What She Doesn't Know

What she doesn't know can't hurt, they say
I wonder if she's ever felt this way
Knowing what I'm losing, I'd leave a lot behind
I'd trade it altogether for one more hour of his time
A stately gentleman who fakes a rougher edge
To hide among the lesser mortals whom he's pledged
A measure of his loyalty they never can repay
The night comes down so hard on my dream of one more day
The expression in his eyes, it wasn't fear
It was sadness, some exhaustion, and something not as clear
The look upon his face left little choice
The only doubt remaining was the softness in his voice
I got out of that car and took his hand
The tender way he touched me helped me understand
Although the world was shaking us so hard
If it was a kinder world, I'd climb back in the car
What she doesn't know can't hurt, they say
Saying it twice doesn't take the hurt away
I envision them tonight in separate chairs
I think back to that car ride and wonder if she cares
Does she know that I'd sit on the edge of mine
Waiting for a hero and a minute of his time
Some lonesome night, soon I hope, if memory is fair
I'll close my eyes and his presence will be there.
I'm not quite ready to admit that love struck at first sight
But if i had my way I'd be loving him tonight.
What she doesn't know can't hurt her much, they say
I don't know of a much more painful way.
