K, its been a decent discussion so far, but I'd like to add a comment WRT acidic/basic solutions.

To recognize a particular polarity is to indicate that that polarity has been shifted TO. It stands to reason then that to more gradually and permanently shift to a more conducive solution state, the application of MANY '5's AND '1's, as well as '2's, '3's, and '4's,... because there stands to reason that a semi-equal resistance is likely. Moreover, the objective is not simply to adjust the polarity but to see that it achieves stasis in the more conducive levels.
