"High Society, 1933"

Post by Edythe »

I've always had a connection with the late 20's and early 30's. It started when I was just a little girl. I watched all the old movies and felt that I had lived at that time. I've had dreams that I think are from a past life (mine or maybe even tuning in on someone else). I think I fell in love with Clark Gable when I was 5 :D .. When I wrote this poem, it was like I was experiencing this life again. Please listen to the youtube song while you read and let your mind drift back to a simpler time...I hope you enjoy.
"High Society, 1933"

He's a fascinating animal, so suave and debonair,
He looks like Clark Gable and dances like Astaire;
The ladies all adore him in his white tie and tails,
They all hope to have a chance with this fascinating male.

You'll find him out every night, martini glass in hand,
Jiving at the Savoy to the Benny Goodman Band;
'Jazz babies' dressed in ermine all give him the eye,
They parade past his table with long seductive sighs.

He sees a woman in the crowd dressed in diamonds and mink;
He calls a waiter to his table to order her a drink.
She is a stunning beauty, red lips and platinum hair,
Finger-waves and smoky eyes with an indifferent, sexy stare.

When her drink arrives, the waiter points to him,
With a sulty smile, she runs her finger 'round the rim;
The fascinating animal, now, leads her by the hand
Onto the crowded dance floor and the Benny Goodman Band.

Romance is in the air tonight, you can see it in their eyes;
Dancing cheek to cheek while the band plays a lullaby;
Another night, a different romance in "High Society",
How wonderful to be alive in 1933!

This is witty and fantastic. Oh my. The description of the lovely lady was great :) rofl!

(I got my hs English teacher and mostly myself in trouble over a similar poem )

It had all these lines about him standing too close when he's admiring the academic work etc. Haha eek. And a substitute teacher got it first and turned me in.

This was the teacher who wanted to tell me my prom date was gay bit couldn't and he also couldn't give sympathy S. Lol

I love your work!! Still floored by the Fairie of the willow

Hey Edythe, this election sure is a time warp, but has America had a time dirty enough to spawn Trump/Hillary lol

Not even the roaring 20s could have disgorged such horror upon the world.

It really is very much akin to the dark timeline from Back to the Future 2. Biff tower lol
