Virginity

What does the "Virgin Birth" signify?

In Hindu texts, Krishna is worshiped as virgin born even after his mother Devaki had five previous children. Christ was born to the Virgin Mary, while Buddha was born to the Virgin Maya. Egyptians worshiped Isis as the Virgin Goddess and Mother of Horus. In Greek mythology there was Myrrh the Virgin Mother of Adonis. Dionysus was worshiped as a “Twice Born” God. Mithra was as a Indo-Persian-Roman God whose birthday was celebrated around the winter solstice December 25 as he was Virgin born in a cave for an egg shaped stone. There are endless trail of miraculous events leading to the birth of each God, mystifying aspirants with a sense of awe and wonder even to this day. Edward Carpenter comes to the same conclusion in his book “Christian and Pagan Creeds” but has no explanation for the widespread dissemination of this particular motif. He had written:

“A Virgin-Mother was therefore a quite imaginable (not to say 'conceivable') thing; and indeed a very beautiful and fascinating thing, combining in one image the potent magic of two very wonderful words. It does not seem impossible that considerations of this kind led to the adoption of the doctrine or legend of the virgin-mother and the heavenly father among so many races and in so many localities--even without any contagion of tradition among them. Anyhow, and as a matter of fact, the world-wide dissemination of the legend is most remarkable."

Viewed from the perspective of the Kundalini thesis this motif symbolizes the Sublimation of Sexual energy and the birth of a new personality. Phrases such as “Reborn” “Born again”, “Twice Born” and “Resurrected” reflect the tremendous physical and mental expansion that may occur suddenly, sometimes within months or years leading to a mental expansion that completely alters the normal state of consciousness as if the old personality died and was “born again” or “resurrected” from the dead. This transformation of body and mind is the core foundation on which religions ,mythology and legends build their most profound ceremonies and literature.

There is a long historical precedent in the ancient religious practices which considered chastity and celibacy an indispensable practice for spiritual advancement. Even to this day, Catholic and Buddhists monks take a vow of celibacy. Different religious sects had understood the link between sublimation of sexual energies and spirituality but through the long march of history have lost its significance. While in Yogic and Taoist Philosophies this knowledge of the biological nature of recirculated sexual essences has never been lost and is taught openly. Western patriarchal religions regard sexual procreation as a legitimate avenue open to expression but Urdhva–Retas does not factor into their doctrines except in a subconscious manner. There are certain faiths such as the Catholic religion that still practices celibacy but without any link to higher consciousness.

The ancient philosophers believed that humanity was a reflection of the universe, alluded to by the maxim “As above so Below." Interpreted in this way The Goddess , Gods and Divine child become characters in the play of cosmic forces within oneself, a trinity of forces. The Virgin Goddess herself is a personification of Kundalini. She is the dormant Shakti, the feminine creative force which rises upward to meet the archetypal masculine God, who graces flow downward from the heavens starting with the crown chakra. Once the two opposites are purified, conjoined and married a Divine Child is born within oneself.

BUT ANAND PREM'S QUESTION is not basically about women: it is about her own mind. She is a clinging type, and that clinging is also because of the historical conditioning. The woman clings too much because she is afraid about insecurity, about safety, about finance, about this and that. She is so much afraid. She has been made afraid! That is the trick of the man, to make the woman afraid. When the woman is afraid she can be easily dominated. You cannot dominate somebody who is not afraid. So create fear!

First man creates fear in women about their virginity -- he creates great fear that virginity is something very valuable. Down the centuries he has created that fear, so every girl is afraid: if she loses her virginity, all is lost. Through that fear she cannot relate to people, she cannot make friendships, she cannot move in freedom. She cannot have a few experiences before she decides whom to choose. The fear... she has to be virgin.
Look at the distinction: they have not told the boys that "you have to be virgin" -- they say "boys are boys." And girls are not girls? Girls are girls too! Why are boys boys? Virginity is not asked from the boys. They are given freedom.

Through virginity, a great conditioning. And once a woman becomes too much afraid of losing her virginity -- think: up to the twentieth year of age, twenty years she has been protecting her virginity, twenty years of conditioning -- she will become frigid. Then she will never enjoy! Then she will never be able to flow in love; she will never have any orgasm. Down the centuries, millions of women have not had any orgasm they don't know what orgasm is. They simply suffer. They are simply means for the man. This a great degradation.

But if virginity is too important, and there is twenty years of conditioning that one has to be a virgin and always on guard, then it will be very difficult to drop that habit. How can you suddenly drop it after twenty years of conditioning? Just one day the honeymoon comes and you have to drop it -- how can you drop it? You can only pretend -- but deep down you think your husband a criminal, a beast, an ugly man, because he is doing something which you know is a sin. You never allowed any other man -- love is sin, and this man is doing that!

No wife is ever capable of forgiving the husband. In fact, in India particularly, no woman respects the husband, cannot. Shows all respect, but CANNOT respect -- deep down she hates the man because this is the man who is dragging her into sin. How can you respect the husband when he is the sinner? Without him you were a virgin; with him you have fallen. That's why the society teaches too much: Respect the husband! because the society knows, naturally the woman will not be able to respect him, so respect has to be forced... Respect the husband! Because if things go naturally, then she will HATE this man. This is the man who is preparing hell for her.

And out of this sin are born children -- how can you love your children? Born out of sin, you will hate them too, deep down in the unconscious. The very presence of the children will remind you again and again of the sin that you have committed!
The whole society has suffered because of this foolishness. Love is virtue, not sin. And to be capable of more love, is to be more virtuous. To be capable of enjoying love is a basic quality of a religious man -- these are my definitions.

Anand Prem is a great clinger -- and she thinks that whatsoever is true about her is true about all women? In a way she is right, because all other women have been conditioned in the same way. But it is not truth -- neither about other women nor about you, Anand Prem, it is not truth.
Become capable of being individuals, then you will have some taste of freedom. A woman is never thought of as an individual. When she is small, she is a daughter. When she is young, she is a wife. When she becomes a little older, she is a mother; still older, she is a grandmother -- but she is never herself. Sometimes a daughter, sometimes a wife, sometimes a mother, sometimes a grandmother -- but NEVER herself. Always in relation to somebody else!

Individuality is needed as a basic requirement. A woman is a woman! her being a daughter is secondary; her being a wife is secondary; her being a mother is secondary. A woman is a woman -- her womanhood is primary. And when women start becoming individuals, there will be a totally different world -- more beautiful, more joyous.

The release of the sacred seed into the woman during sexual intercourse establishes, through the first chakra, a connecting psychic astral tube which can be clearly seen on the astral plane. It is through this psychic tube that desires, feelings and even telepathic messages can be passed from one to another. This connecting tube is generally about six inches in diameter.

A man and woman touching in other ways--kissing, embracing--also establishes a temporary connecting link of astral matter which penetrates their auras and completely covers their forms. This is sometimes called the great magnetism, for it appears in the Second World as a psychic mass connecting the two of them as wide as the length of their bodies. This astral matter is created from the diverse expulsion of emotional energies, blending their auras together.

This psychic channel is magnetic enough to repeatedly pull them back together or cause emotional pain if they are separated. But unless the encounter is repeated, the astral matter will wear away in three or four days, a month at the most. In this way, touching or caressing someone of the opposite sex causes an abundant release of magnetic force to occur.

Now, because of promiscuity, masses of people are connected one to another in this way. A great bed of astral matter envelops them as they go from one to another. This causes the forces of intense fear to persist. From an inner perspective, their soul bodies are obscured by this astral matter and it is most difficult for those living in the Devaloka to contact anyone on the earth plane who is thus involved. Such individuals must fend for themselves without protection from the Devaloka or the Sivaloka, as do the animals who do not have benefit of the intellect to guide their actions.

It is the brahmachari's duty to be the channel of the three worlds. In this way he can help stabilize humanity through the Kali Yuga so that the forces of promiscuous desire do not blot out our culture, creativity and all connection with the Sivaloka. This is why the sadhana of brahmachariya is so extremely important for each unmarried Saivite to understand and observe.
REVIEW

1. The connections among the population appear as a great web on the astral plane.

2. The brahmachari's duty is to be a channel for spiritual energies.

Align Yourself With the Inner Worlds

As a brahmachari or brahmacharini you must endeavor to hold the force of the Sivaloka and the Devaloka in line with the higher forces of the Bhuloka, the earth plane. This happens naturally through the transmutation process and living a contemplative life. Regular personal sadhana and non-involvement in the emotional nature of others is the practice to be observed.

A great aid to the accomplishment of this is to invoke Lord Siva daily. Then the higher chakras open within your psychic body. Peace of mind comes unbidden and bliss flows forth from your aura for all to feel.

Regular puja invoking the assistance of Lord Muruga will also greatly aid in a premature banishing of connections with the external world and in severing the tubular connections with inhabitants in it. When Lord Muruga is reached through your puja, He will also give wisdom and the divine understanding of the transmutation process.
THE ORIGINAL 'STATE OF BRAHM'

Each person is born in a full state of brahmachariya. Upon reaching puberty, those boys and girls who remain virgins maintain the inherent state of brahmachariya. They are are able to ward off, and may not even notice, many emotional and sexual temptations that would be troublesome to the non-virgin. This is because the psychic shield surrounding the virgin's aura has never been penetrated.

They are the ones "who walk in the rain without getting wet, sit long in the sun without getting burned." They are the ones for whom reading about worldly experiences nurtures only their curiosity, whereas had they established psychic tubular connections with a member of the opposite sex, the reading would nurture a much deeper sexual desire. It is the virgins performing brahmachariya sadhana since puberty who can, if they persist, live in "Brahm," or God, consciousness most of the time, even without performing intense sadhanas. This is because they have never consciously entered into world consciousness. Instead they look out into it as if through a veil.

The Agapetae

Agape is Greek and defined as spiritual, selfless or universal love - in contrast to Eros being romantic or sexual love. Agapetae may be translated as the beloveds or holy virgins and described as holy virgins who personify and radiate universal love.

A further definition that needs to be cleared up is the term “virgin”. As I understand it, in biblical times a virgin simply was an unmarried young woman who was not a widow or a prostitute. Physical virginity was not the issue, although it may have been assumed. Early Christian texts often were in Greek, and there the word ‘parthenos’ was used which meant virgin but also maiden or young woman.

There is very little known about the spiritual sexual practices of these Christian males (agapeti) with their holy virgins (agapetae) because most of the writings that survived were polemics against this practice. It seems to have been widespread for several centuries until it was outlawed by the synod of Elvira (305 CE) and the Council of Nicea in 325 CE, and replaced with asceticism and monasticism, except for the clergy who could live with their subintroductae or housekeepers. This was the beginning of the suppression of sexuality in Christian societies, the consequences of which are still with us at present.

However, the practice seems to have survived in some form for several centuries longer. When looking for AGAPETI and AGAPETAE I found the following entry in the Dictionary of Religion & Ethics: “Monks and nuns of the early Middle Ages, who, while professing celibacy, dwelt together in what they called holy love. The practice was suppressed by the Lateran Council, 1139.”

The Cathars with their strong links to the Gnostics also encouraged chastity and avoidance of procreative sex. They became prominent in Southern France and neighboring countries from about 1000 CE to the middle of the 13th century when they were massacred by the papal army. Afterwards the Inquisition was established to eliminate any survivors and their teachings. There are also suggestions that the Cathars have been the protectors of the Holy Grail of Christian mythology. From the 15th century the gnostic tradition of sacred sexuality was cautiously carried on by the Rosicrucians who celebrated a mystical marriage, and later by the Alchemists in their search for the elexir of life.

Marnia Robinson in Spiritual Brides of Early Christianity and Andrew Moore at http://members.ozemail.com.au/~moorea/agapetae.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; give many referenced examples of the polemic against the agapetae custom, which I do not want to repeat here but give just a few general descriptions.

"Our fathers," Chrysostom begins, "only knew two forms of sexual intimacy, marriage and fornication. Now a third form has appeared: men introduce young girls into their houses and keep them there permanently, respecting their virginity." And later he continues: “The virgin is free from these burdens (of a married woman). She retains her vigor and her youthfulness, and even at the age of forty may rival the young nubile girl (= teenager).” He also described all the loving care that these virginal sweethearts received even in public.

Desert ascetic St. Jerome wrote: “I blush to speak of it, it is so shocking; yet though sad, it is true. How comes this plague of the agapetae to be in the church? Whence come these unwedded wives, these novel concubines, these harlots, so I will call them, though they cling to a single partner? One house holds them and one chamber. They often occupy the same bed…”

Even St. Paul alludes to the agapetae in his first letter to the Corinthians:

7:36 - But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin, if she pass the flower of her age, and need so require, let him do what he will, he sinneth not: let them marry. 37 Nevertheless he that standeth steadfast in his heart, having no necessity, but hath power over his own will, and hath so decreed in his heart that he will keep his virgin, doeth well. 38 So that he who marries his virgin does well, and he who refrains from marriage does better.

Here Paul clearly states that it was accepted practice for a Christian man to live with his virgin. If she got on in years and now wanted a conventional family or if she became pregnant, it was not a sin, and it was fine to marry. However, his preferred way was for them not to marry but just live together as a holy couple.

While Paul states in the first Corinthian that he is single, he seems to have acquired his own virgin some time later. The ACTS OF PAUL AND THECLA is a second Century apocryphal of St. Paul and his virgin Thecla. After hearing Paul preach in her home town on chastity, Thecla broke off her engagement which caused much trouble for herself and Paul. This text became very popular and was translated from the original Greek into a number of languages by the early church, and St. Thecla became the most famous of virgin martyrs.

Another reference to the agapetae may be a saying of Jesus according to the New Testament in Luke 23:29: “Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed.” A similar saying is in 79) of the Gospel of Thomas. Here Jesus seems to say that remaining a virgin or practicing undefiled sex is preferable to reproductive sex.

Cristian, a beautiful addition to your thread about gay energy, I'm relieved reading some of your thread here as it explains so much of the hell people go thru at home... Lol

There's 600 years of documented wrongful sexual congress by Catholic priests. It's a running joke but the Catholic church would still rather ignore the natural urges of the male priests. This proves that the idea of enforced celibacy is more destructive than constructive, just ask any abused alter boy.

That brings up the conclusion that sex is a natural thing and religious dogma corrupts natural human proclivities by using myth and belief as tools for confusion and separation. Sex is the ultimate union between male and female, it doesn't get any more intimate or powerful. Dogmatic belief based on historical religious constructs is exactly what needs to be laid aside if we're going to discover something new.

If you take only the catholic church/priests as an example of celibacy You are short changing your self.
There are examples of very happy people that have been celibate their whole lifes and actually transmuted the energies..
Ajaan Cha comes to mind.

The big difference seems to be guilt and secrecy.
The orientals understand that in order to reject something you must first understand (accept) it.

They turn their backs on sex hopefully out of the fullness of knowledge, zero guilt, and lack of fear.

Another key element is communal living rather than the "nuclear family unit" of the west.

Isolation breeds guilt and fear due to the absence of enlightenment (IMO), at least the type of isolation I'm familiar with.

You dont want to be alone with a tyrant too long and that's yet another aspect of western religion I despise. No guru yet monogamy of congregation toward its ministers with no dissent.

Nope it is not.
I was going to agree with you, but even though celibacy is celebrated by the catholic clergy. It is not very well understood by them or practised. Making the vow into a farce and take it to place where it has no value whatsoever.
That's the corruption of the priesthood. Not its sacredness..

There is a difference between taking the vow of celibacy en virginity.
Or just giving lip service to such a vow.
