It can be difficult to define ourselves
When we feel so small.
Do the grains of sand on life's shores
Bother with identity?
What is the point,
When life has ground us down,
Tossed us around,
When hope has flown?
At some time in life,
Everyone needs a mother.
After facing the night,
We all need safe harbor.
The frailty and failure of selfhood aside,
It's the strength of our mothers
By which we abide:
She is renewal, the true morning light!
She's the nest, and the sailcloth, the wind and the wide
Wide infinite world that accepts our definite lives.
Knowing and seeing us just as we are,
Mother earth sends her love to all of her stars.

Safe Harbor
Brotherhood falls asunder at the touch of fire!
He finds his fellow guilty of a skin
Not coloured like his own, and having power
To enforce the wrong, for such a worthy cause
Dooms and devotes him as his lawful prey.
~William Cowper
