You Looked So Deeply

Looking across that desk was like looking across
The widest river I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot.
Your eyes bridged that distance, like the sun warming the ocean. The vastness was irrelevant to you.

I thought everything was clear and in its place.
I thought I was in control. But with one look, you stirred my soul and I was helpless against you.

Swept into the current of love, blind and weak, pummeled senseless by its brutal intensity. I was drowning in furious waters, fueled by winter's depth and hurried by the spring!


And I am not sure what was worse, that you stirred the waters or that I fell for the same old trick, but if I could do it over, I would be looking at your eyes and not at the disaster ahead of me.

Self denial.
It is like damming a river poorly,
Then standing beneath that dam
And waiting for it to crush you.



You were so close today.
I wanted to look at you so badly.
Like a fool dancing below a dam
Close to bursting,
I ignored you.

I wonder now what will happen to the fool.
Will he die of thirst, that finally puts an end to the dance?
Or will he be crushed by sudden and unexpected love?



Something tells me that whatever happens,
It might happen soon.
I will dance in the shadow of my own blindness,
Playing the fool, loving you desperately,
From a distance.

And someday something will grow here,
In this barren place. Washed anew by the flood,
It will become verdant and green,
And though i am gone these things will proclaim
The height and depth of my passion for you.



Someday when you walk through the barrens of the heart,
You will see signs of life.
No doubt mine will have long fled into the night.
But the love will be there for you to see,
Forever.
