor of the tunnel. He could see the energy running through the light behind the cover. He weakly broke the cover and tore the bulb from its socket. He stuck one of his big fingers into the socket and felt the electrical energy. The power was low but it gave him some energy. He tore the inside back cover from the box and found the wiring system. His next move was to grab the exposed wires and let the electrical current flow through his entire body. He lay their for the amount of time that he usually stayed in his chamber while his body recharged. When he stood up there was a strong urge for him to continue walking in the tunnel away from where he had lived for so long. He moved to the west and when his body began to lose energy he would lay next to one of the lights and do as he had done with the first one. He did not know where he was or where he was going but he was being drawn further into the tunnel.

66 THE HOMELESS AND THE FARMERS

Alice had taken the lead while Tamara and Alisha followed behind by a few yards. They were levitating and flying about 5 feet above the rails of the Tram. The girls discovered that there were low lighting fixtures built into the sides of the tunnel and they continued to be illuminated even though the underground city building had been destroyed. Alice wondered where the power was coming from and she was sure they might find out sooner or later. They knew that the workers had escaped into this tunnel earlier and they were looking for them to lend a hand. The tunnel was surely a few hundred miles long or more. They were looking for the weapon or what Greybark had said was under the airport and through a long hole. This definitely seemed like the place. The spooky android things that wound up killing all the scientists and the soldiers would not be exactly what Greybark talked about but they were close. Tamara and Alisha both had talked about what their parents had encountered and destroyed in other places and now the Emperor’s private little army was gone and he would not be able to access the under ground city. They discussed the complete caving in of this tunnel once they found the weapon and destroyed it. Flying through the tunnel was easy but it was going to be a long flight they thought.

Carl Unsford was driving the lead forklift while Ammon Rivera drove the other one. Once they were in the tunnel they had deflated the tires on the fork lifts and got them on the tracks. They also discovered the low illuminating lights along the walls. That allowed them to conserve some of the energy the forklifts would use if they had to keep the lights on. They were 20 miles into the tunnel when they heard the distant boom sounds. None of them knew what the sounds might be but Carl said that they had to keep moving. They stopped when they reached a 25 mile marker and resituated everything in the trailers for better comfort. The forklift could only go at top speed of 15 mph and Ammon knew this tunnel was hundreds of miles long. They could be down here for weeks. Carl knew that there were access ladders to the surface somewhere along the route but he did not know how far apart they might be and it they would take some kind of key to open a hatchway. Jaclyn McKnight told them that she had seen some men climbing into a concrete tube that was above ground when she drove from Kansas City to Denver. She thought it was odd because she had taken a dirt road from the main Highway to camp for the night and came across two trucks in the middle of nowhere. She was frightened and was turning around when she noticed the men climbing into the cement shell. “It stood about 5 feet above the ground and was covered with brush so it could not be seen very easily. I think those men were going to an underground bunker or something. I did not see them come back out before I drove back to the highway.” They all knew that this tunnel was several hundred feet below the surface and when they found one of the access ladders they would have to climb a great distance before they reached the surface. That could be very hard for some of them. They resituated the trailers and continued moving on the tracks. Their food and water had to be rationed very carefully because they could die down here if they ran out and could not find a way out.

As the girls floated along they began to hear the quiet sounds of motors in front of them. They knew that the motors were coming from the Forklifts that the people had taken to escape from the factories they slaved in. The girls meant to send these people back to their homes or where they had originally been before being forced to work in the underground city. They would be given a choice and could be taken or sent anywhere they wished to be. The motor sounds were intermingled with a sound like rushing water. Alisha knew that sound from a past time of her existence. She had been bumped from a corporeal body by a train and the rushing water sound let her know that the forklifts were on the rails. The girls continued to fly toward the sounds and they began to get louder. The low level lighting could be seen faintly but 50 feet in front of them the tracks were dark. The road beside the rails was also dark. The rushing water sound stopped suddenly and the girls stopped moving. Tamara spoke quietly and said “they appeared to have stopped.” We should hurry up and catch them, they could be in trouble.” Alice was concentrating on a distant sound that could be heard now that the people in front of them had stopped. It sounded like vehicles of another type. The sound was an echo and was so quiet it was apparent that it was very far off. All three of them began to move once more.

Carl Unsford’s forklift started to sputter so he quickly sent word back to tell Ammon to shut down. Carl shut the tractor down and it rolled to a stop on the rails. As the tractors shut down and the noise of the wheels on the rails subsided, the people became very still and quiet. The distant sound of vehicles could be heard somewhere far in front of them. The tunnel only took about 5 turns in its entirety and those were wide arcs due to the speed of the tram when it traveled from DIA to the KC base. The tram only took about 1 hour to go from one place to another when it ran but at the present it would take anyone traveling in a vehicle that could move around 100 MPH at least a good 5 to 6 hours to make the trip one way. Carl listened to the sound and knew it was coming from a military vehicle of some type and that it was far off. The people began to talk amongst themselves as to what they were going to do if the military showed up. They knew the tram was parked somewhere down here but not exactly where. Ammon was worried and talked with Carl about their situation at this point. “If that is the military and they are coming from the other end, we will be caught and they could shoot us. How far off do you think they are from us?” “I don’t know Ammon, that sound could hundreds of miles away, you know how this tunnel can echo sound. We have two options from here. One is to find a ladder to the surface and get out before those vehicles reach us or we can hope to find that tram and scoot these tractors to the rear of it and hide inside and hope those people drive by and never notice the tractors. Either way we got to become obscure. I don’t know who that is but it’s a sure bet that they ain’t going to be friendly to us.”

Ammon listened to the people whispering loudly about being caught and killed and turned back to Carl. “What’s wrong with your tractor?” “I don’t know yet, it just started to sputter on me so we got to see what it is and if it can’t be fixed we are going to have to move it off the track and it ain’t going to be real comfortable with all 20 of us riding on that one tractor. We can pull both trailers but it is going to slow us down so we best be getting busy.” “Damn Carl if we find a ladder it is going to be one hell of climb to reach the surface. Get the hood open on that tractor and let’s get to it.” Both men opened the hood of the motor compartment while 4 others shined their torches on the motor. The motor was quite hot but that wasn’t unusual for one of these types of tractors. Carl did not want to touch the damn thing because he knew it would burn the skin right off of him. He pulled the gauge stick to check the oil and wiped it the first time stuck it back in. When he pulled it the second time and looked at it there was no oil on the stick. “Damnit, Ammon get some oil this thing is empty.” Ammon shook his head and reached into the tool and fluid compartment to get the oil. Carl flashed his torch at the track bed at the rear of the tractor and cursed to himself. There was a wet trail running back under the trailer. He jumped down from the tractor and walked to the rear of the trailer and sure enough there was the wet line running back and under Ammon’s tractor. Something had caused the oil plug or whatever to fall out of the oil pan on the motor. He started to go back when Manny Hofstadter spoke up. “What’s wrong with your lift Carl?” Carl stopped for just a moment and said “It’s out of oil so we are giving it a drink.” He continued to walk forward and Manny spoke again. “Yeah well how long you been driving it without oil, the damn thing was smoking a ways back and we could smell it and whatever is coming through the tunnel is heading right for us.”

Carl knew Manny was a pessimist and a trouble maker and he didn’t want to argue with the guy right at the moment. “Well Manny, we are fixing it and should be on our way shortly so just relax. Whatever is coming through the tunnel is hours away from us and we should be finding one of those ladders soon.” Manny continued “well I think we should turn around and go back, at least we had food and a place to sleep.” Carl was becoming irritated with Manny now and his voice was beginning to show it. “Listen Manny you heard the explosions or whatever back there, in fact you all heard them so something happened back there and it probably wasn’t good. For all we know the tunnel is blocked.” Manny wasn’t going to give up. “Well Mr. big shot, how about you listen. Whatever is coming is not going to be good for us and how do you know they are hours away. We all know the echo in these tunnels and they are deceiving at best but we are probably only about 50 miles from the factories and that is a hell of lot closer than wherever you think we are going. Yeah you say there is a ladder to the surface but damn I ain’t into climbing 200 feet on a damn ladder to get to the surface. I say we turn around and go back. We can deal with those soldiers, there can’t be more than ten or so and we can surprise them and get their weapons.” He had stood up in the trailer and was looking around at the others. The ones in the trailer in the rear had climbed out and walked forward and were standing around listening. Carl had seen them walk up as Manny spewed his dissent. Buzz Cirquet was the first to join with Manny and then two more spoke up and said they agreed with Manny.

Ammon had discovered the leak point in the oil pan and while the argument seemed to spiral upward. He managed to plug it and fill the pan with the extra quarts of oil. When he finished there were 6 people speaking Manny’s insanity of returning to the factories. He wiped his hands and walked back to stand with Carl. Carl hadn’t said anything back to Manny but now he did. “So you think going back is the best solution Manny and you other’ are you standing with Manny on this idea?” Manny looked at Ammon and asked “is that tractor operable or do we need to leave it?” Ammon looked at the trouble maker and said “I don’t know about you Manny but I ain’t leaving anything and we need to get moving right now so what you people going to do?” At that point Manny decided to take action, “Give me the keys for that rear tractor Ammon we are going to take it back and you and whoever else can go and meet whoever is coming from the other end.” Ammon had left the keys to the tractor he was driving in the ignition but he didn’t say anything as he looked at Carl. Carl spoke quickly and said “anyone wanting to go with Manny gather at the rear tractor right now and anyone wanting to go forward gather here.” Ammon finally spoke and told Manny the keys were in the ignition so Manny spun and hurriedly walked to the rear tractor. “Whoever is coming with me better get on board because I am getting out of here right now.”

Ammon walked back to his tractor and the trailer and grabbed his bag and stepped back as the others that were standing with Manny came and climbed into the trailer. Manny climbed onto the tractor and started it up. He shifted it into reverse and waited for everyone to get situated. In all including Manny there were 6 men and two women. Manny jammed the gear and stepped on the accelerator and the tractor began rolling backwards. Carl and the others watched them roll away and Carl asked everybody to get aboard and jumped on the tractor and turned the key. It took a few pumps and the motor turned over and a big puff of smoke blew out the smoke stack. The motor was running but sounded a bit rough as the 12 people rode eastward on the tracks.

The girls had come up on the people as they were arguing. They were invisible and waited as the one man seemed to be angry and then gathered the few that stood with him and started back Alice wanted to alert them but Tamara stopped her. Those men and women have made a choice and they will get one more before this is over. Let’s hope they make the right one and are able to escape. That man that has tricked them is destined to die down here. He was a traitor among the people and took favors from the soldiers to spy on the people. Before we cave this tunnel in completely we will see them one more time. Now we must give the others a way out and send them home. Tamara and Alice floated toward the tractor and trailer that was moving east at 15 mph. Alisha had floated ahead in the tunnel for many miles until she came across a ladder that was an escape route. She twisted into the no-time and materialized on the surface. The landmass was rolling with fields of wheat. She saw the cement cone and noticed the field had been plowed around it and planted that way. The farm house in the distance looked huge and she could see the grain silos and a big barn.

Garth Womack drove his big tractor with the plows over the rolling hills of his North 40 field. He was drinking his coffee and programming the tractor to makes its turns on the big field. His only son was doing the same in another tractor on the 40 acre field next to this one. He had 8 tractors at one time in the recent past. 6 of them sat idle in the big tractor barn now because the hired help he had for years had moved on due to no wages. Garth had slowly begun to loose the income to run this 2 section farm. His 1280 acres began to shrink in production because he couldn’t keep the fields plowed and planted without the help that moved on. He actually had two big 40 acre parcels that he ran his cows on and the food was drying up for them also. Out of 200 dairy cows he had already lost a good hundred of them to lack of food and care and a disease that supposedly had been cured at the turn of the century. How hoof and mouth got into his cows was a mystery but he suspected it was planted by the Limorish boys.

Chance Womack programmed his tractor to make its turns as usual and sat back in the chair. His Dad and he were the only ones driving and plowing now and it took a good week to plow 40 acres with just one tractor operating. He had just turned 17 and his Dad had dumped a whole lot more chores on him a year ago when the last farm hands had quit and moved on. This farm was going to die off like so many others had in the past 10 years. He argued with his Dad now more than ever about trying to keep it up. His first suggestions were to shut down one whole section and let it go to seed. That had taken a full year before his Dad finally agreed with him. His mother Elizabeth Womack and his Sister Cassie worked hard to keep the cows fed and milked but that was a loosing battle anymore. They all had to work 24/7 it seemed and still they were falling behind. The Emperor’s taxes on their land and foods were so unreasonable, they would never get ahead. He did not understand why this happened because everybody needed to eat but there were the bigger farms that played ball with the Emperor and his cronies and were rewarded. His Dad had told the Emperor to get lost over a number of demands from the State Farm bureau and so the harassments came in the most inconvenient times. Elizabeth and Cassie had been harassed and attacked many times from people that worked the big farm to their south. The City of Saint Francis was owned by the Emperor’s minions, and the big feed stores, Banks and just about all the places where anyone could buy farm equipment and necessities to operate their farms were controlled by Emperor Sympathizers or minions. The grain banks began to undercut the prices of the yields the Womack’s would harvest and that made it hard to purchase supplies to keep the farm going.

Chance remembered the fights at the school he would get into until he quit going. The farm hands were harassed when they were around and a couple of them were found dead. The police were controlled by the Emperor and never did anything unless it was to harass the family and other families that did not go along with the Emperor. Him and Cassie had both stopped going to the school and worked the farm now full time. Cassie had just turned 15 when she quit the school and that had been over a year ago. They hardly went to the city now and when they had to, it was always a problem for them. They had grown up here but the people they knew shunned them and the friends they had grown up with began to harass them also. Chance knew some other kids that lived toward the east on farms that suffered the same persecutions and they had to stay away from each other lest the ones in the city would attack them. Chance and Cassie both wanted to leave this place and find their way to a place where the people were friendlier. They had been to Wichita once and it was not a pleasant experience. It seemed that the people lived in pure fear. The gangs had taken over the City and the Police were using them to control the masses. They had also gone to Denver and that was even worse for them because that was the Emperor’s palace and the military/police were everywhere. Chance dreamed of going to Texas and had told Cassie about how it was a separate nation and it was like the old United States before the Emperor took it over. He told her that they would have to become citizens of that country and probably be able to finish their schooling and find good jobs. It was their parents they were worried about.

Chance had talked to his Dad about going to Texas and his Dad got angry with him. “You can’t just go running off boy” he said “and especially to a country that could be in war at any time. You know those people are all part of the military of Texas down there and they have no choice when it comes to being conscripted. You want to go and fight in a way? And besides that they have that bloody Mexico on their southern border.” Despite the misleading information and the dangers of Texas, Chance would continue to talk with his dad but it always ended with a heated argument and a few times it ended with his dad slapping him and telling him to get back to work. Cassie did the same thing with their mom but that always seemed to come to a point of Elizabeth telling her that they couldn’t leave the farm because it was their whole life and she wouldn’t leave Garth. The children were stuck and suffered along biding their time until they both turned 18 so they could leave.

Alisha knew that the people in the tunnel would reach the ladder soon but she wanted to see who lived on this farm. When they helped the people to the surface they were going to need a place to stay or go to first off. She flew toward the house and noticed the dust clouds to the north. She swooped that way and saw the big tractor plowing the ground. She looked eastward from there and saw the other dust cloud and when she flew that way she saw the second tractor plowing. So this is a working farm she thought. Perhaps these people could use some help. She swooped back toward the house and could see where repairs were needed on the building. She glanced around and saw the two big barns and one smaller one and could see that they too could use some repair. This place looked almost abandoned to her. She dropped onto a patchy lawn that hadn’t been mowed and had yellowish patches in various places. There was a wood picket fence surrounding the lawn area. The house had a garage to the side that faced the barns and she could see a long driveway winding its self toward the west and south. There were big cottonwood trees around the house and she could see a row of them along one side of the driveway. She was looking around when a side door opened and a young girl rushed out and hurried toward the first big barn. The girl was dressed in bib overalls and her Ginger colored hair was tied into braids as she almost ran across the yard toward the barn. Alisha wasn’t sure but she thought she heard the girl crying. A woman came to the door and called the girls name. “Cassie, you get back here young lady we ain’t done talking.” The girl continued toward the barn without a word. So Alisha levitated and followed her.

Cassie was hot under the collar. Her mother just would not listen to her. The farm was underwater in finance and her father had taken a loan against it to pay the hired help last year. It could not go on much longer and her father and brother were working their lives into the ground trying to keep it going. The only thing that would make it start going back up hill would be for at least 12 to fifteen people to come and work this farm and not ask for any wages until the farm started making money again. She also knew the Emperor was sucking the life out of the other farms except for the ones that he owned and the people worked for him. The reality of this damn world, in her eyes was the Emperor owned everything anyway. The vampire sucked the life out of the businesses in Saint Francis and it was run by criminal military police forces and the Emperor’s fat cats that owned the big stores and banks. She and Chance had been talking to mother and father for at least a year now to let this farm go and move to Texas. Her mother was stubborn and would not leave this place unless her husband gave it up and he was more stubborn than she was. Cassie and Chance both were so frustrated they were plotting to leave on their own soon and hopefully their parents would follow once the children were gone.

She walked into the barn and moved to the feed bins. The cows that were left were out in the pastures right now and would not be coming in until around 6pm or so. It had been very hard and heartbreaking to watch the cows drop over and die from lack of feed and then some how there had been an outbreak of hoof and mouth disease. They had been able to stop the spread but not before they had lost half the heard. Her and Chance suspected the disease was introduced by the boys from the YE farm to their south. There was always trouble from those people and they had even drove their trucks into the yard one night and threw torches into the small barn that held the hay and other feed. The silos were half full of wheat and corn but they could not sell the grains in Saint Francis for any decent price because the big corps that owned the co-ops controlled the pricing and anyone that did not play ball with the emperor was sanctioned with low pricing. She was crying softly as she opened the bins and began to shovel the feed into the trays for the cows so they could be milked. The machines didn’t work like they used to so she had to milk some by hand and that would take her until midnight most nights now. Her mother would help after she got the evening meal cooked and everybody was fed. This life used to be hard yes but not like now.

Alisha had entered the barn and was watching Cassie fill the trays with grain for the cows as the girl dripped tears down her face and onto the cement floor. She decided to speak to the girl. She had read her mind and knew what her and her brother were planning and she and Tamara and Alice could bring the help that was needed for this farm. She had to talk with Cassie first and prepare the family for what was coming. “Cassie, are you so sure you want to leave your parents right now?” Cassie dropped the shovel and spun around. The little girl was sitting on a bail that was resting next to the stacked bails that would be shredded for the cows during the milking hours. Cassie was taken aback and blurted out, “who the hell are you and where did you come from and how do you know my name?” All these questions fell from her mouth as she picked up the shovel and prepared to defend herself. Alisha was ready to disappear and dodge the shovel if she had to. She knew she had startled the girl but time was short now as the people in the tunnel were approaching the ladder.

Alisha took the chance and reached into Cassie’s mind and began to open some doors for the girl. She spoke thus, my name is Alisha and I have two sisters that are in the tunnel below that runs under your farm. We have some people that have escaped from a bad place and need a shelter up here on the surface. I am going to help you remember something you have forgotten Cassie. Cassie was very still as the voice in her head spoke. It felt soothing to her but she was very confused. She tried to speak in the mind and with her mouth but the words would not come. Alisha showed her a door and handed her a key. Unlock this door Cassie, the room inside holds your voice, your thoughts of speaking in the mind. Cassie was dreaming and took the key from the little girl. She stuck the key in the knob and turned it. The door opened and she winced from the bright light that emanated. She saw her self as a young child in another land or place and as she watched, the young child that was her walked into her. She felt the light explode in her mind and found her thoughts and words began to pour out of her mind.

I can see you Alisha, your sisters Tamara and Alice, will they come here also. Yes Cassie they will be bringing some people to help you and your family on this farm. They are without a place on this surface and you can provide that for them, you and your family. All they will need is a place to sleep and eat and they will work this farm and bring it back to health. You must help your mother to accept them. I will go and help your brother to open his mind so he can help your father. The people will come from the west this day. Let me show you some other doors to unlock. You and your brother have been locked up for a very long time. Alisha took Cassie’s hand in the dream of her mind and walked her to doors that held the secrets of invisibility and ability to move matter through time and space and many other gifts. She knew that these children and their parents along with some of the people from below would start healing this area from the corrupt darkness that had enslaved it. This took a very short time as time is measured and then she left Cassie to go and talk with her mother while she went to talk with Chance.

Chance had dozed off as the tractor ran itself on the field. This was the only time it seemed that he could get some decent sleep these days. He didn’t know what his father did with his idle time while the tractors virtually did the job remotely but that was his business. The tractor was making its seventeenth turn on the field and just straightening out when Alisha lowered herself down and through the cab to rest on a spare seat. She could see the 10 set disk plows being pulled behind the tractor as they turned the soil open to the bright sunlight. The boy was almost snoring as she watched and was amazed that the tractor was driving itself. The computer screen at the front showed the progress and she could see the readouts of how many times the tractor had run east and west on this particular piece of land. She sat quiet for a few minutes just watching the boy and made a soft touch in his mind. He opened his eyes and stared at her for just a moment before he came fully awake and tried to back himself out of the driver seat. “What the” he said and then “Who the hell are you and how did you get in here?” Alisha wanted to laugh for just a moment but said “my name is Alisha and your sister and I know each other.” Chance looked at her with doubt on his face and looked around out the windows. “So how did you get in here? I don’t know anyone that would try to board this machine while it is moving like this, and why are you here again?” Alisha could feel that Chance was going to be a bit tougher to help but she forged on. Listen Chance, I know this seems strange to you but we must hurry. I am here to help you and your family.

Chance could hear this little girl speak to him in his mind and at first he was speechless. However, unbeknownst to anyone in his family, he could read minds somewhat and had been able to do it most of his life. He could speak in the mind and had used it to protect his family many times against the people that lived in Saint Francis and the boys that were always causing trouble from the farm south of them. The people were afraid of him mostly and would try to avoid him now. He spoke back to her in the mind and she was surprised but seemed to be very happy. Okay Alisha, you must be from a far away place and you can speak in the mind and you can see that I can too. So how is it you know my sister and where is she? I met her at the barn awhile ago and we got to know each other there. She knows how to speak into the mind and do many other things now that I helped her open locked doors. She is going to help your mother and I have told her that I have two sisters that are bringing some help to your farm so it can be healed. They are people that were homeless and still are but they can work and will not hesitate to help you and your family on this farm. They just need food and a place to sleep. You must help your father to except them. At that moment Chance chose to speak loudly. “You say these people are homeless, where have they come from?” “I think they may have been captured from the streets of Denver or that Airport over there.” Chance looked at the computer screen for progress and said “if they come from there my dad will not accept them. He does not like anyone that comes from that place.”

Alisha could see Chances mind but now that she knew he could read and speak in the mind she was reluctant to delve into his mind without his consent. Helping one that was completely locked up was one thing but invasion of an open mind was not a good thing to do. “Chance, may I ask if you can do special things beside read minds and speak telepathically?” Chance was taken aback with that question. It was so surprising to have anyone else ask him such a thing. He had been able to levitate objects and himself since he was 5 years old and made sure that no one ever knew. He experimented with it when he was alone and as he became older he would wander off by himself into the fields and go to the big pond to fish. He discovered one time when he was confronted by a pack of coyotes that he could make a thing go away. The critters came at him and he touched the first one and it disappeared. He had to touch a few more and the rest backed away from him and scattered. He was confused at first but when he had contemplated on what had happened. He realized that he thought the critters away to a far away place. He had to restrain himself when the other boys teased him and even beat him up at the school. All these thoughts ran through him and he finally read Alisha’s mind. She was very sincere and felt the love from the child. He finally told all the things he had discovered he could do. He didn’t know about Cassie but he suspected she might know some of things he could do. She never said anything to him or anyone else though.

Chance did something with the computer console and the tractor stopped. “Dad is on the field next to this one and I don’t know how far he is into getting it plowed but it’s a sure bet he will not stop for anything until he feels it is time to quit for the day.” “You can go to him and show him what you can do; it will cause him to stop because it is going to be hard for him I think. You must be prepared to convince him that there is help for this farm on their way. I see that you have a big bunk house out by the bigger barn. You know he does not want to leave here so he is going to have to accept some help from somewhere or he will loose this farm and his family.” Chance heard every word Alisha said and knew it to be true He and Cassie were planning to leave very soon and that would be the death knell for this farm and his father. “Okay, I will go and talk with father, you must be going to get those people I think and bring them here. I will try to get father up to the house and hopefully Cassie is convincing mother.” Chance opened the cab door and stepped out to the platform and levitated himself toward where his father was. Alisha turned into the no-time and back out into the tunnel next to the ladder. She could hear the tractor on the tracks but did not know how far away they were yet. Tamara, Alice, I am by a ladder to the surface and there is a place for the people to stay I think. How far are you? Hello sister we are approximately 1 mile from you as far as I can tell. Stay put we shall be there soon.

Carl had told everybody to keep a sharp eye out for the ladders that led to the hatches that led to the surface. They could be missed if people did not pay attention. The tractor was coughing and sputtering so Ammon had been feeding oil into the tube that ran into the pan. The smoke was getting worse as they traveled further into the east. Carl slowed down the speed thinking this would make it a bit easier on the motor. Ammon was riding on the tractor and moved closer to Carl and told him quietly that the tractor motor had run for awhile without oil and the moving parts could have been damaged and that was going to make it come to an end sooner than expected. “We are going to be on foot shortly so we should get these folks prepared to walk.” He no sooner finished saying that when the motor took one big cough and froze up. The tractor glided for about 10 feet and stopped dead on the tracks.

Tamara and Alice had been following and knew the escape ladder was just ahead. When the tractor coughed and stopped they knew it was time to introduce themselves to these people. They became visible and landed on the road. The ten people in the trailer began to stand up. Richard Larsen was the first to ask “what have we stopped for this time Carl?” Ammon was the one that answered. “The tractor is dead, we have to walk from here so gather your packs up and carry what you think you can handle, it might be a long walk till we find one of those ladders to the surface.” Danny Rodgers said “what about whoever is coming from the other end?” Carl hopped off the tractor and told everybody to be quiet. The silence was very loud it seemed. There weren’t any echoes from the east. They couldn’t hear the tractor that Manny and his people had taken either. Jennifer Weddon was still sitting on the bench in the trailer placing some additional food into her pack when she looked up and saw the two little girls standing on the road surface next to the tracks. She turned and grabbed Michelle Farber’s arm and quietly motioned for her to look at the girls.

Jennifer stood up and hopped out of the trailer. Michelle followed her and both women walked to the two girls that just stood and waited for them. “Who are you and were did you come from? Did you climb down here from one of those escape ladders?” The other people standing around the trailer and tractor all turned and watched as Jennifer and Michelle spoke aloud to the newcomers. Carl walked over and stood next to Jennifer and asked the same question. Alice was reading the peoples minds and hearts as Tamara spoke to them. “We have come from the surface and entered that underground base first. We watched you all escape and then we destroyed the factories and the Androids but not before they killed the scientists and the soldiers.” Ammon had walked up and now he asked “how did you two little girls destroy that entire city and factory?” Tamara and Alice both looked at the group of people. Alice spoke in the mind all the people here are good in the spirit and they are looking at living freely without being slaves. They are glad to be away from those factories and will do anything to live on the surface again. They all were homeless before they were captured and forced to work for those monsters that were creating the androids. Alisha is waiting at the ladder that is less than a half mile from us. She says that there is a farm on the surface that needs help and these people could work and live there if they are willing. She says that the people that live there will accept them but it will be a bit awkward at first but there are two children that have great abilities that are talking to their parents. We should send them to the surface without having them climb the ladder. It is a long way up and it would be easier to just send them up. Tamara spoke to Ammon. “We removed the structural columns that supported the entire building of that city.” Ammon chuckled and everyone started to chuckle with him. “So you’re telling us that you acted like Samson and pulled the building down? I am having just a bit of a hard time believing you at the moment.”

Tamara could see that this man was the hardest to convince what she had just said. The others were skeptical of course but they would accept their fates when they were taken to the surface. Ammon was very stubborn and it was understandable. It was understandable for all these people as their lives had been flipped into the world of loss and hardships far beyond what most people experienced. Alisha, can you come here from where you are through the no-time? Yes sister I can, are the people ready to go to the surface? We can take them from there. They will be but we must show them what we are capable of first. Alice, you must go and retrieve the ones that are trapped at the end of the tunnel. Leave Manny and the two men that have hurt the others. They will be buried alive in the cavern full of water and debris and believe in the end. We will meet you on the surface with the two women and the three men.

Ammon didn’t know what to believe about these little girls tales. He suspected they had come down one of the ladders somewhere close by. That gave him hope if nothing else. He was sad for them because they were probably abandoned by their parents if they had any. He started to ask the one that spoke to them where the ladder was when he was standing on the second floor causeway of the Denver Airport. The little girl was standing in front of him and he slowly turned around to see the railing. There were no other people and that gave him the spooks. He turned and walked to the railing and looked down at the empty building. There were no people anywhere and he wondered what had happened. He turned around and the little girl was floating in the air. His hair on the back of his neck stood up and he thought about running away as fast as he could.

“Do not be afraid, Ammon I have brought you into a future time line. This could happen if I and my sisters do not stop the emperor from using weapons that he has access to. The weapons were banned in the past but there were some overlooked and we know they are in the State of Kansas. There are others in the world that is being looked after by others of my family. My name is Tamara. Ammon stared at the little girl and asked. “Where are the people? How is it that you can be in the air, how did you bring me here?” Tamara knew this man would be hard to convince. She knew it when she decided to bring him here. “Listen Ammon, in this time line, the Emperor is down in the city where you and those others are now part of the Android army. He was able to launch his missiles at Texas which in turn caused Russia and China plus a number of other countries to launch their hidden arsenals. The world became a nuclear nightmare for a short period of time and as we stand here the billions of people on the world are dying off. In this time line the human race will cease to be dominating within a span of 10 years and those androids that the Emperor has so graciously created will begin to takeover. You do not want to know how this all turns out.”

Ammon shivered from the description this little girl gave. “You have brought me here because I don’t believe you? Are you a God and those others you talk about?” No Ammon I am not a God. I am a human just as you are only I am able to access the gifts that the Divine Creator bestowed upon us all. That is how I am able to do the things I do. It is for the good of mankind always.” Ammon had moved to a bench and sat down. His mind was full of questions and memories. He was remembering when his parents were still alive and they lived in a place that was close to the ocean. He remembered the things he did when he was very small that baffled his father but not his mother. She guarded him closely and spoke softly to him to not do certain things because he would be taken away and never see her or his father again. He remember when he stopped doing the strange things and his mind became blank at that point. He looked at Tamara and said “you say you are human and can all humans do the things you do then? Even the ones like that crummy little used car salesman?” Tamara knew where this was going and said “Yes and no Ammon. Would you prefer to hear the answers in a better place than this?” Ammon stood and looked at the girl. “I would prefer that yes; can you take us back to the tunnel?” “Yes I can but wouldn’t it be better if we go back to the surface?” Ammon watched the girl reach out and he was still shaking his head when Jennifer hugged him. He was standing in a big wheat field with the others plus Opal Rivers and Diana Jorgensen and three of the men that had left with Manny. Manny and his two trusted toads as he had called them were missing. The sun was falling toward the horizon in the west when the three little girls began to talk to them about the farm and the people and how they could do the things they did.

Alisha had materialized along side of Alice just as Tamara and the man named Ammon disappeared. Carl and the others witnessed the appearance and disappearance and gathered themselves closer. Alisha spoke to Alice and told her about the surface and the farm and how they could take the people up. Carl spoke up and asked “where has the other little girl taken Ammon?” The people were almost frightened of these girls and they could tell. Alisha spoke to the man, “Carl, Tamara has taken Ammon to a future place and time line and she will bring him back soon. Meanwhile are all of you ready to go to the surface?” Jennifer spoke up quickly. “How do you propose to do that there is no ladder here, did you come down one and how did you just appear? We can’t leave Ammon down here.” Alisha and Alice looked at each other and said “Yes there is a ladder just ahead but we did not come down that way. We can take you to the surface without climbing a ladder. It would be a hardship for you to do that and carry all your packs.” Michelle Farber stepped forward and asked “are you witches?” The girls almost laughed at that but Alice said “no Michelle we are not witches, we are just two girls that can do extraordinary things and we can show you how to do some also.” “Magic then, I have seen people that can do magic tricks but your appearing and disappearing is a bit beyond what I have seen.”

Carl finally spoke and said “enough of this, what is it you girls want from us and why are you following us. Are you orphans and somehow found your way down here?” “No Carl we are not orphans either but we are looking for some dangerous weapons that the Emperor has down here somewhere and we mean to destroy them. You may not believe what Tamara said about us destroying the city back there but we are capable of making things disappear or become non-existent. If you want to believe it is magic then so be it but we will help all of you escape this place before we continue with our mission.” Alisha had spoke this to Carl and then asked if everyone was ready to get some sunshine for a change. “Tamara and Ammon will be meeting us on the surface so prepare your selves.” She turned to Alice and said in the mind, when we get them up there you can go and get the others. They will be walking back because the other three men threw them off the tractor. Let’s go up. Both girls began to touch the people and the next thing they all realized was they were standing in a field of wheat and the sun was warm with a breeze blowing across the land. Alisha asked them to sit down and she would talk some more to them. Alice disappeared and the people were becoming used to this action now.

In the tunnel about 2 miles from the entrance that was completely blocked by the building debris and other stuff Alice found the two women and three men stumbling alone on the road beside the rails. When she appeared she waited for them to walk to her. They looked like they had been beaten by someone and were forlorn as they stumbled along. A tall woman seemed to be leading them while she held another woman who had a black swollen eye and was walking with a hitch in her leg. The men were helping each other also as if they had all been in a vehicle accident or something. The Tall woman was the first to see Alice as they came closer and stopped suddenly. Alice spoke quickly, “do not be afraid, I am here to help you. We must leave this place because it will soon receive a rush of water filled with debris that will be deadly and the ceiling will fall in. The woman that was being helped by the tall woman was crying and the tall woman did not hesitate to speak to the others and tell them to hurry. Alice waited until they all moved close to each other and touched them. They all found themselves on the surface in the wheat field with the others.

Manny and his two henchmen Buzz and Roland had argued with Opal and Diana about coming back to the factory. George, Juan and Corbin had begun to see how Manny and his two minions were trying to control everyone by the time they had driven the distance back. Manny stopped the tractor a few miles from the entrance to the factories and told everyone to get out. Diana had been stubborn so Manny grabbed her and hit her in the face with his fist and then threw her down causing her to twist her left leg. George Harris tried to attack Manny and was beaten to the ground. Juan Reager and Corbin Tyson both tried to help George but the two gorilla’s Buzz and Roland beat them onto the ground, Opal watched the altercation while she was helping Diana. She had to take a scarf and wipe the blood from her face. Diana’s leg had been twisted very badly. It wasn’t broken but she was sure Diana was in great pain from it. She even began to think that Diana’s hip could be dislocated. The three men that had been beaten were bloody in the face and might have a broken rib or two. Manny had produced a pistol from somewhere and that was the end of their journey with Manny and his minions. Manny, Roland and Buzz got back on the tractor and continued toward the factories. As they walked back toward the others Opal knew it would be days before they could reach them and they would be long gone anyway. Her hope had been dashed away with the beatings and then being left. When she saw the little girl something inside of her leaped with joy. And then the little girl had taken them to the surface.

Manny and the two that were with him stopped the tractor at the edge of a complete clog of building debris. There were huge chunks of concrete and steel mixed with wood and other types of materials. The tunnel was completely blocked. None of them knew how deep this stuff was or how far it was to the big cavern. Manny could see small rivulets of water on the road bed and leaking through the 20 foot high debris block. Something did not seem right. How could this be here? What had happened to cause this? The men remembered the explosions or rumblings when they were well on their way from this place but could not equate what it might be. Manny began to realize the enormity of this sight. They all knew about the huge city that was encased within one giant building of the cavern but to see this debris blocking the tunnel was a mystery. As they stood looking at the sight they could hear a creaking and moaning. They watched as the debris began to move toward them. Buzz was the first to turn and run back toward the tractor. As he ran he yelled to the others, WE GOT TO GET OUT OF HEAR, THERE IS SOMETHING PUSHING THAT DEBRIS PLUG TOWARD US. COME ON MANNY AND ROLAND LETS GET THE TRACTOR HEADING BACK. Manny did not want to believe what Buzz was yelling about but he began to back peddle because the debris was moving and the water rivulets were growing in size. Roland had turned and ran as well and reached the tractor. He jumped into the trailer and said “let’s get the hell out of here.” Manny had walked fast then ran finally and jumped on the tractor and stuck the key in and turned it on. Just as he shifted the gear into forward the debris pile pushed forward with a wrenching, grinding and loud crashing sound. Manny stomped the accelerator down and the little tractor jerked forward. Roland was looking back at the plug of debris and watched in slow motion as it rushed toward them. He was screaming when the big I beam flew into him and the debris overtook the little tractor and it became part of the debris as the ocean of water pushed it all through the tunnel. It was if they were roaches or bugs on the edge of a giant plug of hair as it was being flushed by something called plumbers helper. Roland had died instantly while Buzz tried to climb onto the tractor and was knocked forward into Manny by a large chunk of concrete that crushed him and Manny both as the tractor was pushed sideways and then forward with all the debris and water. The tunnel was flooded for 5 long miles with debris and water before it all ran its course and lay in a pool in a shallow area of the road bead. At the beginning of the tunnel the ceiling began to crumble in and with a loud boom that was not heard by anyone, the ceiling caved in for a stretch of two complete miles filling the tunnel with a solid plug of mud and rock.

Seventeen people sat in a circle listening to three children that floated three feet off the ground in a sitting position. The field of wheat swayed and moved in waves as the wind blew it to and fro. The farm house and its out buildings could be seen through the big cottonwood trees that surrounded it. There were groves of these trees growing to the north and bordering the southern borders of the big fields. The sun was low in the west but not yet setting on the distant mountains that could be seen on the horizon. The air was beginning to cool in the late afternoon. The people were being told about the farm and its owners and how they were in need of help to keep the farm running. They were told how the three children were able to bring them all to the surface and how they could do many things through being able to open doors in their minds and access the gifts that had been locked away by outside sources eons ago to the human race. The girls had listened to their stories of how they had become homeless and how they had been captured from the streets and taken to the underground city and factories below the big airport to make those scary android creatures. The people had finally believed the children and their magic ways and asked many questions. The children told them that they would come and help them learn how to open doors in their own lives but they had to complete their mission first and it was vitally important for them to destroy the weapons that the Emperor was bound to use. Ammon spoke to them and told about his trip to the future time line that was the end of this world due to the Emperor being able to use nuclear weapons. He actually named the deadly weapons. The girls finally told them that the family was being prepared to receive them when they went there and it would be a place for them to live. They told all of them how the world was being healed and it was coming in time.

Danny Rodgers had listened to the conversations about the special things the girls could do and that made him think of the things he could do when he was a little boy living in Wyoming. He never told anybody about being able to read thoughts from others or being able to levitate objects. He had joined the Air Force when he was 18 and that was one year before the Emperor had taken control of the country. He was stationed in various places around the world but wound up being stationed at the underground facility below Kansas City. He had been assigned to the ballistic missiles that were in underground silos scattered across Kansas and Nebraska. His job was to guard the control station in the tram tunnel. It was when the nuclear treaties came and the emptying of the facility to be shipped to China for the war that he decided to desert the emperor’s military. He made his way to Denver and disappeared into the homeless community. When he was captured with 4 other homeless he thought he would be caught and shot but instead he was taken to the underground base below DIA. No one every recognized him so he remained quiet and worked with the others. He knew the tram had ceased to be operational and he knew where the control station was located but he had thought the missiles had been rendered obsolete.

I can tell you where that control station is for those nuclear missiles. You can look into my mind and see if you so choose.
Danny couldn’t wait any longer to allow these extraordinary children to speak to him by telepathy. Alice was the one that first knew that Danny could communicate with the mind. She had picked it up when she first reached into the peoples minds in the tunnel. She had told Tamara and Alisha but told them that he was keeping it a secret and had done so since he was only a child. The girls decided to wait for him to give his consent before they would speak to him in the mind. Alice was the first to talk to him in the mind. We are very glad you have decided to speak in the mind to us Danny. We have waited for you to finally speak. We know you have kept this a secret for a long time but now you can begin to use your abilities and exercise them without retribution. Will you come with us to destroy the deadly weapons? Danny was surprised at first that these girls knew that he could hear them in the mind and they could hear his thoughts. He realized they were like him and could do much more so he merely said I cannot do the things you do. I can only hear your thoughts and speak to you in the mind. I can levitate objects but I do not know how to move myself like you can. I did work for the Air force and was stationed in that underground base below Kansas City so that is how I know about what you are looking for and can show you in my mind. Alice could feel the deeper hesitation in this man as he uneasily spoke to them in the mind. Danny, we will help you to open your locked doors. You are already ahead of these others because most of them are locked up completely. It always takes time to unlock people’s minds but everybody on this world has the capabilities to do what we do. The gifts were given eons ago and then locked up by those that wanted to control our species.

We shall take these folks to the farm where they will meet the Womack’s and become part of the family as they settle in. Cassie and Chance the children are open in the mind and they are helping their parents to open their minds. All of your friends will learn in time to open their minds also but you can come with us if you choose and we will show you many wonders that you will understand. Come, let us go and meet the farmers. The girls lowered themselves to the ground and Tamara asked all of them as she turned around and looked at them, “So do you believe us now? We have brought you out of that dark place below into the light and are taking you to meet the people of this farm so you can help them. They will help you in turn. You are going to a new home, one you have not had for a very long time.” Carl was the first to stand up and Ammon was next and the people all stood up. Carl spoke to Tamara and said “we are ready” and waited for the girls to lead the way. The group of people walked toward the farm house with the three children leading them.

67 A FAILED HEINRICK MANUEVER

Cassie had left the barn after she made sure the feed bins were full. Her mind was open and she could see who she was finally. She inner-stood what had been going on in the city of Saint Francis and the big farm to the south. Her and Chance had been planning to leave because her father and mother were refusing to give up on the farm. Her father refused to hire more help because he had become very angry when the long time help up and left one day. She and Chance had grown up with many of them and then the finances dried up and the people had no choice but to move on. The banker and the sheriff caused trouble for them constantly and had already driven 70% of the other small farmers off. The big one to the south was owned by Heinrick Limorish who just so happened to own the bank and the big grange co-op. The man had been taking the farm lands illegally for years by foreclosures and with the Emperor standing behind him he could do whatever he wanted using the jack booted sheriff and his deputies. It wasn’t uncommon to find the owners of some of the farms dead when they tried to stand up to the banker. She remembered their neighbors the Collins loosing their house to a devastating fire where one of the kids, Tommy was burned alive. The Collins’ were completely devastated and Limorish foreclosed on their farm within a month after the big fire. They were the latest ones to leave and her and Chance knew it was just a matter of time before the Emperor’s minion took their farm. They both were very worried that their father would be killed and that was why her and Chance were always arguing with both their parents to sell the place and get away.

When Alisha showed up today and told her about the people coming to help and then opening her mind up, it gave her hope again and she knew she would have to talk to her mother about the people and tell her about the gifts she had discovered. Her father’s choice would rest on Chance talking to him about the people. They both would be able to give hope to their parents now instead of always arguing and threatening to leave. When she entered the house her mother was sitting at the kitchen table and crying. Cassie sat down across from her and reached over to take her hand. “What is it mother?” Elizabeth Womack looked up at her daughter with tears flowing from her eyes. She was holding a piece of paper in her hands and said “your father is going to be very upset and I am worried he is going to get himself hurt very badly if not killed.” Cassie reached into her mother’s thoughts and recoiled with fear and pain. She took the piece of paper from her mother and read it for herself. It was a short paragraph typed from a computer she was sure and signed by none other than Heinrick Limorish the banker who held the note for the farm. She knew that her father had taken a loan against the property to pay the hired help the day they left. He had gambled on the prospect that the crops would come in and he would be able to pay the loan back. However the crops were not enough and without the help he and Chance were not able to harvest the required amount and then the Grange did not pay the standard amount per bushel and Heinrick gave her father 1 year to pay back the loan. The year was up and the loan had doubled with interest. The letter was a foreclosure with no stipulations and they were to vacate within the week. All the equipment was to be left to the Limorish’s so they could not sell anything to possibly pay down on the loan.

The letter was a death knell for her father she knew and it could be that Chance would be harmed also The Limorish family were all evil in her eyes. She had her run-ins with the boys plenty of times and the farm hands were no better. They all were birds of a feather so to speak and they had been responsible for burning the Collins farm and she was sure, for the deaths of many others. She told her mother about the people coming to help and needing a place to stay and how they did not need money to work. Her mother was beside herself and said “we will not be living here much longer Cassie so what makes you think we can take these people in? You read the paper that damn banker and his clan have finally managed to steal our farm and you know they will be bringing their hired guns to make sure we don’t take anything except the clothes on our back when they kick us out.’ “I am worried that your father is going to shoot at them when they come and that will start the war for sure. They will burn us out then. You know they don’t care about the house, it’s the land and the cattle they want.” Cassie could see her father getting his gun and telling Chance to get his and setting up for a battle. Garth Womack was a very stubborn man and a dangerous one when he was wronged. This farm had been his life and they all had worked it most of their lives. She could use her new found abilities to help but she also knew the Limorish clan would come in force and bring the law. She desperately wanted to speak to Alisha. “Well the letter says we got a week so perhaps these people that are coming can help dad and Chance gather the crops in and we can get the money to pay the bank off?” “Cassie you know the Limorish’s are not going to let us pay anything off. They have wanted this farm for a long time and they’ll kill your father before they let him pay off that damn loan.”

Chance had flown to the field where his father was driving one of the big tractors. He was emboldened by the girl and it was time for him to let his family know his abilities. Alisha had helped him to finally open up from his slumber. When she had told him about the people that were coming and willing to work for food and a place to stay he knew that the farm could be saved. When she told him how Cassie had become like him in knowledge and had opened up her own abilities it gave him hope and made him want to stay to make the farm once again a good prosperous place. He landed on the walk outside the cab and looked at his dad.

Garth Womack had set the computer on his tractor to the GPS and programmed it to make the appropriate runs back and forth on the field. The technology that ran the tractors had not changed since the late teens due to the Emperor stopping any public progress in the technologies and hording it for his military and police forces. Today, Garth was thinking about how he was going to pay off the loan to the Saint Francis bank, owned by Heinrick Limorish. He knew the time was up for payment and tomorrow was the default day. He had been expecting Heinrick and his minions to come and tell him and his family to get out. He had harvested 7500 bushels of wheat this past week and today was plowing the fields. He and Chance had to work almost continuously to make this work and the 7500 bushels would fetch enough money to pay the loan off if the grange gave him the standard price. He knew that the grange was also owned by the Limorish and it was going to be a hassle to get the standard price but he was ready to stand his ground. His farm was 1 of the 3 largest ones left that produced wheat and other products. So he had a chance to get the standard price at least. Heinrick had managed to steal the many other farms that were in range of Saint Francis and the county so he was controlling the prices and he had taken over the city and pretty much the county. Garth also knew that the man was a murderer and backed by the Emperor so it was and would be hard to get his price and pay the bank off. He was working on his strategy to get the wheat to the grange on the morrow when he noticed Chance standing outside the cab and looking at the field behind the tractor and its 10 connected disk plows. Garth opened the door and asked “how the hell did you get on the tractor and what are you doing here? You’re supposed to be disking that 40 acre field to the east.”

Chance could hear the anger in his father. This past year it was a constant argument with him or so it seemed but he knew what was happening around them and the fact that this farm was on the chopping block and the criminals or Emperor’s minions were circling the wagons, served to add fuel to the fire between him and his dad. “Dad, will you listen to me? I know we keep going round and round on the issue of this farm not doing good anymore and it is for sure that since you took that loan to pay the help so they could leave, the Limorish’s have had you over a barrel. That piece of crap laughed and smirked when you came to get the loan and it was his perfect open door to take this farm from you after all these years of trying everything he could to steal it from. You know you handed it to him when you did that?” Garth looked at his son with a frown and then a growl on his face. He knew Chance was right and it wasn’t going to matter how much money he could come up with, Heinrick was going to screw him because he wanted the farm and he wanted the Womack’s to be gone. He and Heinrick had been at war for the past 10 years now and it was always an unknown what would happen next. Chance and Cassie had both had to quit going to the school because the Limorish clan made life a living hell for them, which they did for most of the people that lived in the county and Saint Francis. For God sakes Elizabeth had even been attacked in the city. “What is it you want me to do son, this farm is all we got and I know we can make it work again. We just need the right help. I know that bastard Heinrick is going to try and screw me or us. Tomorrow we are taking the 7500 bushels of wheat to the grange and will have to haggle for the price but we should be able to get enough to pay that damn ill conceived loan off. Perhaps that will satisfy the bank or Limorish. We have to do it in front of the people so they can possibly stand up with us.”

Garth had shut the tractor down and now they sat in the middle of a row while the wind blew the dust from the plowed field toward the east. “Dad I hear what you say and I know you are bound and determined to keep this farm. I must tell you something that I have never told anyone before.” Garth had trepidation at that remark from his son. “What is it then Chance, have you robbed a bank or something?” “No dad, I haven’t robbed a bank. You and mother did not know that I could read minds and I can do other things that may seem like magic to many people but this is the way I have always been and it has come in handy in the past. I am now to the understanding that Cassie can do these things also. You know that we have been talking about leaving this place but it is hard to run out on you and mother. When the Himinez family and the others up and left last year it was very hard. I swear we both would have been gone by now if the family had stayed but this farm is doomed or was until today.”

Garth’s mind was buzzing with what Chance just said. The reading of minds and other things made him very curious and to hear that Cassie could do the same things made him stand up and step outside on the walkway. “Chance, can you levitate, can you make objects levitate, can you make things disappear?” Chance was surprised that his father asked these things. “Why do you ask father, did you know and does mother know also?” Garth turned and looked at his now grown son and said quietly. “Yes Chance, your mother and I both knew about you two when you were born. Your mother and I both can do these things but we made a pact to not show them to anyone around here or to you kids until the time became right. I guess we all have been hiding ourselves away for far too long.” I think it is time for you and me to go to the house and tell your mother and perhaps you can find Cassie, she was the one that was locked up more than any of us.’ “What did you mean about this farm being doomed until today?”

I met a little girl today that is like us dad. She showed me who she was and told me she has two sisters that can do the same things. She said she came from that underground tunnel that runs over to Kansas City and her and her sisters have rescued a group of people that need a place to stay and work. She said they are very willing to work and they need no money. They will work for a place to stay and food. She is going to bring them to our house this very day and asked if I would talk to you about putting them to work. She knows the situation with our farm and how the Emperor’s minions are running the city. Will you at least listen to these people?” Garth was almost thrilled in his mind. It seemed like a light had been turned on today and all the dark clouds were being blown away. He grabbed his son by his arms and smiled. “Come Chance we must go and talk with your mother and sister and yes I will listen to these people whenever they come.” You know how to fly son so let us go to the house by that way. The man and the boy who was a man in stature rose from the tractor and moved toward the house in a southern flight.

Elizabeth was sitting at the table and now in a daze. She knew without a doubt that Garth was going to go after Heinrick and that would be the end of him because Heinrick had a small army of minions to protect him and do his bidding. “Cassie we should start packing what we want to keep and gathering the other things that could help us get started someplace else. We have a week supposedly so we can move a number of things up to Haigler where Randle and Harriet live.” “No mother, I think we should talk with these people that are coming and I know father said something about having enough wheat to pay that loan off tomorrow. I do not know if you and dad know that Chance and I can talk telepathically and we can do other things. I just rediscovered my abilities today and the girl that showed me said I could always do these things but I was shut out from them.” Elizabeth had been so fraught with herself and the nasty letter that she almost did not hear what her daughter had said to her. She had been holding the letter and seeing the coming destruction of her husband and her mind had shut out everything but that. It was as if someone had been banging on the front door and finally it was kicked in. She became startled and looked at Cassie. Oh Cassie, it has been forever since your father and I made a pact to not encourage you and Chance to ever use your abilities. Your father and I both have abilities and we had them when we were children also. That is why we came together. Our love for one another had always been there we just needed to find each other again. We did not want to subject you two to a life of out casting while you grew up. We always knew that you and Chance would one day ask us and as you have done today tell us what you are capable of. She stopped talking in the mind and spoke loudly. “We must tell your father and Chance when they come in from the field. This letter is going to be a very bad thing for your father to handle so we must be prepared.’ “When did you say these people would be coming?” “I don’t know exactly mother, Alisha told me they would come today. Should we at least get a diner started, it is getting late in the afternoon and the cows are probably already moving into the feeding pins ready for milking.”

The group of people from the tunnel walked across the field and entered the land that was not plowed and dotted with sparse trees. Thy crossed through the trees and came to a wide dirt road which they crossed and began to walk up the long drive that led to the big farm house. The three little girls walked in front of them and knew they would be greeted in a friendly manner. Alisha had seen what Cassie did and then Chance also and she knew that Garth and Elizabeth were both very open minded folk. All three girls knew about the Womack’s and how they all had the abilities. They were bringing the homeless group of folks to live on and work this farm. The sun was at the horizon now and it would soon be getting dark. Alice had seen Garth and Chance flying from the Northern field as they approached the halfway mark on the driveway. It would be just a few more minutes until they walked into the big circle drive that ran in front of the house. Carl and Ammon were going to be the speakers for the group.

Chance spotted the people walking up the road as he and his dad flew over the big barn and landed in the front of the house. Garth was exuberant to get in the house and talk to his wife about the revelations that had finally come this day. As they both walked through the front door they could smell the grill out back. Something was cooking and it smelled good. Garth hurried into the wash room while Chance hopped upstairs to wash the grime from his hands and face. He knew the people were coming and he wanted to tell his mom about putting on some extra steaks and whatever it was she was cooking. He finished washing and hurried back down the stairs and noticed it was very quiet. He moved to the back door and saw his dad holding a piece of paper while his mom and Cassie were sitting at the big table. The grill had been closed to cook what was on the coals. He walked over to his dad and looked at him with a question. His dad slowly handed the paper to him and sat down himself. Chance read the small paragraph and saw the signature and the stamp of the Sheriff below it. He walked to the grill and opened the lid. The potatoes and corn that had been wrapped in the aluminum foil were cooking and he slipped the paper under the grill into the coals. Cassie watched him and then spoke in his mind. Mom knows what we can do and I take it Dad does also. Those Limorish’s are not going to get this place Chance but we are going to have to fight for it you understand? Yes Cassie I know, this is going to be the tell tale of us keeping this farm and putting a stop to that rotten banker and his clan of thieves. Dad told me today that we are taking the wheat to the grange tomorrow so it will be there that we make or break this business. The people are out front I think and we need to go and meet them. “Dad and mom we got company and I think we need to welcome them so can we cook some more food, I am sure these folks are hungry.”

Re: Story of fiction and fantasy and science fiction

Garth had flashed angry red and the thought of killing Heinrick almost overwhelmed him. Elizabeth had spoken into his mind and semi calmed him. She could always read him inside and out. The news of his children finally growing into knowing and telling him and Elizabeth had overridden his murderous thoughts also. The people that Chance had told him about were in the front yard and he meant to do just what Chance suggested. He didn’t know how many were there but they could use all the help they could get at this time. He spoke to Elizabeth and told here to get the extra steaks and other fixings and asked Cassie to help. He was going to meet these people and Chance was going with him. They would bring the folks around the west side of the house. He motioned to Chance and they both walked to the gate at the west side of the house and disappeared toward the front.

20 people stood in front of the big two story farm house. Carl spoke up and said “Let me do the talking. We are guests here and may not be welcomed so if that be the case we will all move on and it is important that we stay together until we find a place to rest our weary bones. Do we agree on that?” They all nodded to that question and stood waiting. Alisha felt Chance and his father walking around the west side of the house and told the girls that they were coming. Garth and Chance came into sight and Chance walked over and greeted Alisha. Garth walked up and stood in front of Carl who had placed himself at the front of the group. “My son and daughter both have told me and their mother about you folks coming today. We did not know how many of you there would be but now that you have made it this far we are extending a welcome to you and would be pleased if you would join us for dinner that is if you would like to?” Carl reached out his hand and Garth met him with a good hand shake. “My name is Carl and we should introduce ourselves properly. We are very thankful that you are offering us a meal and will accept your offer.” Garth smiled at the man and felt relieved by his manner. “Come then there is a place in the back yard where we can get to know each other and enjoy a good meal. We are just regular farmers but we can put on a good feed. Perhaps later some of you would like to help me and my daughter, milk our cows?” That got a smile and giggles out the folks and they all began to walk with Garth and Chance as they moved to the back of the house.

Heinrick Limorish sat in his extra large study looking at the sunset. A bottle of scotch single malt whisky sat on the oversized desk with an empty crystal cut glass beside it. He reached out and poured the whisky into the glass and then took another gulp. The bottle was half full and he had been drinking since his diner. He had the original copy of the letter he had sent to the Womack’s earlier today setting on the desk. His mouth had a wicked smile on it. He had maneuvered Garth Womack into signing his farm away 1 year ago when he had asked for a loan to pay his hired help. He knew that the Womack’s would never be able to repay the loan and he had been generous to give Garth 1 year to pay the debt off. He made it quite hard for the man to make any money from his farm. He had sent his sons out to spread the defunct hoof and mouth disease to the mans cows and it killed more than half of them before Garth had managed to gain the rare cure for the disease that had been wiped out in the early 2000’s. He had almost got caught by the damn patriots but was able to skirt around it by his corrupt judges and Law enforcement. He had to kill three people that knew how he had obtained the disease and they had seen his sons poison the pond on the Womack’s farm. His three sons were just like him and always bullying the other kids in the schools. Curtis and Rodger had harassed Garth’s wife and daughter in the big feed store not long ago and managed to knock the mother down. Rodger received a good kick to his crouch and was laid up for two days. Heinrick was surprised that Garth did not come after him and his sons over that incident but then he had allowed his sons to do many things to those people and Garth knew he was being baited.

He had wanted the Womack farm for years and had managed to take most of the others in the county. When Garth had come to the bank and asked for the loan last year he knew he was going to get the farm finally and it would all appear so legal. There were others in the city that did not like the way he did business but after all he did own the bank and the Grange and many other stores and they couldn’t fight him lest he ran them out of business and or they died from some sudden unknown cause. When he drafted the note today and had Buck Buchanan sign it and seal it, he gave them 1 week to get out and leave everything. He was planning on taking his boys and the hired help over to the farm and physically evicting the family. It would give him great pleasure to humiliate the Great Garth Womack. He would have the Sheriff and his deputies to back him also and he intended to make these people leave without anything but the clothes on their back. There was a time when Elizabeth Womack and his wife Susan were good friends. It was two years after the emperor took over that he became bitter to the Womack’s. Susan and Elizabeth had taken a trip to Wichita one day and while they were in the city Susan was killed by a gang of thieves. He had accused Elizabeth of allowing the murder to happen and the ensuing court battle left him and Garth both in a deep hole and mortal enemies. He had accused Elizabeth of killing his beloved wife and after the charges were dropped in the court he began to think of ways of making the Womack’s pay for his loss. His oldest son Curtis was the only son of Susan. The other two boys had been born to a prostitute he had relations with in Kansas City. After Clyde, his youngest was born he took the prostitute to Kansas and had her killed in one of the lower districts of the city. He always had a hard time remembering her name, Carla or something he thought but the two boys she fostered were his blood and all three of his offspring had his mean streak.

The meeting of the homeless and the family of the Womack’s was the beginning of a wondrous healing for the folks that had been left homeless in their lives and the Womack’s that were on the verge of becoming homeless. The 17 people that were freed from the slavery of the Emperor easily accepted the kind offer to live on the farm and help work it. Elizabeth and Cassie both were overwhelmed with the love from the women. It was as if a natural family was having a large potluck and get together. The women immediately began to help make the food and Elizabeth had taken them into the house and showed them the big pantry and the kitchen where they promptly began to prepare foods for the dinner. Cassie and Jaclyn McKnight were close in age and Jaclyn told her that her brother was a very hansom young man. Cassie knew that Jaclyn was going to become very close with Chance because Chance had been drawn to her almost right away when they all entered the back yard. Opal and Diana were close to Elizabeth’s age and Elizabeth immediately felt a deeper connection to these two. She showed Opal where the medical supplies were located and they were all shown where the bathrooms were located. The men gathered around the big gas grill and Garth showed them where there was another one so they all pitched in and set the second grill up and got it fired up. The men also helped to gather a couple of tables and chairs and set those up. Chance had introduced himself to Danny Rodgers who could hear Chance’s mind and they took Bobby Weingarten and Tom Greensboro to gather some small logs and chopped firewood for the big pit and set it up. Tamara, Alisha and Alice sat at a table and watched the very warm connection of the homeless factory workers and the Womack’s.

Garth had eaten his diner and stood to go and milk his cows. He was looking for Cassie who usually helped him but she was no where in sight. George Harris, Juan Reager and Corbin Tyson had been sitting at the table close by and had heard Garth speak about the cows and how he and his daughter had to milk them every night and feed them in the morning and afternoon. All three of them had worked on dairy farms before they migrated to Denver. The farms across the country had begun to go broke due to the rotten control of the Emperor. The big corporation farms were the only ones that seemed to operate and most of them had become robotic in nature. The three stood up and asked if they could help milk the cows as they knew how to operate the machinery and also how to milk the old fashioned way. These men were also engineers and mechanics. Garth had spoke of how his milking machines had begun to break down since the families that had left a year prior were the ones that kept the machines up and running. Sheldon McShane and Brian Kildare stood also and joined in. “We can help also; both of us were raised on the old dairy farms in Missouri so we know something about the cows. Garth had to smile, 5 men had offered to help him milk his herd and that would make the job go quickly. He and Cassie would usually work until midnight most days but with these men he might be able to get the job done before 10 pm. He told Elizabeth it was time to do the milking and they would be back sooner than normal.

Elizabeth and the other women had cleaned up the dishes while Carl and Ammon talked with Timothy Sabo and Richard Larsen about taking the two big trucks to the grange on the morrow. Carl and Ammon both knew how to drive the big trucks and Timothy and Richard had also been truck drivers at sometime in their past. All four of these men also knew how to operate the big tractors and combines. It was as if the Womack’s were receiving a great gift of knowledgeable help from the people that miraculously showed up from the tunnel. The farm was going to become a very busy place and prosperous once again. Garth had told them at the diner about taking the trucks to the grange and selling his wheat to pay off the loan so he could keep the farm. He had told them about the letter he had received from the banker and how it was going to be a fight but if they could stand their ground in front of the people they might be able to avoid any bloodshed and get the banker to accept the payment. He told them that he had barrowed 10,000 dollars to pay the previous hired help and the banker had given it to him under certain conditions. He had to pay off the loan within a year with interest of course and if he defaulted the banker would own the farm. Ammon who was good with numbers had figured the banker had gone beyond the written interest and fraudulently added percentage to the note. Garth told them all about the war he and this banker man had been fighting for years and how the man would not stop at anything to get his hands on the Womack farm.

Elizabeth had brought the women out to the fire pit and asked them to go with her to the big living quarters where the previous hired help lived. Apparently there was a big bunk house with a kitchen and restrooms for the men and the women had a separate house with the same amenities. Ammon who was sweet on Jennifer Weddon as she was with him, stood to go with them, so the other men joined in and they all walked out to the bunk houses. Elizabeth and Cassie had shuttered up the buildings and placed old sheets over all the furniture inside. The people got busy and began to remove the sheets and do some dusting to prepare the houses for occupying. They did what they could for the night and would do more as the days went by, that is if they could keep the farm thought Elizabeth.

When Garth and the 5 men with him entered the big milking barn the lights were already on and the cows were standing in the rows with their heads stuck through the slots into the feeding bins. Garth could hear Cassie talking with someone and figured she was already starting the milking process. He showed the men the machines and watched as they instinctively moved to the cows and began to hook up the hoses. Garth had told them that only about half of them actually worked so George was the first to find the big machine and began to examine it. Juan joined him and soon Corbin did also after they had hooked the working ones up to the cows. They quickly figured out the problem with the ones that did not seem to work and got them to working and soon all the cows were hooked up. Cassie had been showing Jaclyn how to milk by hand and when the men showed up and began to fix the machines she took Jaclyn and showed her the big milk vats and the sterilizing process. It wasn’t long before the process began to wind down and the cows started to be unhooked and taken out to the pasture for their nightly bed down. The milk was sterilized and pumped into the tank that was on the chassis of one of the big rigs. The grain truck was a dual tanker rig and was already full of the wheat to be taken to the grange in Saint Francis in the morning. The milk was sold to the milk factory at the grange where it was then sold to a large bottling plant. The money that was made on that was just enough to keep the process in operation. The men inside had started to clean the system and the floor of the milking stations. Cassie had taken Jaclyn around and showed her the process and how everything had to be cleaned and sterilized and this was done on a daily basis. She was so happy that her father had brought the 5 men who helped and they were done by 9 pm which was 3 to 4 hours sooner than normal. She told her father that she was going to take Jaclyn over to the bunk houses and show her where she would be sleeping and living. Garth thought that would be a good idea and he planned to take the men over as soon as they were done.

Chance and Danny sat around the fire pit with Bobby and Tom talking about the farm and its working. Tamara, Alice and Alisha had moved from the tables after they helped clean up, to the big fire pit and talked with the boys and men. Chance and Danny both knew who these girls were and what they were capable of. Bobby and Tom asked the girls how they had destroyed the androids and what had happened to the scientists. Alice took the lead and told all about the destruction of the scientists and how they had made the things go away. Tamara told about the destruction of the building and how it had plugged the tunnel up and then Alice spoke about the end of Manny and his two thugs. The others began to show up from the milking barn and the bunk houses and the big logs that had been made to sit on around the big pit filled up with the people. Elizabeth took Opal and Diana into the big house and they began to bring out pies and ice cream for everyone as they sat around and got to know each other better. It was finally decided that Garth would take Chance and drive the dual tank grain truck while Ammon and Carl with Danny Rodgers would take the milk tanker. Cassie would be driving the 1 ton pickup and take Jaclyn with her to the big feed store while Bobby Weingarten and Tom Greensboro would drive the bigger 3 ton flatbed to pick up building supplies and more feed for the cows. The rest of them would get the tractor’s running and work on the bunk houses. Finally everybody made there way to a place to sleep for the night and the moon was half full. The three girls entered the no-time and re-entered the garden at the haven and spent the night in their own quarters. They would be going back to the Farm to collect Danny Rodgers who had stayed with the folk.

Heinrick knew that Garth was going to bring his milk and whatever wheat grain he had been able to harvest down to the grange. It was the morning on the 9th of May and he was not going to let the man get the standard price for his grain. He was going to cut the price to less that a half of the standard price which would short the man a considerable amount and not be able to pay the loan off. He had alerted Buck and his deputies to be at the Grange so if Garth tried to start anything Buck was to arrest him and anyone with him. They were to put them all in jail and then they would drive out to the Womack farm and immediately begin eviction by physical force. The idea was to arrest Garth first which would make the 1 week notice null and void. The fine print clearly stated this although it was only on the second page of the letter that had not been sent with the first notice. If Garth accepted the price and did not put up a fight he would wait until they all left and then the sheriff would take his deputies and they would go to the farm and using the excuse that Garth failed to make the payment while he was at the grange, the default of the note would come into play. That was also on the second page of the notice that was not given to the Womack’s. This was Heinrick’s fail safe maneuver and a win, win for him and his minions. He would finally own the last big farm that was against him and the Womack’s would be run out of town. His boys and some of the hired help were to go to the farm and watch while the deal was being made in town and then tell him what was transpiring.

The girls had spent the night at the haven and returned to the Grange. They found the Banker called Heinrick in his big oversized office talking with the sheriff and telling him the plan. They remained invisible and when the sheriff left to wait for Garth and the others to show up at the grainer and the milk factory the girls took the second page of the notice and also gathered enough money to make the payment from Heinrick’s safe. Heinrick had told the Grange manager to cut the price of wheat to E$2.50 per bushel for Garth Womack and not a penny more. The standard price was E$7.50 per bushel usually but Heinrick did not want the man being able to pay the loan off which amounted to E$33.000 with interest at the moment. He figured the man would go mad and attack him which he planned to be there when the price was stated. Heinrick was pleased with himself as he poured himself a cup of coffee and added some whisky to it. This was his day and nothing could spoil it.

Alisha took the second sheet of the notice and the extra Emperor money to the farm while Tamara went to the sheriff and his deputies and removed the ammunition from their guns and any extra in the magazines on their gun belts. Alice showed up in the vault of the bank of Saint Francis and moved all the E money to another safe that was located in the peoples back that had been suppressed by the Limorish monopoly. She had to giggle about doing it. She was going to devastate the Limorish fortune. The only thing they had left in the safe at the Grange office was a few E dollars that amounted to about 20.00. She showed up at the Limorish house on the big YE farm and made the secret safe disappear. She had made all the E money disappear from the Limorish owned or controlled stores and institutions however she left the money on the surface so people wouldn’t get frightened all of a sudden. The Limorish boys and hired help had driven out early and found the secret little place where they could watch the Womack farm. They were to wait for their father and the sheriff to arrive and then back them up when the eviction began. Tamara found them hiding behind the small mounds in a grove of trees and removed the motors from their vehicles. Alisha had met with Chance, Cassie and Garth and showed them the second page of the notice and told them what was happening at the grange. She told Garth about the short on the price of the grains and handed him the wad of money she had taken from the grange safe. Garth was to give the money to Heinrick and pay off the loan and not cause any skirmish. They would then drive back to the farm and wait for the sheriff and the minions of Limorish as well as Heinrick himself to show up to try and evict them. They all knew that Heinrick could not do what he had planned. The downfall of the YE farm and the Limorish clan was going to happen this day and the City of Saint Francis was going to be liberated.

Garth pulled the dual tanker semi-tractor onto the big scales and waited for the man in the weight shack to give him the go ahead. He and Chance saw the sheriff’s car and his deputy’s vehicles parked by the exit gates from the big grain and milk yard. Carl, Ammon and Danny drove the milk truck in behind Garth and swerved around him to drive to the milk factory where they could unload the milk. Carl pulled the truck onto the big cement surface and all three of them hopped out and began to hook up the hose lines to the tank. The milk was paid by the gallon so the tank had to be drained and tallied. Garth had told them that the milk usually paid E1.50 a gallon. The tanker wasn’t a trailer but rather a 1000 gallon tank on the frame of a semi-truck. They had filled it this morning from the big coolers and it was at capacity. As they stood around waiting a small gang of workers from the grange walked over and asked who they were. Carl told them that they worked for Garth Womack. The men laughed at that and two of them walked over to unhook the milk lines from the tank. Ammon stepped in front of them and asked what they thought they were doing. The bigger man pushed Ammon aside and said he was going to unhook the lines and let the milk run out on the ground. “Stay out of my way, we got too much milk this morning and we can’t hold any more in the tanks so yours has to be dumped. Sorry about that, Womack boy. You got here too late. The Limorish farm filled us up this morning.”

Carl stood with Ammon and Danny and calmly told the man to stay away from the lines and that the milk was not going to be wasted. Butch Krieger turned and looked at Carl and waved for his minions to move forward. Danny spoke up and said “Why are you lying to us Mr. Krieger? There is ample space in the big tanks to take this milk.” Butch looked at the young man and spit a wad of tobacco juice at his feet. “I’ll tell you what boy, if I say we ain’t got any more space for your rotten milk then there isn’t any. Now ifin you boys want trouble we can sure give it to you.” “No Mr. Krieger, we aren’t looking for any trouble but you are not going to dump our milk out on the ground because there is more than enough space in the tanks in the factory. Shall we talk to the manager of the factory?” Butch was a bit slow on the uptake as was his low IQ nature. He was good at bullying others simply because of his size. He stood 6’4” and weighed in at around 280 lbs His hands looked like gorilla hands complete with the dark thick hair. The old saying for such a man in the early 20th century and even in the early 2000’s was “knuckle dragger” The little man that just told him what he wasn’t going to do was going to get his neck broke and Heinrick Limorish would sanction it. He spoke first before he made a move to grab the little man around the neck. “Why you little sh*t, I told you we ain’t taking your milk” He reached out and tried to grab Danny but found himself frozen in the movement. His mouth was open and he could not close it. He could hear and he could see what was in front of him but he could not speak. The other 4 men were also frozen in their movement to aid their boss.

Carl and Ammon both were stunned at what just transpired. They had no idea how it happened but both of them gathered that Danny did something to the big ape and his men. The big double doors to the milk factory were open and people had started to move out to the scene that they knew was going to be a bloody fight because they had seen it before. Butch was one of Heinrick’s favorite toadies and was always bullying folks. A good part of them that had walked out had witnessed what just happened but couldn’t figure it out. Carl finally spoke to Danny “What did you just do Danny. These men cannot move and it seems they can’t speak either?” Danny knew he had just exposed himself and his abilities that he had tried so hard to hide all his life. “I just stopped them from spoiling our milk Carl. They will be fine when I release them but for now we have to get all the milk off the truck and get paid.” The people that had come out and stood around all begin to laugh and finally turned and went back to work. Carl, Ammon and Danny could hear them snickering and laughing as they walked back into the factory.

Garth had been given the go from the weigh station master and pulled his truck off the scales and drove around the bank of large silos to reach the dump station. He and Chance did not see what was going on at the milk factory because it was two big warehouses to the East. Garth pulled the truck up on the platform where they could open the bottom hatches on the tanks and let the wheat empty into the conveyers. The conveyers carried the wheat up to the top of the many silos and dumped it in. On the way were the machines that counted the bushels and sorted the chaff from the wheat. This would usually take a good hour for the process to complete depending on the amount of Wheat and other grains that were harvested. The paymaster was inside a small building where the computer stations were located. Garth and Chance walked into the building and fetched some coffee while they waited for the emptying and counting. The smell of vanilla wafers was always strong in these places and it always made Chance smile. They both knew what was coming and Garth had the Loan payoff in a small bag that hung on his side. They would take the price that the paymaster would give and wait for Heinrick and his toads to confront them. Both knew not to engage Heinrick in his provocations but rather just pay him off. The biggest thing was going to be asking for a receipt and the conveyance of the note.

Heinrick had been notified when Garth and whoever he had hired to drive his milk truck showed up. He gave them time to get the trucks in position and then sent his Minion Top toad Butch to spoil the milk truck. He called the sheriff and told him to meet him over at the grain conveyers where they would confront Garth and his son. He expected Butch to take care of the hired help at the Milk factory so that was not on his mind at the moment. He waited and finally received the call from the paymaster at the grain silos telling him that Womack and his son were waiting for their truck to be emptied. “You really need to be here Mr. Limorish because Garth could hurt someone when I pay him the price you have stated.” “Don’t worry Ghomer, we are on are way, I think the sheriff will get there first so stay calm.” Ghomer Kristhoff hung up the phone and moved out to the cash register. The wheat had been unloaded and tallied. Ghomer had looked at the computer readout and it showed that 7,443 bushels had been gathered after the chaff was separated. He tallied the price using the figure that Heinrick gave him at E2.50 per bushel and counted the money up on the counter.

Sheriff Buchanan had driven up in his car and his deputies all parked their cars in a way that it would be hard for anyone leaving the paymaster office to get by without being confronted with a deputy. Heinrick had taken his little golf cart from the main office and driven over also. Buck and his men waited until Heinrick arrived and then he and one other deputy walked into the building with Heinrick. The price board hung on the wall behind the paymaster’s station and it was presently reading E7.50 per bushel. The 7,443 bushels at that price would amount to E55, 822.50 but the paymaster handed Garth E18, 607.50 and quickly stood back from the counter. Garth looked at him calmly and asked if this was right. Ghomer looked at him and then at Heinrick and the sheriff who had just walked in. “Yes Mr. Womack, our price today is E2.50 per bushel and the tally shows you had 7,443 bushels.” Garth looked at the price board and said “your price board clearly shows that a bushel is worth E7.50 so you want to explain the discrepancy to me?” Ghomer kept looking at Heinrick and finally said “the board is wrong and we can’t fix it yet. The price was dropped yesterday and this is what it is today. Garth had felt Heinrick walk through the door and he knew the sheriff was with him. Without turning around he said “Heinrick, how nice of you to show up today and right at the most convenient time that me and my son have brought our early harvest in.” He finally turned and looked Heinrick in the eyes. “So it would seem that the price of wheat has dropped considerable since last week, has there been a blight or something or is it that there is too much, what is it that drives the price down so far?”

Heinrick was stymied for a moment. He was expecting Garth to yell and act belligerent to him but the man was quit calm and made no move to show a violent tendency. Heinrick decided it was time to taunt the man to get the required reaction so the sheriff could arrest him. Chance was reading the man’s mind as well as the sheriff and his toad. Garth was doing the same and they could hear the pure want of arresting them or even shooting them. “Listen Garth, I dropped the price of wheat yesterday because your wheat is inferior to mine and we can’t do much with it so I figured it would only be worth E2.50 and you should feel fortunate that I didn’t go lower.” “Well then Heinrick, I guess you have done me a favor and I and my family appreciate that. Perhaps you can tell me how much I owe on that loan so I can pay you up. I mean since we are in town and you have conveniently shown up at the grainery. Chance was laughing inside himself as he could see these men becoming very agitated that their little plan was not working. Heinrick was flabbergasted that Garth was not raising his voice, or being angry about the shorting of price or even being mad at what he had just told him. When Garth asked him what the payoff of the loan amounted to he was even more confused. He knew the grain payoff would never be enough to pay the loan. His next maneuver was to state a higher price than what was actually owed, thinking that would get the proper reaction. The sheriff and his deputy had both un-strapped their weapons and had their hands resting on the pistol butts. Ghomer and the two secretaries that were in the front room were looking for a way out and had stood earlier and slowly moved toward the back room. They did not want to be in the line of gun fire when it happened. There were also about 5 other folks sitting around and they also had stood up and were looking for a way out.

Heinrick smiled his wicked little smirk and said “well this isn’t the proper place to be talking about that loan Garth but if you want to come down to the bank we can discuss how you and your family are going to have to move because you don’t have enough to pay that loan off now do you?” It was Garth’s turn to smile, which made Heinrick wince. “Well Heinrick, we would come down there but we have many chores to get down and now that you have my bad wheat and have given me a bottom dollar price and I do believe my men have delivered the milk by now, I see no reason that we can’t conduct that business here and now. After all this is a place of business that you do own and you can write up a receipt and a conveyance to me so we can get the deal over and done with. I will need that title back so why don’t you call up the bank and have them bring it down here and let’s get the deal done.” Every one had frozen to listen to this conversation between the two men. Most people in Saint Francis new the hatred between these two. “Okay Garth let’s see the money. Ghomer, Call Jack Richards down at the bank and tell him to bring the title to the Womack Farm as soon as he can, do it now.” Ghomer picked up the nearest phone and called the bank. The sheriff was frustrated and highly agitated by now. It seemed that the whole plan had just failed and this new tact was making his ulcer act up. Heinrick told him to get comfortable but be on the alert.

“Okay Womack, lets see if you got enough to pay the tab. He pulled out his black ledger that he carried around all the time and opened it up to the page of debt by the Womack’s. “Let’s see now, you barrowed 10,000 dollars last year and agreed to pay it back within a year of which I gave you one entire year to do at 50% interest quarterly so that would come to $30,000 plus a usage fee of $3000, oh and let’s not forget the additional $2500 to store the title which is still in your name, but not for long Womack because when you can’t pay the tab today you are going to sign it completely over to me. Oh one more thing I have the two page document you signed to relinquish that farm if you could not make the payment.’ So the way I see it is you owe me E$35,500 dollars. Do you have that kind of money today Garth or is this just a bluff?” Garth smiled again and asked Heinrick to write up the agreement and amount and make up the receipt. I will complete this transaction as soon as you write this all up and get that title down here. I would really like to get back to my farm so I can get the chores done.” “You gotta show me the money first Womack, I ain’t writing nothing until I see your greens. Garth looked at one of the secretaries and asked if there was any coffee. With that He and Chance walked over and sat down at the table that was close to the wall. Heinrick became belligerent at that point. “I SAID SHOW ME YOUR MONEY FARM BOY OR I AM GOING TO LET BUCK HERE TAKE YOU DOWN TO THE JAIL.” Garth looked at the hatred in the man’s eyes and could see he was going to explode any second. “Calm down Heinrick, you’re going to give yourself a heart attack. Come on over and have a sit and we can negotiate like two grown men. You could send your stooges out for now; there isn’t going to be any fighting or anything like that. We are just going to do some business. All the people were astounded by the calmness of Garth Womack and how their slave owner, as they referred to him, was talking very loud and seemed to be on the verge of violence. Heinrick turned to the sheriff and told him to wait outside but be ready. Buck was disgusted by now and told his deputy to follow him as they left.

Outside the paymasters facilities the sheriff deputies had been standing around and spitting. They all seemed to be chewing the only legal tobacco of the time. They came to attention quick enough when their boss walked out and went straight to his car. He opened the door and dug around for a few moments then tipped a flask to his mouth and gulped down the whisky from it. He shoved it into his side pocket and told everyone to gather around. Hymme, take Ralph and Earl and get out to the Womack farm. Just park close on the county road but don’t do anything. Leech, you take Bill and Mike and go get the others down at the YE. Get whoever you can and head out to the Womack place also. We are going to kick those people out today even if we do it without them doing anything to provoke it. Oh and get those damn Limorish kids on the alert to move in when the signal is given. We may have to burn some buildings down so get the gasoline and kerosene and bring the damn dynamite also. Now get going. Buck took another drink and offered it to Johnson Trebble his only deputy that stayed with him. They might get lucky and shoot the son of bitch Womack when he came out of the paymaster building.

Carl, Ammon and Danny had washed the tanker out after all the milk had been drained into the big vats inside the factory. They received the pay from the head man who laughed with them. The big gorilla Butch was still standing in the frozen position with the other 4 men. The washout had soaked them all and since Butch had been frozen with his mouth open there seemed to be a horde of flies gathering in it. Danny told the foreman that he would release the men when they were safely away from the City. The foreman thought that was okay and was going to warn the others to steer clear of the toadies. He figured they would immediately go to Heinrick wherever he might be. They climbed into the big rig and drove to the grainery where Garth was suppose to be. Carl drove the truck around the big warehouse and they all saw the sheriff cars parked in front of the paymaster station building for the grainery. Carl pulled the truck to a stop in front of the warehouse and they watched as the sheriff came out of the building and stood around with his deputies and then watched as 6 men climbed into three of the cars and drove toward the exit gates. As they continued to watch, another car drove up and one man climbed out and hurried into the building. Danny spoke up and said “Chance has told us to go to the farm and watch for the sheriff deputies that will be sitting along side the road and the Limorish boys and the hired help are hiding in the large grove of trees to the south. He says these people are preparing to try and evict us from the farm even though we are paying off the loan. So we need to prepare to protect ourselves. He is saying that Garth and he will be along soon and Heinrick and his minions will not be able to succeed with their plan.” Carl just stared at Danny for a few minutes and then finally found his voice. “How the hell do you know this Danny we ain’t talked with Garth or Chance since we drove in here this morning?” Ammon knew that Danny was talking in the mind to Chance. He had been told all about the telepathy of the children and he could even hear other people’s thoughts at times. He turned to Carl and said “listen Carl, Danny has a gift to talk telepathically and so does Chance. You know those three girls that brought us here have many gifts and I think there may be more people waking up to their own gifts these days so I think we should do as the boy has said and get our butts back out to the farm. There is a lot to do and we are now going to have to fight for our freedoms and a place to live because of the corruption in this town.” Carl shifted the gear box and the big rig rolled out toward the exit and left the Grainery.

Inside the paymaster office, Garth sat at the table and counted the money to give to Heinrick. Little did the man know that the money had come from his own safe? Jack Richards had shown up with the title and laid it on the table. He had also brought the conveyance papers and a receipt book. Heinrick was almost shaking as Garth counted out the money. He could not believe this man had saved up the money and how did he know it was going to cost this much anyway? He watched the farmer lay down the hundreds and had to ask, “Where in the hell did you get that money Garth. I know you couldn’t have saved it all in a year?” Garth just glanced at him as he continued counting. “What was the exact amount again did you say Heinrick?” “35,500 and you still haven’t answered my question; did you rob a bank or something?” Garth decided he would tell the truth so without breaking his count he said “no Heinrick I did not rob a bank, I took it from your private stash that you coerce from the poor people that live in this county. You know, the extra taxes imposed on the goods that people need to survive. The extra moneys you impose on the fuel and the way you cheat the small farmers out of their grains and sustenance. Oh and lets not forget the interest you charge to the people that have to use you bank to store any money they might have. Does that answer your question?” The people that were in the office, had to laugh until Heinrick looked around with his ugly sour face and that shut them up. They all knew that Garth was speaking the truth about Heinrick doing all those things to get their money but they didn’t know that he was truly telling where the money came from.

Garth finished counting the money and reached for his title. The title had never been signed over to Heinrick so it was just a free clear title. “Now how about the conveyance on the fraudulent piece of paper you have and I believe this one goes with it also.” Garth pulled the second sheet from his shirt pocket and opened it up. You see Heinrick you never showed this one to me and it is the most damning piece because you intended to steal my farm with it. I need the receipt and I need your signature here and here and this little business deal will be complete. Heinrick couldn’t do anything but take his money and sign the documents. He reached out with his big fat grubby paw and took the money first and started to stand up. Garth reached out his hand and the man sat back down without a word. “Please sign these documents before you rush out of here Heinrick, I know you have some pressing business elsewhere but so do I so let’s get this done shall we?” Heinrick could not control his hand as it moved to the pen and the paper. He was fighting so hard, his forehead was sweating. He wound up signing the documents and giving the receipt over to Garth. Garth picked up the two other documents and folded them nicely and stuffed them in his pocket. Heinrick wanted to stand up but he couldn’t and he could not speak either. He wanted to scream at the sheriff to come to his rescue but that was impossible for him at the moment. Everybody in the room watched as Garth stood and said to his son, “shall we go home?” Chance was smiling as he and his father walked to the front door. Garth gave a parting shot that no one understood. “Don’t forget your men over at the milk station and we’ll see you in awhile.” With that Garth and Chance stepped out onto the porch of the building.

Buck was taking another pull on the flask when Garth and Chance stepped out of the office. He almost choked on the whiskey. He and all his deputies stood still and stared at the two Womack’s as they walked down the steps and toward their big rig. Buck wanted to pull his weapon and shoot the man but he couldn’t seem to move. It was as if he was completely numb and his muscles would not obey his minds. The deputies all seemed to be the same way. Garth and Chance climbed into the big truck and Garth started it up. As he slowly drove by the sheriff and his deputies he called out to them and said “See you later boys” and drove out the exit gate a few minutes later. In the yard at the milk factory, 5 men fell down as they became unfrozen. Butch began to choke and spit wildly as the wad of flies left his mouth. He fell into a big puddle of grimy water and rolled out quickly. His minions had all fallen onto the muddy dirt surface and when they finally stood up they were covered with mud. Butch began to curse profusely and spit in-between his ranting language. “I am going to kill me some Womack boys.” He looked at his gang and said “get your butt’s washed off and let’s find Mr. Limorish; we got some killin to do.”

Inside the paymaster’s office of the grainery, Heinrick swung his arm outward and fell over in the chair he was sitting in. He landed on the floor backwards and rolled to the side. He stood up as fast as he could and looked around. He had seen Garth take all the paperwork and he had fought to keep from signing anything but he had no control. All the people in the office were standing around and staring at him. He could swear they were laughing at him so he yelled “WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU LOOKING AT, DON’T YOU PEOPLE HAVE WORK TO DO?” He spun around and walked toward the door. Richards the banker hurried after him and they both went out the door. On the porch, Heinrick watched the sheriff and his deputy’s fall down almost in tandem. It would have been funny to anybody but them. They all fell into their own spit of tobacco juice except Buck Buchanan who was crawling toward his flask of whiskey. Heinrick turned to Richards and handed the money to him and said “take this down to the bank and make sure no one takes any money out today.” He turned back to the sheriff and the deputies. “GET YOUR BUTTS UP AND LET’S GET OUT TO THE WOMACK’S DAMNIT. YOU LET THAT BASTARD GET AWAY.”

Cassie and Jaclyn had parked the truck close to the dock and went into the store and proceeded to buy the feed for the chickens and other small creatures that lived on the farm. They also picked up some clothes for Jaclyn and moved to the grocery area to buy some amenities for the bunk houses. They would have to do a bigger shopping excursion later but today was just a start. While they were walking through the isles of the grocery, three young boys from the YE farm began to follow them. Cassie could hear their thoughts and knew they meant to cause trouble. Jaclyn could hear them also and then they started making nasty remarks and sexual innuendo’s while they pulled things off the shelves. Cassie finally spoke to them without turning around and said “Why don’t you little children go and play in your pig sty?” Larry, Darrel and Marty Haverstock had been told to go and harass the Womack girl when she was spotted going into the feed and department store. All three of them lived on the YE farm with their families. Cassie had altercations with them before and especially when she went to the school. The boys were unruly and acted like bullies just like their parents. Today was no different. Larry was the oldest and he tried to get physical with Jaclyn first. He grabbed her arm from behind and spun her around. “Listen you little, uhhhhh” was all he got out of his filthy mouth as he doubled over and fell to his knees. Jaclyn’s survival instinct took over and she kicked the boy in the crotch as he spun her around. Cassie was turning at the same time and watched as Larry received his reward. Darrel and Marty backed up quickly and both of them laughed. Such brotherly love Cassie thought. Larry was down and breathing hard or hardly breathing while he held himself between his legs. He gasped his next words “stop laughing you two and get these girls out back, we are going to make them wish they never came here.” He looked up with tears in his eyes and tried to stand. Darrel and Marty started to move in when all three of them found themselves in the thick muck of the pig sty on the YE farm. The pigs were still grunting and wallowing in the sty and the pig poop and pee smell was ripe as the boys began to scream and wail while trying to drag themselves out of the pit. Cassie and Jaclyn finished their shopping and loaded the truck. They both were laughing as Cassie drove away from the store.

Bobby Weingarten and Tom Greensboro finished loading the lumber and extra materials and tools they had purchased from the big lumber and tool store and climbed in to go to the feed store to get the hay and feed for the cows. When they left the lumber yard two pickups with two or three people in the back pulled out and began to follow them. They noticed the occurrence and continued to the feed store. They pulled the truck up to a dock and lowered a tailgate onto the ramp surface. As they did this the two pickups pulled up to the front of them and blocked the truck. The men in the back jumped out and gathered in a group as two men from each cab jumped out and moved to the head of the group. One man stepped out and asked “What you two think you are doing? This ramp is for Limorish people only and your Womack truck does not have permission to park here.” Bobby spoke up and said “We don’t see any sign that says we can’t use this dock so why don’t you and your toads go back to where you can do some good, shall we say get your butts back to your slave masters farm?” The men started to spread out and move to make a ring around Bobby and Tom. Some of them jumped up on the dock and came at them from both sides.

Both Bobby and Tom had been trained in the special forces of the Army and knew how to fight hand to hand and with martial arts. The men that were closing in on them had no idea what they were doing. The Limorish slaves thought they would take the two men and beat them to death. The first one to attack wound up on the parking lot below with a bloody face and was out. The next one flew through the air and had a broken nose and screamed as he landed on the pavement and broke his hip. Two more pulled their knives out and charged. They wound up with broken arms and sliced sides as they landed on the dock. They were bleeding profusely and moaning. The men kept coming at Tom and Bobby but it was useless as they wound up being kicked backwards and put out of commission. The ones that stayed on the parking lot below tried to climb up but were kicked back down and the drivers decided to run away so they climbed back in the pickups and drove away from the docks. Bobby and tom rolled the ones that were incapacitated off the docks and listened to them cry and whine when they hit the pavement below. They both continued into the feed store and bought the hay and grain sacks that was on the list they had been given from Cassie. When it was all loaded they climbed aboard the truck and drove toward the farm.
